What did we do to stay warm this morning?
Suicides on 7 flights of stairs.
Granted it was 30 degrees outside already though. I was hot by the end of it.

I agree. Get up and move your body! Shovel some snow, if you have any.

-10 here, -30 where my mom is. What I have been doing to stay warm? Food (last night was a thick, chunky raw tomato/carrot/potato/avocado soup while the bf put that raw soup over cooked pasta), warm clothes (many layers), and exercise!! Nothing like squats to warm you up, or some nice old-fashioned cuddling under piles of blankets with your favourite person in the world ^_^
Chilies are going to be a good part of our diet this winter, LOL!

It's 9 degrees out with a windchill factor of -1 here. BRRRR.
I'm drinking warm lemon water to stay warm. If I was not on a fast, I'd be eating foods with a lot of fat in them as fat will also keep you warm.

You're so brave to be fasting in the winter! I did a water fast last March in 40 degree whether and I was so abnormally cold. I think the process of digestion warms us up. It is like exercise for our insides. Many people feel cold when they first go raw because raw food is so much easier to digest than cooked food.
Good luck and stay warm!
jurence

I think its much MUCH harder to digest uncooked foods
At least, takes longer
freshlight
12-15-2008, 11:42 AM
it's exactly the other way round :) it's the cooked food that takes ages to get digested and it doesn't make you feel warm at all. When you clean up your system and do a water fast,-you'll feel HOT, believe me. Our inner heater is always there, it just needs to get cleaned so that it works.
Keep yourselves HOTTT :),

I've never really liked cold weather as I was born in the Spring. But now that I'm eating living foods, I definately can tolerate it better. Give me a tropical beach and 100 degree temperatures and I'm in heaven though. I will leave the snow to the snow bunnies. :p
Jenna, I know what you mean. I don't think I could tolerate the teen weather that other regions are accustomed to. It was 39 in Berkeley last night and it was freezing! I'm glad it rained because at least we have a little humidity to make it warmer.
Eva, I do believe you're absolutely right because I'm in the middle of a water fast. I was really cold all day yesterday, but today I'm actually hot and the temp outside is still about the same. I must be gettin' cleaned out and my furnace is burning again. Yay. :D

Oh I wanted to add about keeping warm...
I've been taking hydrotherapy showers where you fluctuate by standing in the hottest water you can stand and then rinse with cold water for a few seconds. I switch it about 5-10 times. Your final rinse should be with cold water and by the time you're done you feel hot, even with the cold water running over your body. It really gets your circulation going and I can stay warm for up to 2 hours afterwards by doing this. This is also a good way to detoxify your skin and body.

Inca_faerie I am with you here in Calgary. I must say I prefer this -30 with the sun shining brilliantly to warmer but grey and dull. I NEED the sun. Of course warmer WITH the sun would be better too!!

lol at you guys with the sissy weather! hehe (j/k):D right now it's -22 which is the perfect temperature for me.(yea I'm crazy) I just finished up some raw chili that I added waaaaay too much chilli pepper to, about twice the usual amount thinking that I could handle it. 10 seconds later I realized I couldn't handle it and after guzzeling about half a can of coconut milk I was ok again. Duh. Lesson learned .
Freshlight, Haben sie auch schnee in Deutschland?
Crazy Healer Lady, that soup sounds delish! I think it would be awesome with some curry powder in it.
RawHeaven, I've tried hydrotherapy showers before, nothing wakes you up like a rush of cold water. Very refreshing.
Snoops, hello to a fellow calgarian! Wasen't it a lovely day today? I prefer sunny to grey and dull as well (except of course if it's snowing!) Everything is so bright and illuminated with the sun shining on the snow. Now it's 4:15 pm and the sun is begining to set and the sky is a beautiful pale blue with touches of pink and gold on the horizon...sorry, I get so sentimental about wintertime.:o
Happy holidays and stay warm everyone! If you have snow, go play in it! (even if you don't go and play anyway;))

Thanks for the tip. :) I added the rest of my organic coconut milk into the chili. It definitely made it milder. Still verrrry hot though.

hahaa. yes, i'm a sissy! :p
but the bay area cold weather can be deceiving. even though we're in the low to high 30's/40's right now there is a lack of humidity which makes it very, very cold. this kind of cold weather goes right through to your bones and is hard to describe. especially if you happen to be along the coast or in SF fog. i actually think i can handle the weather in the northeast (where i was partially raised) better even though temps are lower. it's the humidity factor.

SheLovesToEat, it must be beautiful in the neveda desert too, especially now with snow capped mountians. Wanna trade places for a while? I've never been to the desert before! hehe 30 degrees :p I used to live further up north where -40/-45 was pretty common in january and february. If your inside it's ok but that kind of weather is not enjoyable to be outside in at all. You get little ice crystals on your eye lashes if you're outside long enough.
Sugar Snap Pea, how about -45 with a windchill! (that would make it feel like around -50)
RawHeaven, there's a total lack of humidity here as well, it's so annoying because it makes you completely static! I've zapped myself twice today already lol

i cant even manage to deal with weather when it gets into the 30's.
i am just a warm weather girl..... i like lots of sun and heat so i can run around bare legs and feet with no coats or sweaters to bother with.
right now its too cold here to have the doors and windows open even when the sun is out. i miss the fresh air comming in.
i was raised in a cold climate and i hated it from the time i was a child.
when others were dreaming of this toy and that..... i was dreaming of palm tress and lots of sun and warmth.
i ran from it as soon as i was old enough to do so. you are a very hearty girl to be living with that weather.
try to stay warm.... eat lots of hot peppers LOL.

Potassium from Pumkin or squash will keep you warm. Cayen pepper, ginger also.
Warm tea sound like a great idea.
I am glad that i live in Ontario, oh good lord this is cold in your area. You are talking celcius, aren't you?
My first year going raw, i was always cold even in July but now, i find that i stand the change of weather either warm or cold so much easier. Raw food rock.

its about 20 degrees here and we're in the process of getting up to a foot of snow. a lot of people still don't have power up here from last thursday's storm and with snow and ice this weekend there might be more outages.
i'm drinking celery-apple-spinach juice and wearing cozy slippers, cuddling in bed. thinking about making warm spiced pecan milk later, that sounds pretty nice. i'm also a tea drinker... i know many aren't, though.

SheLovesToEat, yup -45 is rather nippy, but at night when you look up in the sky and see the nothern lights (which are absolutely breathtaking) it makes it all worthwhile. Sometimes I dream about white sandy beaches and the sun warmed ocean, but I don't think I'd be happy at all without a good cold long winter every year. Haha I guess I'm pretty hearty (or just crazy). No more hot peppers! noooo mooore! No doubt I'm probably going to have nightmares about being chased by 50 foot hot peppers...lol godzilla chilies!
Raw Angel Mom, thanks for the suggestions!:) Yup I'm talking celcius. Keep on rawkin'!

Yowzas, in other parts of the country about now! Here in SF we were cold with temperatures not breaking 50 for a few days, and down into the upper 30s at night. But that IS cold for this area. I know what really cold weather is like though - the first 33 years of my life were in the cold damp Northeast, and then I headed West, with a 12-year foray into high country in New Mexico where yes, it does get cold but it is usually dry!
Anyhow, here's another tip to keep you warm especially outdoors, or even in a cold house, a special type of breathing called ujjayi breathing in Ashtanga yoga. Google this, and you will find out just how to do it. A few rounds of this has warmed me up just fine when out in the cold winds in the high country. This is a lower-level variant of the Tibetan practice called Tummo, whereby a nearly naked monk could sit on the ice in frigid temperatures, and melt it, and warm himself up so that he did not feel the cold.
If you are sitting around your place just feeling cold, get up and do some Suryanamaskars, both variants that open an Ashtanga yoga session, and you will be warmed up in a hurry, if not sweating already. Or do the Tibetan 5 Rites of Rejuvenation - will do the same thing to warm you and dispel the sluggish feeling that staying inside in cold weather often instigates. Both of these things you can do when it is just beyond awful to go out! If you CAN go out however, and there's any sun, it will do you good. Just walk fast, and do that ujjayi breathing. Also, if the air really is icy, like under 15-20 degrees, wearing a scarf pulled up over your nose is good, as lungs don't like icy air too much, especially if one has any tendency to get chest colds and the like. Last but not least, keeping up one's exercise during these cold months and especially during the holiday period will keep our immune systems going strong too.

this is SO fascinating!!! Thank you, cara4art for posting this--> I didn't realise you can change so much through your breathing technique

Hi freshlight! - Oh yes indeed it can! Consider this - we can live without food for quite a while, weeks even(although few of us would want to unless fully prepared beforehand for a major juice or even a water fast or something), only 3 days without water, and only 6 minutes at most without air...
Also, that ujjayi breathing, and almost any deep breathing technique utilized along with movement is designed to send oxygen to every cell in your body, thus energizing and guarding against disease, as well as warming you up in a hurry. This is how good yogis can practice in a cold room, utilizing their own internal heat generation abilities. In "hot yoga"(aka Bikram)that heat is provided for you in the 100+-degree room...
Try that, in the cold, and see how that goes. Do dress sensibly though - you don't need to be like the nearly naked Tibetan monk or yogi...There are those yogis who say that the breath is THE most important part of the practice.
Anyhow, stay warm!
