Those of you of a 'certain age' will know hurling in this context does not mean a game played in Scotland

After a fine day yesterday, which included my traditional New Years/Birthday hike, I was feeling a little queasy as the night wore on. This morning, I became intimately involved with the bathroom in ways (emphasizing 'way's) I had not for the 6 years I've lived here. Yikes. And it turns out, my sister has the same thing. We both stayed at our parents on New Years Eve. AND it looks like dear old mom also is affected and boy is she feel bad. She thinks it was something in the food. However, now that I have eliminated it from my system, except for the chills, aches and fatigue, there is no more up or down chucking ;) and my stomach feels fine. I think someone had a bug and infected each other....

My question is this: I am very, very thirsty. What should I add to the water to replace the electrolytes lost? Lemon has always made me thirsty...

Thanks, and Happy New Year!!

drink a coconut- they are great to replace electrolytes.

Glad you feel better!

So sorry the family has had to go through this - yikes! The coconut idea sounds good, but if you can't get one, there's a simple recipe that the World Health Organization recommends in undeveloped countries where the effects of water-borne(or even food-borne)illness is a huge problem in causing massive and often life-threatening dehydration and that is the Oral Rehydration Solution which is basically diluted orange juice with a pinch of salt and a bit of sugar. Here's a website that goes into a little more detail(you'll have to cut and paste the link to get it to work):
http://rehydrate.org/solutions/homemade.htm
Since that site is not necessarily geared to raw people, you could tweak the recipe as far as the sweetener goes, etc.
But definitely, and I can speak from experience here, that rehydration should be priority for you - dehydration caused by vomiting or diarrhea is no joke!(I had to go to the hospital once to be rehydrated by injection it was THAT bad!). Since you mention chills, fatigue and body aches, this could have been a form of flu too.
Anyhow, get to drinking plenty, as your tummy can stand it. Try small amounts at first and see how that goes, and go from there. If you don't feel any better, and you still feel very dehydrated, then rehydration at the clinic or hospital is the way to go. Usually I don't have much interaction with the medical system for myriad of reasons, but this is one situation where competent help can save your life. In the meantime, drink up. The bit of sweetness will get your tummy working properly for digestion again too. When you feel like eating, a bit of soft banana and apples will be good too. Feel better soon!

Hope you're feeling much better. I'm sorry to hear that you've been hurling (and a bit sorry to admit that I know what hurling is). :p
