when i was home for xmas break i bought a small case of mangoes (just 6)...they were pretty good, so i bought another pack...that's when i noticed that on the side of the box it read "hot water treated"! i was pretty disappointed...and got to wondering what other fruit might be irradiated or otherwise "treated" and thus no longer living? i had heard before that pineapples from hawaii are irradiated? anyone know of other fruits? thanks!

"hot water treated" does not mean dead. It takes so many minutes in boiling water for the enzymes to start breaking down, and it goes from the outside in. So if they are just dipped in hot water for a few seconds to kill germs, bacteria, parasites, whatever, I wouldn't worry about it. Irradiated stuff, on the other hand, I would stay away from.

I have eaten both hot water treated mangos and fresh, raw mangos just off the tree, and the taste/texture is the same. So I don't think the enzymes are killed in hot water treated mango. Just smear some of that mango on your face, and you will feel a tingly/burning sensation as the enzymes of the mango dissolve dead skin cells.
