I've found I really dislike the texture of soaked nuts, even after I've dried them in the dehydrator..does anyone skip soaking? I know they're not truly raw if they haven't been soaked..

Yes they are. Raw means uncooked, not unsoaked. Reason for soaking is to release enzyme inhibitors. Many don't soak.

I've only tried soaked nuts in some recipes. I had no problem with those. I have tried soaked and dehydrated seeds though and prefer them to be unsoaked and undehydrated. The soaked and dehydrated ones reminded me of roasted and I don't like roasted. When I just eat a handful of nuts, they are raw.

Haha! I don't think it will kill you, just remember that.

I only soak almonds and sunflower seeds. I actually prefer the taste of fresh soaked almonds to non soaked, they seem a little more 'milky' to me, and I like the wet crunchiness.

But as I keep reminding some people who stress out inordinately about these sorts of things on a raw diet, 'It's better than Macdonalds!'.

Just keep in mind the vast abyss of difference healthwise between the average raw diet and a SAD diet. Then ponder the fact that the stress you might put yourself through worrying about it might actually be more harmful to your health than the thing you are worrying about!

It's crazy!

I personally go for the 'no guilt, no stress' model of eating.

i have to agree with you there... i have come around to that kind of thinking and its made life alot easier for me. i feel i still get the benifits of a raw diet but i am not as stringent as i once was about doing alot of raw food prep....nuts included.
i feel as long as i am eating raw fruit and veg and i know that things are raw i dont stress about the small stuff like the occasional condiments that i might use. a teaspoon here and there of them is not going to blow my diet off track in fact it helps me to keep on track because it makes the foods really taste like some SAD things i use to like.

but you right... thats the way to go !

If that works well for you -- it's your prerogative!!! And remember -- there is NO raw food police. Even if unsoaked meant not raw, everything is your choice... When you starting "having" to eat food you don't enjoy, that's a problem. Raw food can be WAY more delicious than cooked food, but not if you're forcing down food or textures that aren't yummy to YOU.

As for me, I soak all nuts except pine nuts. I have digestive issues otherwise. It's just me, though!

To me soaking almonds makes all the difference. Their plumper and so much 'creamier'. they make my yoghurts taste nicer too.

I soak for recipes where I'm going to be blending the nuts because it seems they get creamier.

Otherwise, I usually just eat them as they are. Our ancesters who basically ate off the land didn't going around soaking nuts. I figure if nature wanted us to eat soaked nuts, they would grow underwater. :D

Not soaking them still means that they are raw.....when you soak them, they then become living food because it starts the sprouting process and also gets rid of the ensyme inhibitors. One is raw and the other is a living food.

I find that soaking them works better for me if I am making something like nut milk or nut cheeses, or in some recipes. Other wise I eat them unsoaked.:D

I've gone the opposite route. I barely soaked nuts & seeds for years. Now I always try to since I found out it actually ruins enzymes not to and causes negative effects. So just like raw isn't all about what we eat, but what we don't eat. The same with how we consume nuts and seeds.

I usually grind up unsoaked to mix in salads. Whole unsoaked walnuts upset my stomach but almonds are fine- I love e'm and get them raw from Farmer's Market. :)

I always soak. I heard a talk by Jameth Sheridan where he said that unsoaked nuts are enzyme negative and when you soak them they become enzyme neutral.

None soak, give me pimples, soaked doesn't. You get use to the taste and i find now i preferre soaked. I don't soak macadamian or pine nuts.

I do skip the soaking for walnut or pecan if i am in a rush, but i want to try to avoid it for i clearly see a different in term of digesting etc.... . Almond, i definitely soak.

yeah, I'm with him^^
I'm not even sure what the purpose is for soaking them when they taste good in their natural "unsoaked" stage.

i get acne when i eat too many unsoaked nuts. a friend of mine notices breakouts EVERY TIME she eats at a raw restaurant that doesn't soak their nuts. maybe they are sympathy pimples then..hmmm :D

i just learned something about pumpkin seeds = previously i didnt like the taste of raw saltless hulled pumpkin seeds , they tasted like zincy chalky clay to me . so i soaked a batch several hours then threw them in a strainer a few days to dry out . and now i just ate them and cant believe how much i like . the chalky zinc taste is gone , and theyre crunchier now - a more apt munchy type snack , or sprinkled on a salad . but wow its a big difference .

next test is sun seeds which ive never soaked either .

I'm so glad I'm not the only one!!!

Yea I pretty much decided that if I am eating plain nuts, I'll leave em unsoaked. If I'm making a pate or nut butter, I'll soak them, I just can't do without that lovely crunch, especially with macadamias which are my fav!!
