I'm absolutely amazed! The Houston Chronicle had an article in today's paper (1/7/09) entitled "Get Fresh and Eat in the Raw"!!!!! And it's almost a two full-page spread! Four recipes were even included. Here's the link:

Strangely enough, I bought a newspaper on a whim today, as I don't usually don't read it.

The link does work. Interesting article!

The comments at the end of the article seem pretty typical of when anything goes against the USDA "norm".

I felt it presented raw as something risky, and it flat out calls it "extreme," which rankles me:
“Eating a raw-food diet full time is what dietitians call an ‘extreme’ or ‘fad’ diet,” said Catherine Kruppa, registered dietitian at the Houstonian Hotel, Club and Spa and nutrition director for the U.S. Olympic diving team. “But having a full raw meal once a week or once a day can be a great thing; most of us aren’t consuming enough of those healthy foods.”
...a raw meal once a week? Yikes.
and
"To get protein, she loads up on kale, among the most protein-rich of green vegetables."
...as though raw = protein "deficiency."

I guess we can't expect them to know everything, though, huh?

Also, I think featuring someone who's 80-10-10 could be off-putting to a lot of people who read it as some low-fat torture and deprivation diet.

And those comments, sigh. Ignorant.

Still, bottom line is it's cool they ran the article at all.
