This morning at my local supermarket I saw something on the mushroom label that I don't remember seeing before.......and not all of the labels had it. It said, "Clean and cook thoroughly." I think it was on portobella mushrooms, but I can't remember for sure. Are there varieties of mushrooms that shouldn't be eaten raw? This is sure news to me, if it is true. Thanks for your help.

Don't think any you would find in a grocery store, but I would definitely make sure they're organic.

I don't think much about mushrooms- I have allergies to them so can not eat them.

Cook throughly is normally on meats to get rid of any parasites that may be in them...yuk! I have also seen on the take out sushi trays that it is uncooked food so you are eating them at your own risk. I wonder sometimes if companies put things on labels because people sue for just about anything these days.

The best label I have seen is for a package of raw nuts - the label said it was in a factory that contained nuts and package may contain nuts ....no duh!

i've wondered the same thing; i bought a package of dried (organic) mushrooms a few months ago and got them home to find the same thing on the label. hope you get some answers... my best guess is that there's a high risk of toxic mold in the mushrooms if they're dried improperly, but i can't use the same reasoning for fresh mushrooms.

found this when I did a google:

"For safety's sake it is best to thoroughly cook wild mushrooms. There is plenty of bacteria in the outdoors and you could get sick from bacteria completely unrelated to the mushroom"

It may have more to do with the fact that "farmed" mushrooms are grown on manure. Just make sure they are washed well. If your read a lot about natural health you will find out that bacteria don't cause diseases, but that bacteria accumulate in diseased areas of the body. What keeps you from getting diseased is having a healthy immune system, which you get when eating raw for life.

I have eaten raw mushrooms almost all of my life, and I knew how they were grown. ;) I always figured my body would know what to do with any germs, or bacteria more easily than it would all the new chemicals that crops are grown with . I had some raw button mushrooms in my salad for dinner tonight.
