I read spirulina blocks b12.

But does chlorella also block it ?

Or is chlorella different from spirulina.

Algae doesn't block vitamin B12 from being absorbed. All it does is mask a vitamin B12 deficiency on a blood test. Algae contains substances that look like vitamin B12 under the microscope, but aren't vitamin B12. Therefore, if you get a blood test after eating algae, it could make your vitamin B12 levels look artificially high.
The only foods that block vitamin B12 from being absorbed, that I know of, are cooked foods and foods that one is allergic too. Cooked foods and bad-for-you foods create a build up of mucus, to keep you from absorbing the toxins in the cooked food. They also keep you from absorbing the good stuff, too.

Hi RawStrength...my understanding was also that spirulina blocked B12. Can you let me know where you found the info that it doesn't block it from being absorbed?

I take lots of spirulina, everyday, and am not vitamin-B12 deficient despite being vegan for a long time. I do supplement with vitamin B-12, but I only take minimal amounts. In my experience, spirulina does not block vitamin-B12 from being absorbed.

I know I read about this somewhere, but I can't remember where I found the info. This website (http://www.spirulinasource.com/earthfoodch2b.html) mentions that spirulina doesn't block vitamin B12 absorption, but the website also sells spirulina, so it's not exactly unbiased.

the science seems to support that spirulina blocks b12 receptors. the strange thing is, not only to i love spirulina (and nori!), i had more symptoms of b12 deficiency while on cooked foods, than i do on raw foods.
