Among my emails this morning was one from our county's freecycle group. This woman had tons of organic produce from our local organic farmer FREE. Turns out the farm donates produce every Tuesday to a local church to be given away. Well, we are under a blanket of snow and ice, very unusual for this area. Hardly anybody showed up at the church, because they couldn't get there. Normally they give any leftovers to the local senior center, but they are closed for the holidays (stupid thing to do during the most important time in the year for companionship). So they put it on freecycle. She picked the first 4 who replied. I was the first. The other three got there before me and she told each to take a quarter of everything, but apparently they didn't want most of the stuff. From what I could tell, only the potatoes and some carrots were gone. I ended up with the rest: 20 pounds of sun chokes, 20 pounds of red and orange beets, several bunches of Kale, 20 bunches of radishes , 10 small califlowers, 20 pounds of turnips, 12 baby artichokes, about 5 pounds of carrots.and carrot tops. What to do, what to do. I'm on a water fast. I cleaned all the radishes, my arms wanted to fall off. I put them in water filled containers in the fridge. I know they will keep like that for several weeks. I washed all the greens and put them in gallon zip lock bags in the fridge. They should keep for a couple of weeks or so till I can change back to juice and green smoothies. The artichokes and little cauliflowers (the cute light green ones) are in the fridge also in zip locks, carrots are with my other 15 pounds, which reside in the fridge ready for juice. The turnips, beets, and sun chokes are in the shed where it's freezing cold. I think I might make turnip and sun choke chips, which I have never tried, but what heck they might turn out great. The beets will keep almost forever in the cold and they will go into my juices and will be turned into yummy salads.
It is a nice Christmas present. :D

I'm curious--what do you do with raw artichokes?

I don't do raw artichokes. There are just some things I make exceptions for. Raw is for my health, NOT A RELIGION.

Congrats! I have that one and love it, too! Makes the best juice. Only problem is the pulp left in it, at least when I'm on a juice fast and really don't want the pulp. Easy fix, though, I just put it through a fine mesh strainer. To your health!

the grapefruit juice I made had zero pulp left in it. The apple could have used a straining. I was worried that it was going to be a pain to clean but it just all rinses off - awesome!! Got to buy some big bags of oranges tomorrow. Then a trip to the farmers market for the best tasting carrots ever and I am going to try carrot juice!

For a real tasty carrot juice, add one apple and half a lemon with peel. Yumm. I love how my juicer cleans up. I normally have it all washed and put back together in 3 minutes, before my juice can even start oxydizing.

Wow!!! Isn't it great how once we decide something, the universe conspires to assist us? I would say you were totally taken care of. Good for you!

Yep, Roe, it was a conspiracy by the universe. I went on a juice fast 4 weeks ago and changed to a water fast 1 week ago, because my retirement check wasn't going to cover food this month. I knew that I couldn't go on fasting forever and would want to eat again in January. Now that's mostly taken care of and I can continue to heat my house, LOL. Things always work out for the best!

That is a positive way to look at things... not starving.. fasting.
