Hi there,
What are the best iron rich foods (raw vegan) for pregnancy?
I'm 18 weeks pregnant with low iron levels.
Also, what supplements are you pregnant (or past pregnant) ladies taking?
Thanks and love!

Hi Nicky! I am taking a B complex from Raw Guru occasionally, but not daily as well as Vitamin D spray (vegan), Vitamineral green powder, and lots of hemp seeds. I take Algae-based DHA on occasion too (I probably should take it more). I don't take prenatals for several reasons, but the biggest reason as of now is b/c when I had my nutrient levels tested via a blood test, I was off the charts with folic acid...like, wayyyy too much. I'm afraid putting a non-natural form into my body like what is in prenatal vitamins would not be a good thing.
I too am concerned about iron. I've been doing lots of raisins, dried apricots, nuts, and tahini. I can not make myself eat greens right now, but if you can stomach them, then greens are high in iron as well.
Best of luck to you!!

Spinach is amazing for iron!!! Dandelion as well. Nettles are great, but they deplete your body of potassium.

I've heard mixed things about wheatgrass during pregnancy. I don't think I'm that clean, so I think it would affect me...detox-wise. Sometimes when a body detoxes, it also moves the baby out...detoxing, getting rid of everything. I don't want to risk it, but if others feel cleaner than I do (I say this b/c I've never fasted, juice feasted, etc) then by all means go for it.

Raene,
I remember reading that you misscarried a while ago...:( DHA and EPA is really really important for your body to keep the pregnancy going - so maybe try and remember to take your DHA supplements. Maybe even an extra dose here and there - your body and baby LOVES these fatty acids right now:o
Studies have shown that vegans are consistently deficient in DHA and EPA unless supplemented.

Broccoli and Bok Choy are both high in iron as are most dark greens (broccoli is my absolute favorite veggie). Also may want to incorporate some shredded beets in salads (little high in sugar but great for iron levels).

Thank you everyone for sharing!
I'm taking floravital daily which seems to be working well, barley grass and very occasionally a probiotic supplement. I can't do too much fat as it brings on candida symptoms for me, hence the reason for not being 100% vegan.

I just know that I crave spinach!
I take a prenatal vitamin from Trader Joe's.
I'm 23 weeks along.
