View Full Version : The Juicer Thread - Here's All The Threads Covering All The Juicers

Hi everyone
It seems every other day there's another "Which is the best Juicer?" thread.
So I thought I'd pull them all together to make it easier
rather than just starting a lot more new threads. ;)
There's already a Goldmine of information here on juicers of all kinds.
Many people have poured out their hearts with
very valuable information and experiences.
These threads were carefully checked to make sure
they were only about juicers,
not about juicing, or other topics
not directly related to the
juicers themselves.
I did include just a few threads referring to juicers folks had already purchased,
with questions & issues that might concern a new buyer.
This did take a lot of work, but it was done with the idea
of helping others who didn't want to do all the digging.
This is understandable.
Here it is.
Enjoy! :)

A Juicer Glossary
Here's just a few basic terms you'll need to know to help you select the best juicer or your needs.
Types of Juicers
Centrifugal Juicers
Centrifugal Juicers are probably the most common. These juicers grind the fruit and vegetables by pushing them against a shredder at a very high speed. The shredder disk/grater, which revolves at about 3600 RPM or faster and is usually very loud. Some people say the heat generated destroys a large percentage of the nutrients and enzymes. Their main drawback is that they inject oxygen into the juice, causing oxidation which degrades the juice quickly. But they do produce the juice quickly.
Masticating Juicers
A little slower than centrifugal juicers but still quite fast. These types of juicers chew the pulp and then push it through a sieve (or sleeve).. Masticating chews pulp to further break down the cell-wall structure.
Slow Turning/Gear/Auger Juicers
These machines turn at a lot slower speed and are generally considered far superior when it comes to retaining as many nutrients and enzymes as possible in your juice. They can be slower to juice but can do basically everything that a centrifugal and masticating juicer can do and more, such as extracting juice from wheatgrass more effectively.
Single Auger
The single auger masticating juicer uses a profiled screw style molding to compact and crush fruit and vegetable matter against a static screen allowing juice to flow through the screen while pulp is expelled through a separate outlet.
Twin Gear
Twin gear machines are usually the most expensive juicers offering the best juice yield. Twin gear juicers employ two metal counter rotating gears to crush the juicing fodder. The precise tolerance of the gears allows the juice to flow through the gap between the gears while the large pulpy matter passes along the top of the gears and is discharged.
Triturate or Triturating Juicers
Twin Gear Juicers may also be correctly termed Triturate Juicers. "Triturate" is defined as "To rub, crush, grind, or pound into fine particles or a powder; pulverize." A triturate juicer does not rub, crush, or grind fruits and vegetables into a fine powder, but they do crush and grind produce to produce juice. These low-speed, precision engineered machines do not produce significant heat, do not promote oxidation and do not disrupt the cellular structure of the fruits and vegetables. The low speed also eliminates oxidation to the juices, therefore, preserving the precious enzymes and nutrients that are such a beneficial part of our diet.
The Heavyweights
Everyone and their dog has a juicer out there, but only a handful are really popular. Here's just a few for openers.
Weight and horsepower are not everything. For instance, the most reliable VCRs ever built were consistently made by Matsushita of Japan.. (Panasonic, Quasar, Magnavox..) The Consumer Reports repair index bore this out for many years. But these VCRs weren't always the heaviest.
(Consumer Reports doesn't rate juicers).
But, generally speaking, heavier products have been known for their metal parts instead of plastic, better alloys, superior parts integrity.
It would be hard to find a "bad" juicer out there. It's possible. But they are generally well made, relevant to their price range. More than anything else, it comes down to what kind of investment you want to make. If you want a get-me-by juicer, go cheap. If you want long lasting durability, check out some of the ratings that are available.
Here's some heavyweight contenders, for those who take sheer power seriously. I do. We can't realistically expect the same performance out of a 4 cylinder engine as we would a 460 V8. Not the best example, I know, cuz these things are such gas guzzlers. But it makes the point. Given the same load conditions or test criteria, no one would expect them to perform the same.
When it comes to juicers, and course, heavy foodstuffs, the more powerful machines are bound to last longer.
But, on the other hand, some folks don't use their juicer that much, drive it as hard, or will be ramming down tons of hefty carrots, stringy vegetables and other demanding things on a regular basis. Maybe their use is lightweight, and a lighter juicer would be just fine.
There are other factors too, like twin gear and so forth, much like downshifting your vehicle when going up steep hills. If you don't, you "lug" your engine, which will result in eventual damage. More on that later.
Attachments/accessories are important to some as well. These are very nice too, but I wouldn't make gadgetry my first consideration.
Here's a couple of Hulk class juicers, beginning with the top dogs:
1) The augie doggies - the "auger" type juicers
2) The "masticating" type. These are listed alphabetically.
Champion International - 26 lb - 1/3 HP motor
Green Star Gold/Power Juicer GP-E1503 - 26 lb - 1/4 HP
http://michaelmay.us/07blog/images/1214_fridayfight5.jpg
Here's a couple of middleweights - still very good juicers:
Omega 8005 - 15 lb - 1/3 HP
Samson KPE-1304 13 lb 7 oz - 1/4 HP
Here's a couple of weighty CENTRIFUGAL models:
http://bluegrassplaygrounds.com/images/merry-go-round.jpg http://pro.corbis.com/images/RF4467456.jpg?size=572&uid=%7B42C26799-A073-4339-9055-9A90BDA1CA23%7D
Whoa!! We be juiced!!!juiced!!! Whoa!! We be juiced!!!
Breville Juice Fountain Elite 800JEXL - 21 lb - 1.33 HP (!)
Note: The 1.33 hp spec is not the actual motor. This is accomplished by mechanical advantage - an output ratio based on a lower gear. Breville obscures the actual motor size here. (Couldn't find it anywhere on the net). But this is still one Monster of a Juicer, and I'd LOVE to have one.
Omega 9000 - 13 lb - 1/3 HP

The Next Heavyweight Household Juicer (Twin Screw Press)
http://www.oelib.com/mtio/bg1.gif "It's Clobbering Time!"
The THING: Weighing in at 26 lbs, with a 1/4 HP motor
Green Star Gold Juice Extractor
(Formerly called "Green Power")
GP-E1503

This Twin Speed bad boy is more versatile, unlike The Hulk who uses sheer, brute force for everything he does. The GP-E1503 offers a lower RPM (speed) for better extraction. This model is also designed for juicing wheatgrass. It's 1/4 HP motor is not as strong as Hulk's 1/3 HP. And specs like "4hp equivalent w/gear reduction" is simply in reference to a lower gear, which offers greater output as a form of mechanical advantage.

Wow, thank you sooooo much EternityRider, this will be of great help to many!
I thought I would add to the wealth of information you have so generously provided. This summer I had wanted to do Angela Stokes Juice Feast and thus went on a mission to wade through the sea of CONFLICTING juicer info. I am not a complete novice as I have been juicing for three years with my full size Breville, I bought when first starting out.
I read and viewed everything out there and came to the conclusion that a conclusion is far from straight forward. So I decided to do what I do with most of my decisions and use my head – it’s not like I have a lab where I can test all the theory’s and claims bouncing around!
I was THIS CLOSE to buying a very expensive second hand Greenstar Gold juicer on craigslist when I came across the youtube videos below. It was as if someone turned on a light in a dark room! . . . . . .JUICING IN A BLENDER
How simple! How easy! How quick! How inexpensive! Ok, so I already have a Vita Mix and the mesh straining bags and the veg. All I had to do to test this theory was to give it a go! . . . . . . . . . . OMG!!!
This process made the single best juice I have ever had and I’ve been juicing for years too. I have had juice out of just about every machine bar the Norwalk press. What was so great you may ask?
So what I do to make juice in a blender is:
1. fill container with veg plus about a 1/4c. water if needed. Blend minimal time but thoroughly. You want an apple sauce consistancy.
2. Strain out pulp with mesh bag over glas bowl - preferably with pouring lip. Drink up or store. Yum!
Now sometime I actually like to go one step further - not for fasting obviously - I put the juice back into the blending jug add more greens and blend again. Do not strain. Drink up!
It was:
super fast
super quick easy clean-up
the smoooothest creamy juice ever
The juice it’s self was off the scale wonderful so very different in taste and texture. It tasted more whole as if I was drinking much more of the plant than I get from conventional machines it also seemed to have much less acidic taste or bite just smoooothness.
I’m sure many will want to reply why this process is not a good way to juice your produce but this way works best for me, It feels right. I love it and strongly encourage you to give it a try it; it’s not going to cost you anything!
Please have a look at the juicing in a blender links below:
AMENDMENT 8/2009: It has come to my attention that some of the link below are no longer active. Please just type in "Juicing in a blender" on youtube and you will get loads of examples! Cheers, EPPP :-)

I have a 2hp VM and with a tamper I get the same results as his 3hp. I also do like to ad about 1/8-1/4c. water which make a HUGE difference.

EPPP - Thank you sooo much for sharing your what you did.
I am a HUGE fan of exploring inexpensive ways to these things.. especially for the sake of folks of modest means. Blending wheatgrass is a viable alternative to expensive juicers, or relatively inexpensive manual juicers (which still run around $60 for anything well-constructed, unless you go used).
Also, I am not one to major on minors as far as spending 500% more for a 5% better juice. The main burden of this thread is twofold:
1) To make the process of deciding easier for others.
2) To determine which juicers are the most durable, in spite of some misleading motor specs and getting dazzled by gadgetry. In a word - what are basically the best investments in juicers, in terms of substance.. in hardware quality?
This leads to a very important question. When you say "juicing by blending", are you talking about blending it, then basically just drinking it?
I didn't see anything in what you shared about separating the juice from the pulp.
If you are referring simply to blended drinks, these would be smoothies.
In fairness to you, these might, in the looser sense of "juice", be thought of as pulpy juice. That's okay, and I LOVVVVVE smoothies. :p
But the terms must be distinguished for a very major reason, due to application.
Technically speaking, "juice" is what is extracted from the pulp.
This is similar (tho not the same) as broth derived from a foodstuff, or tea from an herb.
One reason this is so important is because of faster absorption into the bloodstream, without the hindrance or digestive burden of dealing with pulp. This has therapeutic advantage, as well as the simple matter of personal taste.
But, more importantly, in the ancient practice of fasting, the difference is far more manifest. By nature and general definition, fasting means the cessation of all solid food, i.e. anything with pulp in it. Once this happens, the peristaltic motion of the large intestine stops. After 3 days or so, "hunger" pangs stop (natural stomach contractions), and the body enjoys a nice break. During this time, the energies are expended elsewhere, to remove toxins, expedite cellular repair, and so forth.
Natural diet accomplishes cleansing too. There will never be a conflict between these two approaches because they are really one in purpose and direction. The difference is that fasting (done responsibly) accomplishes this quicker. It is also a great tool in emergency situations when things must happen fast. Fasting is not a substitute for natural diet, but rather a wonderful compliment to it.
Some have a strong aversion to fasting while others naturally gravitate to it. All is okay here. I would only point out that fasting becomes more critical as you get older, as various toxins, pollutants & debris have had more time to accumulate in the vital organs and tissues. (Most of us were raised on a s.a.d. diet).
Blessings,
brother bear

Well, blending and straining is indeed an option! I won't put grass in my Champion because it bogs. It works, but I don't want to overdo it. Blending is an excellent option here! Or possibly chopping up the grass in small segments before going in Juicer. This is where units like the Green Star (upper model) really shine.
So then the natural question arises..
Why don't we all just use blenders?
This has been debated before.
While not crazy about debates, here's some possible answers:
1) Quantity and Speed - Juicing goes a lot faster in an actual juicer for those who wish to make large quantities. Plus, no need to strain, generally speaking.
2) By straining, you won't get ALL the juice out of the pulp. A minor consideration, to be sure. The best juicers will extract more from the pulp.
3) Some do not want their juices diluted. Another minor consideration, but it still matters to some.
4) The need for a New Toy, lol - the biggest, baddest mega-beast juicer on the block.
(Maybe it's a guy thing, lol).
I'm sure there are other reasons.. lol.
P.S. - I know some Fasting Bandits who would LOVE to get their paws on your Breville! LOL.

Actual weight has become increasingly elusive at this point with juicers. Weights vary around the web. Some specs refer to "shipping weight" as opposed to actual unit weight. Not always a huge difference there, but sometimes the difference amounts to a few pounds. The weights listed here are strictly unit weight, not shipping, inasmuch as they could be ascertained. Again, a bit tricky & elusive out there.
Other specs become elusive too, such as the actual motor - referred to in "watts", and in extended torque specs (resultant from slower speeds or RPMs) turning 1/4 hp into "4 hp", and the like.

There are many more juicers out there (multiple dozens of brands & models).
The juicers mentioned here are among the most popular. It is generally preferred to buy a brand that specializes on juicers as opposed to a me-too model marketed by a very diversified company.
Slower speed options are preferred, especially for those designed to handle wheatgrass. Also for high-volume juicing and stringy vegetables. In both cases, there is a tendency for the pulp to heat up under pressure, potentially harming certain properties in the juice.
For those who can't afford a juicer presently, blenders are a viable option if you don't mind adding some water to get the process started. Then it must be strained, but still can result in an excellent juice. Blenders can be had cheap at thrift shops everywhere. Just burn through them until you can get your hands on a good juicer.
CITRUS JUICERS
Citrus juicers are absolutely wonderful. I have found several, used, for well under $10. With these, you never have to peel the fruit as you would with regular juicers and blenders. (Don't try juicing citrus peels.)
Also, get a Braun, Oster or something with a nice, heavy motor.
This is for two reasons:
1) The obvious would be to prevent premature burnout. These juicers are not always easy to find used. Even new, they can be somewhat elusive.
2) I have a Betty Crocker that is so light, occasionally the whole darn juicer starts spinning on the counter while pressing down on the fruit!
Look for citrus juicers that offer different size reamers. These are also called "reamer heads", "cones", "coneheads."
(Click on thumbnail image at bottom of post)
http://images.productserve.com/preview/952/23397664.jpg
It's a drag juicing a large grapefruit on a small reamer, squeezing the sides of the peel around the spinning reamer, all whilst pressing the fruit down and rotating it on the reamer to get all the pulp. Plus keeping a finger or two upon the juicer itself to prevent it from moving around. Forget it. Get a citrus juicer with at least a two-reamer set. One good design is where one inserts inside the other, providing stronger support. Maybe get a backup juicer with an extra large reamer for huge grapefruits or pomelos.
Also, look for reamers with sharp ribs. These dig into the fruit flesh better and save effort. On smooth reamers, you have to press down harder for the same results, and this causes more strain on the motor.
Some citrus juicers offer a reverse gear to get the reamer going the other way, with the idea in mind of getting more juice out of the fruit. I have one of these. This feature is not impressive. First of all, it's temperamental. It tends to start reversing at unpredictable times, or not when you want it too. Also, it's precarious. It always feels like a gear in there could very easily get stripped. Maybe some brands execute this feature better. But I never noticed it getting any more juice out. It seems to be just a gimmick. Always choose quality before gadgetry. And if you can get both, go for it!
Lastly, there are hand juicers. The ones with the crank are okay, if well constructed. I grew up with one of these.
http://www.mildreds-antiques.com/images/best_C04_juice_king.jpg
They are not as thorough in squeezing out juice, but still produce excellent quality.
Don't bother with hand citrus juicers, unless you're going out into the wild, or traveling.
http://www.egullet.com/imgs/egci/cocktails/cocktail5.jpg
They are not much fun.
So, summing up:
- Heavy motor
- Different sized reamers - the more the better
- Extra large reamers for some fruits
- Sharp-ribbed reamers vs. smooth ones.

This juice extractor can handle whole-piece juicing and features automatic pulp ejection for continuous operation. All juicing parts are stainless steel. Unlike the Nutrifaster or Ruby Juicers, the Miracle MJ comes with a form-fitting waste pulp receptacle. This makes it easier relocate the juicer since it does not have a pulp tube.
Special key screws and unscrews the cutter blade/strainer basket and detaches the pulp ejection chute.
Alimentary alloy cover with wide circular feeding hole (nearly 3") accommodates whole or large pieces of fruits and vegetables.
Stainless steel 6.2" cutter blade.
Removable 9" centrifugal strainer basket made of micro-perforated sheet stainless steel.
Easy-to-clean, removable stainless steel juice bowl and removable chute for externally ejected pulp. Solid metal arms safely grip juice bowl and cover.
Pins position juice bowl on motor block for vibration-free operation.
Stainless steel motor block houses a quiet, asynchronous 1 HP motor.
Patented locking-unlocking system for safety activates electric cutoff and motor brake when opening.
Non-skid rubber feet.
Includes a form-fitting waste pulp receptacle.

I almost transferred control of the FB social group to you. RFT has made changes that allow you to invite someone else to lead a social group for a while. Thought it would be nice to trade off now & then, amongst the FB members.

Hi there..
I just read through all this topic and I think you might like these videos as they show exactly how every machine is working and also how hard it is to clean it:

Hi, I'm new to this blogging and really am hoping to find out if there are other juicers there (not centrifigul) that leave a dry pulp. I find that the champion juicer I now have requires the pulp to be run through 2 times and it's still not dry which means a lot of juice is wasted. Any ideas or feedback? Thanks, Gloria

what do you mean by usage? Do you get a dry pulp? How does that work for you?

glorias - There are many good juicers on the market. The Champion is a basic "800 LB Gorilla" which could probably be had for cheap these days on Ebay, etc. .. if you just want a good workhorse. But if you want *really* dry pulp, then you'll want to:
a) Not have price as the dominant factor in your decision..
b) Avoid all centrifugal and single auger juicers.
Instead, look for the twin auger style juicer which can operate at a lower speed. There are a few good ones, the best of which just might be the Greenstar. Personally, I've not had the pleasure of owning a Greenstar.. but credit to whom credit is due. Only be prepared to drop $500, that is, for the best one with full-on wheatgrass juicing capability. Or look for it used. (Nothing wrong with used.. most folks who part with great juicers are sadly ignorant of the goodly benefits they can afford.

Figured I should add my testimonial here since not many have used this one. The Omega Vert VRT330 Juicer is the best, easiest juicer I ever had. It practically self-juices. I've tested several and also have owned some for awhile. The Breville started adding pieces of produce to my juice and oxidizing quick. I also love how you can clean the vert while assembled. I don't believe I'll ever go back to the cheap juicers again and this is way easier to use than the other similar juicers that produce good quality juice.

Thank you Dimond for mentioning the Omego VERT 330. It looks like a nice juicer. Here's some more info that I found on it:

VERT Juicer Model VRT330 from Omega Juicers
Available Color: White
The latest introduction to the Omega line is an exciting new design in the recently created Upright Juicer category.
The Omega Vert Juicer is a completely different mechanism where fresh juice comes from squeezing rather than grinding. Omega Vert Juicer is a newly developed patent product which is capable of making soy milk, vegetable extracting, fresh squeezed fruit juice, etc.
LSJS (Low Speed Juicing System) squeezes instead of grinding which allows the juice to maintain it’s pure color, natural taste, nutrients and vitamins.
* Convenience and Quality in one - Enjoy the convenience of a centrifugal juicer (size, space, ease of cleaning) with the efficiency and high quality juice of a single auger masticating juicer
* Low Speed Juicing System - two stage design crushes then squeezes your fruit, vegetables, leafy greens and even soybeans instead of grinding or cutting. This extraction method preserves all of the natural color, taste, nutrients and vitamins of what you are juicing.
* Auto Cleaning System - simply pour water through between juicing different fruits, vegetables, leafy greens and more. Save time and effort
* 70 RPM for peak efficiency
* GE Ultem Auger with Crushing Ribs at the top support the initial crushing stage of juicing
* Equivalent to a 2 HP Motor
* Commercial Condenser Brushless Motor
* Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) Household and Commercial Approval
Specifications:
* Model: VRT330
* Voltage: 110/120V/60Hz
Also available - 220/240V/50Hz with a 3-Prong European Plug for use overseas

Hi, I just watched Jennifer Cornbleet's Raw Food Made Easy and saw that she uses a Green Star juicer. It's actually quite expensive at $450 but I like that it grinds the vegetables instead of chopping them up, making the vegetables not heat up nearly as much. Also, as much liquid as possible is extracted from the vegetables so you use less.

Hello,
I am going to S. Korea for a year, so I'm contemplating getting a manual juicer as the plugs there are much different and I don't really want to buy a juicer I will only be able to use for a year. The manual one seems like a good one to have if there is ever a power-outage as well.
Here is the one I'm looking at:

I just got the Omega VRT 330 HD. I am really happy with it!! It did good on carrot juice yesterday morning - although my sister commented it was a bit gritty (pulpy).
I guess it was a little pulpy but it didn't bother me. Today though when I juiced some greens it was really pulpy! When I got to the bottom of the glass, I couldn't finish it without straining it. It makes really good juice though, but I definitely needed to strain the green juice.

I think the best juicers (http://www.wheatgrasskits.com/omega8003.htm) are usually the Omega brand ones. They are very affordable, and still produce juice that rates right up there with some of the very best from expensive juicers. For someone "starting out", or even people who have been doing it a while, I suggest Omega.
