Hello everyone I've been lurking around these boards for awhile, and this is my first post. I'm wondering what type of fast would be the best to start with? I'm a 28y/o guy with little experience in this area. I have water fasted twice for only 2 days each time. I'm not raw yet, but appreciate the benefits that are claimed, and basically looking for a way to detox before commiting to a raw lifestyle. At the moment I have been having alot of joint pain, and have gave up my active lifestyle of working out which I did daily, and I miss it alot. Could fasting help with this pain? Would an apple fast be a good place to start, or something else. I hated juice fasting, I tried it, but seeing as how I hate juice it just doesn't work for me. Any advice on how to approach this would be appreciated. Thank you very much.- Steve.

You could try a green smoothie fast.
Lots of people do that and find it good.

Scorpio, I too had terrible joint pain. It would hurt all over just getting out of bed in the a.m.~~arthritis runs in my family. Anyway, just being on a raw diet has helped with that. I am currently on a fast (first one), but just after being raw for 2 weeks did an amazing job of easing joint pain.

Thank you both for your responses. I have thought long, and hard about it, and decided I will go raw for a few weeks, and then start a water fast for 3-5 days. Hope all goes well.

I'm starting some kind of fast this week, probably a juice/smoothie/soup fast. It's a start. It's my understanding that doing a healthy, balanced raw diet for awhile before starting a water fast is a good idea. A quick detox can be uncomfortable, but if your ready and willing, why not try it. I'd start with one day waterfasts at a time, but that's just me.
A raw diet has helped me a lot with inflammation and joint pain. It happened very quickly, too.
Good Luck to you, and welcome to RawFoodTalk.
Even a 1 day water fast is extremely beneficial. :) As long as you're not on any type of medication or have a fear of fasting, go for it.

i wonder why combo juices you made that you say you don't like juice. after all... there are about a million combos so i find it hard to believe you can't find a few you love.
how about pineapple/strawberry? or watermelon... perhaps a nice tomato/ginger/garlic with a touch of cayenne, curry and kelp powder?
there's always cantaloupe which is amazing... or a simple apple with cinnamon.
i prefer to do more simple mono blends myself. but from what you've shared... sounds like you could benefit more from a juice feast than a fast. a feast is very healing.
a feast is one gallon of juices a day. (and a gallon of water)...
hope your journey into raw is wonderful! i started off with two short 8 or 9 day juice feasts and then went raw. it totally worked for me!

Well I don't hate juices per say, just the mess associated with making them. I'm not a recipe type of guy eigther. I much perfer just eating something already prepared then having to prepare it. My juicer also broke, so now I have no way to juice anyways. Maybe i'll go on a cantalope, and bananna fast seeing how much i love these fruits. Thank you all for your replies. Also I found that juice fasting makes me much hungrier than just plain water fasting.
