You can make tamarind paste to add to smoothies, chutneys, and sauces. Remove the outer husk of the tamarind. Then soak the tamarind in water overnight. Push the tamarind on a strainer to extract the pulp/paste.

I just got some for the first time. I have a copy of Chef James Russell's Thai uncook book and he uses it. I'd never considered using it before. Going to do it today!
He says when he found tamarind it reminded him of candy he'd had as a child and sat with a bunch of it in his lap eating it.

After removing the shell and the seed you can also prepare your beverage without soaking. Just add your water or other liquid and sweeetner and turn on your blender. Recently I did just that but instead of using regular water I used water from a fresh coconut along with agave.

So, what seems like seeds will soften enough to strain?

In the following images, the first one is the pulp used in beverages that can be strained if desired. The 2nd shows the seeds that are encased in the pulp.

The seeds are too hard to soften. Once the pulp surrounding the seeds have soaked you can pick the seeds out as you mash the pulp.
Save the seeds to experiment with growing (if you're into that.)

O.k., thank y'all. Maybe I didn't soak long enough. I'll do an overnight thing and see.
Thank you for your time in answering AND posting pics. I appreciate you.:)
