View Full Version : Where would you live?

In a few months, we will be moving....to somewhere! Right now, we are stationed in upstate NY and the snow and ice were fun, but we are over it for sure.

Going to DH's hometown isn't really all that appealing, so we are two steps away from throwing darts at a map. ;)

I, personally am a tropical person, and DH loves mountains. I grew up in California and don't miss it one tiny bit. I'm looking for ideas!

So, where would you live? And why?

Can you leave the US? If you can Costa rica is amazing. There are beaches, Mountains and rain forests.

I am heading there when I retire. Its an amazing country and the people are so nice. And the food... talk about fruits and vegatables!

are you able to go ANYWHERE?
or do you have to stay on the mainland USA?

In the mountains in New Mexico. (Taos, for example)

If I happened to win the lottery, I would move to Hawaii. That way I could fly friends and family over to visit. But from what I've heard, I would just love all the fruit hanging on the trees waiting for me to pick it.

Of course, never been to CA either, but the raw food lifestyle seems to be pretty prevelant there. And a long of growing season of many varieties of most things on my salad. And there's beach and mountains.

If mountains weren't in your mix, I'd say Florida. Can you say mango?

Good luck with your choice. A very big decision indeed.

Austin, just 'cos it doesn't snow for more than a day every few years.

Deffinately anywhere that you can get fresh, raw fruits/veggies year round......let us know where the dart lands. How amazingly fun!!!

Somewhere with lots of land, off the grid and away from all the noise and bustle of life. If I find it, I'm not telling anyone where.

We could leave the US if we chose, since DH will be getting compensation (100%) for his injuries while serving. I have often thought of laying on a Mexican beach for 6 months of the year and then flipping a coin about where to spend the other 6 months!

We could go anywhere, but are only willing to go places we could take our pets;)

I really didn't think this choice would be as hard as it has been. Talk about underestimating my own brain....

DH's hometown is actually Albuquerque, and we do love New Mexico, but for the grace of avoiding toxic family, we are going elsewhere. I feel very landlocked there as well, but oh how I miss the people and culture. Indeed, a beautiful place.

WOW! good for you that you can go where you like. if you want raw food Hawaii is raw food heaven.
but... if you want to lay around on a mexican beach for 6 months you could
do that in the winter and then in the summer montana is SO fabulous !
and so is Alberta Canada. have you seen the film open range?

the mountains are to die for. then you have the opportunity to eat the fruits that grow up there in the summer. OUTSTANDING blackberries !

if you have the time and the funds to be able to divide your time between places .... THATS the way to go! then you can have the best of all of it!

enjoy your agony of choice ! and remember you can can always go somewhere else if you dont like where you have landed.

keep us informed on what you decide.

Back in the day - we were also stationed in Upstate NY, in the Navy ~ Saratoga Springs area.

I'm originally from outside Chicago, but 20 years ago we moved to Washington State. We've been to many states over the years, lived in several too ~ but nothing compares to the beauty here in the Pacific Northwest.

We too have mountains, rain forests, the coast, the Sound and desert.

This state takes my breath away!! The entire NW corner which is The Olympic Peninsula is not to be believed. I love it here! *Ü*

Ha! When I went to Alaska, I fell in love with it. But I didnt move there because I was afraid a bear would eat my pets. ( I have 2 miniature goats and a pig, 2 dogs and three cats.... I would be DEVASTATED if anything happened to any of them)

Then Costa Rica I was thinking I could put them all in my Van and drive down. But they have some really big snakes down there and that would freak me out if I had to worry about them. My solution is as they die I am not getting any more animals... ( yeah, right! Lets see how long THAT lasts)

Keep us posted on where you end up.

I've loved most of the places I lived in... Germany, Norway, Austria, Slovakia. But I'd love to live in Iceland. Or Denmark. Maybe even the Netherlands. :)

LOL, I LOVED living in Atlanta and like the south in general! But California is great too.

Brazil's countryside is SO beautiful and peaceful, and you can get the most beautiful tropical fruit for a song! Mmmmm... And I LOVE that the winter in the US is the summer there, so if you don't like cold weather, there or anywhere else in South America would be inexpensive, different, and fun. :)

Your dog might have to get used to more freedom, though! All the dogs I've seen in South America (except in the city) just roam around and hang out without a care in the world. They also chase a lot of cars. Not a bad life.

If you are staying in the states I would definitely say either Hawaii or Austin, Texas.

Hawaii just because I'm sure being raw and healthy there is super easy.. you could learn to surf too! And Austin, Texas.. well, that city is just amazing and is my heart. People are super friendly, health is a big concern there and all things green, it's funky, there's always a ton of live music to listen to, and there's just a great vibe in the city. I love it!

good luck!

I'm there now ~ SoCal. California is SO big. You can live in one city, move to another and feel as though you are in a different state or country even. There is so much richness, so many varieties of food; such a blend of cultures. I can go to a farmers' market every day of the week and grow my own food year round.

The temp gets REAL cold (to us) for about two weeks out of the year and REAL hot (to us) about two weeks out of the year.

I LOVE California! Place I "could" live ~ Scottsdale Arizona (but I hear it's unbearable heat in summer), San Francisco, maybe (from what I hear) parts of Oregon and Washington (not the rainy parts) and Costa Rica. Hawaii would be on my list as well.

Have you been to Hawaii? I would LOVE to go there and check it out. My favorite friend just went there a couple weeks ago and got me a bunch of raw macadamia nuts from there!

I have to second Austin as being a great place for raw foodies. There is so much health focus, although in my experience there is also a lot of the "lighter" drugs everywhere. I'm happy to just do my own thing no matter what others are doing -- but it really is all over the place and could potentially be annoying. Still, good farmer's markets and good vibes all around. :)

I have not been to Hawaii yet but one my best friends and I were talking just the other day about planning to go for new years 2010 for either the david wolfe gathering thing or to see spearhead (my favorite band) who play there most every new year. My friend went to Hawaii recently and has told me how amazing it is! (she is not raw)

as for austin.... what you said made me giggle.. I guess "light drugs" could be a lot of pot heads .. lol... and yes, there are other drugs around as welll, but if you don't get into that scene it will not bother you. Oh, the farmers market's in Austin are great! And I do know of a few health and wellness centers out there that are at least vegan if not raw. I think there are also a few raw food chef's out there and a meetup.com raw food meet up in the city as well. I lived there for a year and am just dying to get back there. I'm currently in Central New York and it's freezing!

I also should have mentioned southern california. Seems like there is a raw food restaurant on ever corner! LOL. My friend (the one who I was talking about hawaii with) lives in southern cali and now I am hoping to go out to visit her early 2009 and maybe visit some of those raw food restaurants.

Revvell... if I made it out your way would you like to have lunch with me?? ;)

anyway.. great suggestions everyone! I wish I knew more about raw food hot spots in Europe and the rest of the world though! Oh, it sounds like the UK has a little raw thing going on.. in Brighton maybe?

LOL yes, that's what I meant about Austin. I just didn't spell it out. I do a lot of work for a company there so go out there to meet with them. I've made a bunch of friends there, but they are just so casual about some drugs! Aw well, to each his/her own, right?

Yes, I'm making a worldwide raw food directory and had to push California off because there is just so much. I can't post anything until I know it's accurate, and dang there are a lot of restaurants there!!

Oh, it sounds like the UK has a little raw thing going on.. in Brighton maybe? I'm working on that! Give me a few weeks, doing lots of research. :) There is a raw food place called (I believe) Manna in Brighton and supposedly it's the most "crunchy granola vegetarian hippie" place in the UK. I went to 3 raw restaurants when I was in London, and there was one more I didn't make it to. They also have a raw food delivery service! :)

Yes, I'm making a worldwide raw food directory. . Rawsome! What a great idea!! I've been thinking about something similar to that.. so will it be a website or something???

oohhh I didn't know London had some places but obviously they would. If you haven't heard of them there is Shazzie out in the UK and Kate "Magic" Wood in Brighton who used to own a raw food cake/cookie shop I believe but I don't think it exists anymore which is a bummer.

BTW Revvell.. I would love to hear you interview Kate "Magic" Wood on your show. I know she is good friends with Shazzie and your Shazzie interview was one of my favorites!! You both were laughing so much!

http://uncooking101.com/florida-raw-food-restaurants.html It will be on here -- a bunch of states are finished, but I haven't uploaded the master directory and a bunch of the pages are in progress. :)

I took lots of pictures. They were great! :) I almost went to an event with Kate Wood at Manna! It was on the same day that I went to take a class with Chad Sarno (a fantastic chef), so I couldn't go. :(

Well, there are lots on the west side.. we have Leaf in the valley and Cru over on our side. Au Lac is down the ways a bit. The new ones are going to be on the west side and in Hollywood. Told him we need more on the east side although Hollywood is not THAT far.

No, I don't eat there often. Don't go out much; usually make my own food.. I know what I like. We like Cru a LOT though. $50+ for two people.

I lived in Cyprus for 3 years and they poison dogs and cats there.
It is nice there weather wise. I was living in Cyprus the first time I started raw. The fruits and veggies are really nice there. Dates, Fresh figs, oranges...this part I miss. For those who don't know where this island is... it is surrounded by the Mediterranean, just west of Egypt and Jordan. South of Turkey.
