Is it worth getting a 3HP Vitamix, or is the 2HP plenty for long term use?
Thanks,
Dawn

I have the Vitamix 5000 model. I went to look on the base and couldn't find anywhere on it where it said it was a 2 or 3 HP???? If mine is a 2HP, it seems to work fine~~have had it for a couple of years.

I'd recommend you read at my recent review of my new 3 HP Blendtec before deciding on such a large purchase. I was almost going to get a Vitamix but once I read the numerous advatanges the Blendtec has and is "only" $325 it was the clear choice for me:

Thanks. Good review.
I would love to actually try them side by side, but I am guessing that won't be possible very easily.

i have a vita-mix 3HP and it makes ALL the difference in the world. in my experience the 2HP gets alot warmer alot more easily.
if you are going to get a vita-mix and can afford to go the extra money for a
3HP i highly recomend it.
i have had the 2HP and now that i have the 3HP i am so glad i bought it.
i use it ALOT and its just fabulous.
in fact i love it SO much that if i only had enough money to get the 2 HP i would wait till i had the money to get the 3HP.... i think its THAT much worth it!
i am sure the blendtech is a good one as well...but i dont know anyone that has one.
whatever you decide to get... go with the 3HP ! you WONT be sorry!

I suppose it all depends on how much is in your budget. Will a 2HP do the job? Of course it will. Spend what you can afford. The 2HP models are plenty powerful for most any blending task.

Ok, decision made. 5200 is wrapped and under the tree.
I have read mixed reviews on the blendtec and didn't want to take the chance, but haven't read bad reviews on the vitamix, so I went with that one. If I could see them side by side and try them that would be great, but I am happy with this decision.

thanks for posting that link. yes the 5200 is just fine. the thing about the
3HP vitamix is that it does not run as hot as the 5200. i have had the 2HP version and this 3HP version is a whole lot better.
i love commercial kitchen appliances they are very sturdy because they have to hold up to ALOT of use in commercial kitchens.
i also have a waring 2.5QT food processor with NO bells and whistles....just plain drab gray with an on, off and pulse switch and it is a total BEAST when it comes to doing the job. it wasnt cheap but its an appliance for a lifetime.
i use my stuff ALOT. several times a day on everything to prepare foods.
and i process in my vitamix for long periods of time that would overheat the
2 HP version.
i feel it was worth what i spent for what i have.
the 5200 will do a great job but wont run as cool as the 3HP.
but all vitamix products are wonderful

Just curious, what did you read that was negative about the blendtec?
Merry Christmas by the way.

Merry Christmas to you too.
I would have to go back and look up. People said they had to have their Blendtecs fixed more, but then I listened to greensmoothiegirl.com and she said she has had her Vitamix repaired more, so who knows.....they are probably both very good blenders.
Got mine up and running this am! I have made three great smoothies so far, although I don't know how I am ever going go get to the point of drinking 1 quart of green smoothie per day!
I had ice cream for breakfast! My L'Equip would make a drinkable smoothie but the Vitamix made one I could use a spoon with! WhooHoo! I felt like I was cheating!

Thanks. I talked to my husband and we just decided that we couldn't do the 3HP right now and so far (ok, only this am) the 2HP is looking like it will do all I need it to do for home use.
