I was raw for 5 months last year, felt great, and lost 40 lbs. I did slowly fall off the wagon, until I was back to my old SAD diet. I enjoyed being raw and would now like to go back to it. The only concern I have is that 2 months into raw, my hair started falling out and my nails became so soft I couldn't use them for anything (like pulling tape off a roll or lifting up an edge, they would just bend back!) Common sense tells me this is not a good thing. I would like to go raw again, but want to avoid whatever caused this. Any advice?

Wow, that would not be good to repeat. What did you eat when you were raw? Lots of greens in salads and green smoothies? I find variety is important for me. There are my favorites that I make often and never tire of, but salads and greens smoothies are staples in my daily intake. Nuts (a wide variety) as well as sesame, sunflower, pumpkin seeds and pine nuts.

My best wishes for your healthy and successful raw journey.

Two things, increase your protein intake with a raw protein powder (like hemp) or take seperate amino acids (proline, lysine) and a horsetail extract or silica supplement. That's what helped me.

Lady Green Jeans- I did have a wide variety and ate LOTS of nuts, too much, I always thought. Loved salads. Didn't really take any supplements, tho.

Inca Faerie- Hmmmm... where did you find these? Horsetail extract? I assume this is from a plant? Off to Google...

Appreciate y'all's help! :)

Hi Sugar Snap Pea, you should be able to find any of this stuff in a health food store or a place that sells natural products/supplements. Yup horsetail extract is from a plant.

Sugar Snap Pea, were you bloated after salads? Try blending them, as perhaps you were not digesting them properly. Just a suggestion.

What about fruit? What was your variety? What greens did you use in salads? Can you give a "typical day" menu for us?

Atypical day... I eat alot, you will be surprised!
Breakfast: A smoothie, of 2 bananas, 1 apple, some grapes, a kiwi, tahini, vanilla, and some agave. Or my fave: juice of 4 oranges, 2 frozen bananas, 2 tbsp cacao, blended. These smoothies would vary according to what fruit I had in the house.

Lunch: Big green salad, drsg made w cashews, lemon, agave, olive oil, herbs. or flax seed crackers, Cheez spread, hummus, assorted veggies, corn soup...

Dinner: variation of the above, forgot, an avocado daily. Fruit for snacks, and dates at night when I was craving something sweet!

Believe me, I didn't suffer on this diet, and enjoyed not having to count calories. I forgot seeds and nuts, I had alot of those too! I really did not take any supplements, am not a pill taker. At the end of this, my doc told me my B12 was low!
