I always see posts about what people are eating; but, what are you reading?
I have a coupon for a bookstore and want to buy a good book. What books on healthy eating and/or the raw lifestyle do you recommend?

Victoria Boutenko's Green For Life. I loved the way she told it as an ongoing story and the information made a lot of sense to me.
Also, The China Study by Dr T Colin Campbell and anything by Dr Neal Barnard ( a really nice guy by the way, he came to Australia not long ago and I had the privilege of meeting him in person).
I also want to get back to basics and go read up on Ann Wigmore and the history of the raw movement. If anyone has any good books they could recommend me about this topic I'd be very thankful.

Great question, Blizz.
I'm currently reading the Sunfood Diet Success System by David Wolfe. Came highly recommended from many sources, and I'm definitely enjoying it so far.
The first book that got me interested in natural health was _Your Body's Many Cries for Water_. I've given away so many copies of that book! It holds a very special place in my heart. Can't recommend it enough.
Can't wait to hear what books others recommend!

I'm reading Conscious Eating, by Gabriel Cousens. What an amazing book, it's very big and full of information and research. Not only does he teach you about raw but how everything in our lives has such an impact. I'm only about a quarter way through it and it has scared me the way our world is killing us. I live in the North East where organics are slim but I will never let my family not eat organic again, especially meat OMG. It made me cry when I found out just how much harm I have been doing to my kiddos and myself all these years not having the knowledge I have now.
THANK YOU RAW!
I came across Conscious Eating from Steve Ross' book Happy Yoga, even if you don't like or do yoga it is an excellent read, it is a book I turn to daily for inspiration when the world just gets to ya!
Alissa's book is next on my list!

I was in Harrie's and the bagger was telling me about "some girl she saw on youtube name alissa who wrote a book about raw food and ordered it". I promptly directed her to rawfoodtalk.com. She was like "oh, well, i don't know who it was, but i ordered the book. I've been raw for a whole day, except the tacos at lunch"

Or a library trip for me! :P ( I can see the central library from the roof of our house [ its 4 stories ] )
I can appreciate new/used books, but after I read them they end up being ... gray matter on my shelf.
If it is at the library i'll get it. The good books (the ones I like) on things like anarchism and such aren't at the library usually though D:

Beside Alissa Cohen, i love anything with Victoria Butenko especially 12 step to raw food and green can save your life. Really enjoyed also Dr.Gabriel Cousens book: Rainbow green life food cuisine and Dr. Brian Clement book: Living food for uptimum health.
If you are starting with raw food, my recommendation is not to try to be too religious or perfectionist but to really focus on making yourself comfortable with this life style. Read any health book with an open mind and for educational purpose only. Only make the change that you are ready to stick with.
Alissa's approach is fantastic and in my opinion is the most successful to stick to raw, but i recommend to read about the greens with Vitoria Butenko. Greens really help to stick to raw food.
If you struggling with not eating meat or dairy at time, i recommend that you get the DVD a diet for all reason and a diet for a new america, there is also the diet. This, i promise will give you solid ground and faith that being a vegan is really the way to go.
Enjoy your research or any new book

Not about raw, but I am reading The Yoga Face.
Very interesting. It has the facial exercises and also a lot of yoga information for beginners or more experienced. She mentions diet, but only in general to eat whole foods.
Ooops, I just saw that you wanted books on healthy eating. Oh well, it is a good book!
i love anything with Victoria Butenko especially 12 step to raw food and green can save your life.
Was this a translated book or one in English?? I'm mostly curious because I have Green for Life in Hungarian and in English, and the title is quite different in Hungarian.
As for books, I haven't been buying them while I'm overseas, but I brought Healing with Whole Foods over here with me. It is HUGE but SUCH a WEALTH of INFORMATION. I couldn't not bring it! Very useful book. It's a blend of eastern medicine with western needs. It was highly recommended to me a few times before I bought it and also started recommending.
I would love to reread The China Study when I get back to my library, and I would like to read Diet for a New America. :)

If you are looking for a raw uncook book, I love Jennifer Cornbleet's, Raw Food Made Easy, because the subtitle is "for one or two people. Since I am only preparing for myself, the portion sizes are small, unlike many other cookbooks where you end up with a lot of leftovers that don't keep well. I use that along with Alissa's book and often interchange recipes.

Thanks for the suggestions. I looked at my public library. I agree with you, Jurence, no need to continue to accumulate more stuff. Amazingly, everything was checked out and had holds on them. I guess more and more people are looking into eating more healthfully.
Raw Angel Mom, thanks for the reminder. I'm slowly learning to enjoy the process, the journey and not try to confine myself to rules that I only adhere to for one or two days.

I don't trust my library though. They are the "big library" ("central") of Marietta yet they don't have a popular Mark Twain book i needed for my lit class.
Oh, might I mentioned it was MARK TWAIN MONTH. They had dozens of his books on display, pictures, posters etc and they DIDN'T EVEN HAVE A COPY OF THE BOOK.
There was one copy of the book, it was in downtown Atlanta and took a total of, including traffic, getting lost, running out of gas, finding gas, and refilling gas
4 hours
Its a government facility, what can I say!

"Raw Knowledge" by Paul Nison. I just finished reading "The Raw Life" also by Paul Nison. I also have my Rawkathon Transcripts which I am reading along with watching the DVD's. What I am really liking about all of the above is that I am seeing that there is a wide variety of opinions on what to eat/not eat (ie. no fruit, all fruit, no sprouts, mostly greens, few greens etc.), which makes me think that Alissa's idea of eating what your body is telling you to eat is the best way. After all we are all different.

No, they never admitted that it was plagiarized :( . But I've read both books, NFL and the work that it was plagiarized from, and they are almost identical. Deep down, I know that the authors know it was plagiarized, even though they won't publicly admit it. David Wolfe touts all of his books, advertising all of them constantly, except for NFL, which he never mentions. I feel like both authors should show some integrity and fess up to plagiarizing; however, it seems like they just want to ignore it and move on. But it really was foolish to try to write a raw foods book after just three years on the diet, no wonder it was plagiarized.

I read the Idiot's Guide to Raw Foods last night. It's pretty basic. But, what I do like about it is the recipes provide nutritional information. I know that when following a healthy raw diet and giving my body what it needs, I don't have to obsess over calories, fiber, fat... But, it's so ingrained in my mind right now that I look for it. After years of dieting, it's hard to just eat and not worry. I still find myself calculating "points" because of my years on and off Weight Watchers. So, having the nutritional info is helpful for now. I pray that one day I'll just be able to eat healthfully.

Blizz - I used to count everything, too. Raw has been so very freeing to me. Make a conscious effort not to count and soon you will forget all about calories. It's all a mind game. Try to trust that your body will naturally find balance on raw.

I have Victoria B.'s book 12 steps to Raw (best book on green leafy vegetables). I have others that are great too. Yesterday I finished "Nature's First Law. Raw Food Living" well, maybe that was the title. I know it starts with Natures First Law. Rawstrength - how does reading W.P. make you want to change you diet? I am afraid now to read it, lest I go hunt down some poor animals for their organs :-) actually, the WAP'ers had me almost convinced I shouldn't be a veggie anymore...but then one of their top doctors died of a stroke fairly young and fortunately I was able to find better info. What I have since read is that the WAP foundation has taken much of his work out of context. Now they have a cookbook positively loaded with animal fat. hmmm
I am looking back again at Alissa's book to make some special foods and raw re-inspiration, and I am reading, Jesus our Eucharistic Love, by a Franciscan, and I meditate on Bible passages most days. I am almost always reading Catholic/Christian books and/or health books. My two passions.

I just finished reading Juicing, Fasting & Detoxing for Life and Goose Girl. Both were great. I've started on Enna Burning and Inkheart (I read a lot of kid lit. because of the kids I work with at school) now and am planning to read through Living on Live Food again since I never actually finished it the first time through a few years ago.
I'm also reading the second to last book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. Not great literature, heck, not even good literature, but when I start a series I find it hard not to read the WHOLE series whether I like it or not. This is definitely one instance where the show is better than the books (by a mile).
