I've seen several suggestions on this board about reading "The China Study". Is this the one? I'm thinking about going to this presentation. Do you think it would be worth the time, effort, and expense?

I find it interesting that they will be serving a "continental "breakfast-isn't that sweet rolls and coffee?

Alright! I'm signing up to attend. I'll get back to you on what they serve for breakfast. The University has a vegetarian cafeteria down the hall from the chapel. (It used to be a Catholic Seminary.) I've been to several meetings there with lunch provided by the cafeteria. They didn't serve coffee, but there was tea and baked goods. I'll bring my own fruit and herb tea, just in case.

I DO feel fortunate to live near enough to attend special events and lectures presented by Bastyr. Next week I am going to a lecture by Cherie Calbom, "The Juice Lady". Her latest book is "Juicing, Fasting, and Detoxing for Life". I'm looking forward to that.

I adore this book. After reading it, I've bought 4 copies to give out to friends and family and every single person enjoyed it. It's a very well-written and easy to read study on how what we eat affects our health, which I would imagine any raw fooder is interested in.
Great book! A definite must read!!

I'd sure be going if I wasn't working that day. Please do let us know what you think of it! I'd love to attend so many of the functions they offer there, thankfully I am only a ferry ride away but it is still hard to make the time to get over there.

Enjoy!!

Please go, even if it's only for the sake of the rest of us that can't go! :) The China Study is an awesome book.

I envy you. PLUS you get to go see Cherie Calbom. I just bought a couple of her books for myself as Christmas presents. They've proven to be a wonderful resource.

If you do go to these presentations, would you be willing to share your experience with us?

Zaphirah, What does OT mean? When it comes to cyber-shorthand I'm behind the times. I just recently learned what LOL means! (LOL!)

My signature line comes from "The Sunfood Diet Success System" by David Wolfe. It's in my favorite chapter, "Persistence".

Hi Rawknitster ~ We live down in the Tri-Cities, but I'd be interested to get on their emailing list for upcoming events. Is that how you found out about it?

Can you give me any info if there's a way to sign up? Thanks in advance. *Ü*

Yes, I am on their email list. Tomorrow I'm going to the final luncheon meeting in a series called "Insider Briefings with Graham Kerr". The event coordinater, Ashley, will be there. I'll ask her about it. I'm sure she will say to email her and she'll put you on the list.

:o Not trying to be oppositional here (and I didn't read all the replies) but the China Study is a severely flawed study. There are too many flaws in design and conclusions for me to write them all out but I'll mention the most major one. The entire study is based on Casein, a milk protein, most likely pasteurized. There are many different types of proteins in animal protein and to conclude that ALL animal protein is disease causing based on studying ONE of them, is simply really bad science.

There's a whole list of flaws and conclusions in there that are way too far from what the study actually investigated - I'd post a link to a review but it's not a vegan friendly site, so if you're interested, you may want to google it.

Thanks, souldanzer. It's always good to get another opinion. Most studies are flawed in some way, sometimes it changes the conclusion, sometimes not. I will keep that in mind, but I'm not interested in any information posted on a non-vegan friendly site.

He is usually very popular when he comes to speak at the Toronto Veg Food Fair.

Interesting story: My husband who is vegan and current president of TVA works with a guy who read the book on a airplane flight...when he got off the plane - he decide to go VEGAN!! Seriously! He wasn't even vegetarian before.
That's how powerful the book was to him. He also asked my husband a lot about what to eat, where to shop etc.

When he told his family and his girlfriend about his decision - it was like he was coming out of the closet...:)

When I use The China Study during discussions on how detrimental to health milk is, the detractors claim that The China Study does not apply to raw milk (not that these people even use it raw).

That disgusting organization The Western A. Price Foundation tried to refute the study, and book, by using this raw milk defence. T. Colin Campbell, in response, merely pointed out that The Western A. Price Foundation people, those who criticized his work, are not nutritionists but creative writers with degrees and qualifications in such a subject as English, not the sciences.

Raw or pasteurised, milk is still a deadly toxic substance, but how best can I respond to people who claim that The China Study does not apply to raw milk?

T. Colin Campbell addresses the WAP Foundation in this short video, but does not address the raw milk question:

Totally OT, heh, but I used to live in the PNW myself.
I was talking about Bothell in particular when mentioning Death Cab for Cutie and Sanjaya.
And I was at the forefront of all that Sup Pop stuff back in 1988, too, when I was an indie record store girl. And yeah, I hella miss those days.

Anyway, have fun, y'all. I wish I could be there. :)

I was just reading Heavier than Heaven, and I did not move here until 92..I missed alot of that stuff, tho I got here just in time to see quite a bit of great stuff.

I had a chance to buy Nirvana tickets, did not jump on it, and Kurt was dead a few months later. /sigh

Thank you SO MUCH for posting about your experience going to listen to Cherie Calbom. It sounds as though you found it worthwhile.

I find that, although it's lovely to read books, it's even MORE wonderful to hear the author live and in person. It just seems to add a whole new dimension to the information that's being offered. I'm glad that you were able to go.

Thank you once again. It really means a lot to me that you took the time to share your experience with us! :)

So, who funded and organized this study in a county rife with human rights violations?

I wouldn't be so quick to refer to The Weston Price Foundation as disgusting. Although I may not agree with all the approaches, there's alot of valid information there as well.

Stina, I would suggest you read the book before you criticize it or the author.
And before talking about another country's human rights violations, think just for a moment about the more than 100,000 innocent Iraqi CIVILIANS who have lost their lives thanks to the lies of our own government.

Dear Emma-

I carefully reread my post. I don't see how anything I said could be construed to be a criticism of the book. I truly feel for people living in a communist country. That's an entirely different subject then the war America is waging. I haven't had an opportunity to read the book yet due to time restraints. I will. It's a legitimate question to look at who funds studies. I hope you have a nice day!:)

The lecture by T. Colin Campbell was very interesting. It seemed the people attending were already familiar with his book, or at least with a vegetarian diet. It was a lean and healthy looking group.

The university’s vegetarian cafeteria laid out an impressive breakfast. It was in no way “continental”. There was fresh fruit on the table along with vegetarian baked goods, and some type of breakfast burrito. I was going to have some fruit, but I opted to skip the line, got some tea and took a seat in the chapel. The university used to be a Catholic Seminary. The chapel seemed to have been left mostly intact. It was a lovely place.

Dr. Campbell talked about his background and some of the events that lead him to writing “The China Study - Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-Term Health” He talked about the studies on rats that lead him to believe animal proteins are a huge risk factor to our health. The short version as I understood it: Plant food keeps us healthy, animal proteins cause disease. The more animal protein you eat, the bigger the risk. I was shocked at the list of diseases he listed as consequences. Everything from cancer to heart disease, diabetes, MS, etc. It was a long list. You can see some of the list in the picture posted below.

One part I found very interesting was his referring to the study released in 1986 that associated a high fat diet with breast cancer. It is his assertion that this lead to the low-fat craze which has not been a good thing. He said the high saturated fat was from animal protein which is the real cause of the problem.

He talked a bit about Vitamin D and how animal protein interferes with the body’s ability to make/utilize it. His contention was that we may be able to get enough Vitamin D from the sun even in a northern climate, that deficiencies may be caused by people in northern climates tending to eat more animal protein. If we don’t get enough sunshine it would be practical to take a supplement.

After almost 90 minutes Dr Campbell took a few questions from the audience. Tom from Raw Vegan Source was there, he asked if raw cow’s milk was any better than pastuerized. The Doctor said no, as it is still an animal protein. Another question was about a raw food diet. The Doctor’s response was that if a vegan diet is a good thing, a raw vegan diet is probably better. Less cooking is an advantage, not sure if 100% is necessary, and that there have been some problems associated with it. Maybe it was just me, but I felt a tension in the room, and I think the Doctor did, too. At that point he introduced a member of the audience and Bastyr graduate, Vesanto Melina. She is a consultant/author of nine raw food books. Including Raw Revolution Diet. She stood up to a round of applause.

Dr. Campbell’s most passionate talk was when asked how to get this information into the healthcare system. The healthcare system has ignored it. All the talk about Universal Health Care is trivial. Gene studies, while interesting, are a waste of time. What does a gene profile matter if a plant based diet can keep errant genes under control? Nothing but opportunity for the drug industry.

I bought the book for $13 and stood in a long line to get it signed by the good Doctor. While I was in line there were plenty of interesting conversations going on around me, by far more intelligent people than me. I listened to them without adding my 2 cents. Vesanto Melina was in the group directly behind me. After we got our books signed I talked with her and her friend for a few minutes and we took some pictures.

I had brought 2 boxes of Cheesy Nacho Kale Chips just in case I connected with EmmaT or Segge. No luck there. I gave a box of the chips to Ashley, the event coordinator and the 2nd box to Vesanto. She asked for the recipe which I emailed her along with a beautiful picture of her and her friend. My picture with her didn’t turn out so good, (they rarely do), but I’ll post it anyway.

I’ve attempted to describe this event to the best of my recollection. Emma, Segge, and anyone else that was there, please feel free to correct me or add further details. Now, I’ve got some reading to do.

RK, I'm glad you posted. I gave up on attending, once I figured out that I would have to leave my house at 4 in the morning to make it there, and take my dog along. I would have liked to meet the man. I would have asked the raw milk question, so thanks for writing about it and his reply. I'll stick to vegan and mostly raw. So far it's worked for me and my sister (both of us cancer survivors). Maybe we'll meet elsewhere some day. We can swap knitting stories. I've knitted 6 sweaters, 3 hats, and 4 pairs of socks since the beginning of the year, and have started another pair this evening.

RawKnitster! Thanks so much for sharing. This book is THE reason my mom says she will never touch meat again. Her female relatives get breast cancer and blame it on genes. She's taking a different route from the blame game and hands over her eyes and ears. I'm a lucky daughter.

This is good inspiration to reread the book! :)
