I recently just stumbled on the info that tomatoes shouldn't be stored in the fridge!! yikes I never knew this!!!! Also mushrooms keep for sooooo much longer if you store them in a paperbag in the fridge. yep, it worked wonderfully!!

I was wondering if anyone else wanted to share how they store fruits and vegi's. Even if it's the simplest tip that everyone should know:)

I started to store more of my food outside of the fridge, not really sure what should or doesn't need refrigeration? like apples? avocado's?

It takes longer than normal for this link to come up, but it is an extensive list. And an interesting site.
I get a weekly CSA box from them. I trust their advice to be as good as their produce, which is excellent.

Tomatoes taste too mealy if I put them in the fridge. I can't eat them if they're mealy (I just got into tomatoes 2 years ago, cause I couldn't stand them before). I guess it's more up to taste and how quickly you use your produce. I keep lemons/limes, cukes, lettuce, cabbage, kale, spinach, carrots, apples, pears in the fridge (these I buy much). On the counter I keep tomatoes, onions, oranges, avocado, garlic, potato, yams, bananas.

If I can't use up some things quickly, I bag them on put them in the freezer. Otherwise, I give them away before they spoil (which happens often :o).

I have always thought the big tomatoes become bland the longer they are in the fridge..but I don't know the real specifics behind why! The little grape tomatoes that I buy in the package say on the outside - never refrigerate:confused:

thanks for the link, nice list!!!

I know I can store my lettuce leaves like romaine and red leaf for almost 2 weeks by cutting off the stem and drying the leaves completely than laying them inside a produce bag with a few paper towels
