im in hawaii right now for a vacation. i'm currently visiting the Big Island. I find it to absolutely beautiful here. Perfect weather for me, amazing landscape, resources for outdoor activities, and all sorts of tropical fruits. I believe there are at least a few people on these boards from Hawaii. Overall, how do you rate it in relation to being a raw foodist? I'm assuming it would be easier with the consistently warm weather and abundant fruit?

i used to live in the islands and i dont think there is a better place to be raw if you like tropical fruits and their GREAT avocados! i wasnt high raw at the time but my next door neighbor was and he and his mother were ALWAYS bringing home coconuts he would find on the roads....and papayas and mangos and all kinds of fruits that you can get for free if you know where to look.
And LOADS of bannanas ... all different kinds.
oh and ripe breadfruit is SOOOO delecious when its REALLY ripe.
its like a smooth custard. SOOO YUMMY!

YEP! hawaii is raw paradise. just go to the HILO farmers market on saturday and see for yourself !

one word - awesome!
I've been to Moloka'i, Maui, and the Big Island, and all are loaded with fruits. Our last trip was to the Big Island, and yes, the Hilo Farmer's market is a raw foodist's dream, plus if you are staying with someone or meet someone, sometimes they have extra stuff because everything just grows abundantly. From my experiences, I would say the Big Island had the greatest variety of food on account of the different micro-climates and terrain, with Maui being a close second, due to differences in elevations meaning that different crops could grow well. The experience of eating REALLY REALLY fresh fruit in abundance cannot even be described it is so amazing! Within the 3 weeks that we were on the Big Island, both my husband and I noticed a difference because even though we weren't really raw at the time, we just ended up eating most of our food raw anyway, basically living off what we got at the Hilo Farmers' Market, with some stuff from another market or two and a health food store in Pahoa. I haven't been to Oahu or Kauai but I'm sure those are amazing too in different ways. It's no accident that many raw foodists are in Hawaii, or other tropical places like Costa Rica where there's a growing contingent of health and eco-minded folks coming in from the US.
I just found out that we have a strong possibility of doing a house swap with friends in Moloka'i in April or May, as they would like to come to California, so this would be totally cool! The lady is interested in raw so she knows where I'm coming from.

Wow, that sounds awesome. I'm on Maui now. I was just on The Big Island and I think I prefer the atmosphere there though. Its a little more dynamic and colorful and "extreme." Heh.

But anyway, before this vacation. Going back to raw didn't really seem doable for me. I was barely eating any raw foods and then I got really bad airplane anxiety before my trip and on my flight over here. I was getting bad chest pains, heart burn, and just couldn't digest my food I was so nervous. In response, I tuned into the only thing I figured would make me feel better. Fresh, raw, healing, undenatured food. And what better place to make the transition than in a land of tropical fruits and veggies? I've been eating as much raw as I can since I've been here and already I feel better. I look better, I have more energy, and Im so much happier. I go back to cold, cold pennsylvania in 5 days so Im going to have to anticipate a shift back to 20 degree days, little sunlight, overcast skys, etc. So basically, transitioning back into raw will be a challenge, no doubt, but I'm more than ready to take it on because it is worth it on infinite levels. Intuitively, It is just right if I want to maximize my physical, psychological, and spiritual potential.

I am so freaking jealous of anybody living in Hawaii! I would give anything to have coconuts growing in my backyard.

(Note: I live in one of the most beautiful places on earth and am grateful for that, but the weather can be crappy..)
