For those who own a VitaMix, do you have the dry blade container? If so, is it very useful for you or does it just sit on your counter or in your cupboard?
We want to purchase a VitaMix and don't know if we should include the dry blade container or not.
Thanks for any help!

I don't have one, and I am happy :) I grind small batches of flax and other things into a flour all the time with the wet blade.

Wet blade works great for dry stuff.

I know this isn't what you're looking for but I thought you'd might be interested in reading my Blendtec review since I got one a few weeks ago before making a final decision. It uses the same container and blade for liquid and dry items:

It uses the same container and blade for liquid and dry items...
...as do I AND my container is larger so I only have to make one HUGE smoothie a day PLUS, I have the option of the smaller container which I would get rather than the dry.

I have the dry container, haven't used it as yet, just got the VM last week. I will get a dehydrator when the VM is paid up. so will probably use it for grinding up seeds, etc, for crackers and other yummy things.

I have both wet and dry containers for my Vitamix - at the time I purchased mine in 2001 it was the package. I do use my wet container for just about everything - although I did burn out the wet container just a couple of months ago and called Vitamix and they sent me the replacement right away free of charge. Can't beat that!

The wet container has a thicker blade than the dry container so that it can grind up ice if you make smoothies with ice.
the dry container has a finer sharper blade so that you can grind contents very finely.
what i have started doing now is making my smoothies with the dry container because the blade is sharper and it makes a smoother grind of the fruit and veg.
B U T !!!!!
THAT SAID....... i make my smoothies using NO ICE! and NO FROZEN FRUIT!
i make them the night before i am going to use them and put them in the fridge to chill overnight.
you cannot use the dry blade for anything frozen because it will break at some point. i decided to do my smoothies this way because i want a finer blend using the dry blade. so .... i make my smoothies at night before i go to bed....then in the morning its there waiting for me cold and yummy and VERY smooth. LOL
just wanted to share what i like to do and, for me, it works out great because i dont have to worry about freezing fruit ahead of time... i just use what i have on my counter or in the fridge and it comes out great.

Don't have one, and don't feel the need to get one.

Both the vitamix and blendtec are 64oz. The vitamix just looks bigger because it's narrow and tall (which is why it won't fit under most counter tops).
((I believe BlendTec also carries a 96 ounce jar...)) *Ü*

I have a Vitamix that came with 3 containers:
Large wet
4 cup wet
4 cup dry
Of the 3 I use the 4 cup wet container every day. It is only me that is raw in my house and I love it to make most of my recipes in.
If I had to pick containers I would get the large wet container and the smaller wet container (the smaller wet container actually fits under my counter top)

I have the dry container and may have used it once, and that was for something wet.
I use my $30 food processor for nut stuff and flax crackers.

Hmmm you might not get that same sort of service with Excalibur. Shop around!!!

We have both dry and wet for the vitamix. I have never used the dry container.

I have two, the main wet canister and later added the small wet container. I have had no need for the dry one.
However, I would be interested seeing how the dry blade differs from the wet on nuts and grains.
I have ahd my VM now for three years and it is THE best purhase I have made hands down. It is used everyday.

But it does fit under counter tops ~ next to the base.
I have both containers and quite frankly I wish I would never have purchased the dry container. I use it rarely. It is good for grinding up large quantities of flax seed. That is all I have used it for thus far. So I wouldn't waste my money if I were you. I didn't know better when I bought it 2 years ago. A small coffee grinder will grind up seeds and cocao nibs.

My vote is with Morn. Bought both containers when I purchased the VitaMix. Have used the dry container probably twice in the several years I've owned it. Save your money for something else is my suggestion, too. Love the wet container and GS's are a must in my life.

You probably got your answer, but yes i do and i love it. When i make almond milk, i keep the pulp, dehydrate them and then use my dry container to turn it into a flower (this make yummy pizza crust). I used it to grind anything, such flax seed, dry celery(to make a powder and use in recipe), etc.... I would use a coffee grinder before it got my vitamix.
Enjoy!
I have both and never use or even think about the dry container. I grab a coffee grinder for small batches of dry grinding, esp. flax. I'm still glad I have the dry container though, for grinding dried herbs into powders. I guess it depends on you.
What really has come in handy for me is having the smaller wet container and the large, regular sized container. I love it! :)

Wow! Thanks for all the replies and advice!!
It sounds like the dry container can stay put with the VitaMix company since I do have a coffee grinder which I use for grinding seeds anyway. I'll just go with the wet container. I know VM has a nice holiday package special going right now on the 5200. It comes with the spatulas, cutting boards(probably cheapies), an apron and then the usual books and instructional dvd that comes with it.
Thanks again for helping me to make up my mind about the dry container. ;)

I would not be without the dry one as I grind Flax Seeds most days and it saves me a lot of washing and drying. The wet one would have to be completely dry for the flax seeds as it sticks to any wet.
