So I drank some regular, packaged (pasteurized) hemp milk last night. I really wanted some Two Moms in the Raw granola (since I don't have a dehydrator, it's a big treat for me), and I got this Living Harvest Hempmilk from WhoFoo to go with it. I had the granola on its own and was fine. Then a few hours later, I had a bowl of it with the hempmilk, and within 5 minutes, my heart was pounding, I felt almost dizzy, and like I was crawling out of my skin!!! It's my first reaction to something packaged since going raw. I promptly dumped out the rest of the carton. I'm wondering what, exactly, in it might make me feel so awful - so I can know to avoid it in the future. Any thoughts?

Ingredients: Filtered Water, Whole Hemp nut (shelled hemp seed), brown rice syrup, natural vanilla with other natural flavors, disodium phosphate, xanthan gum, calcium phosphate, vitamin A palmitate, vitamin D2, Vitamin B12, riboflavin.

I guess, if nothing else, it just goes to show ya - even if it claims to be all natural and whatnot, doesn't mean that it's good for you!!

You are SO Right. Hemp is also an "HERB" some get "HIGH" on. I have never tried it. Maybe they did something different to it. I really don't know. It also could have a been a bad batch. Always save something you purchased and take it back to the store for a refund. Sometimes they will give you a refund when you tell them of your Bad experience. I just keep it Simple.

You can't get high from that type of hemp since it would be illegal. It's a processed food not raw and these are all toxic so it could be any of them: brown rice syrup, disodium phosphate, xanthan gum and possibly others depending on where they're derived from. The brown rice in the syrup isn't sprouted, could be that simple. Or just the fact nothing is raw.

One possibility might be that hemp is relatively high in glutamic acid, one of the amino acids we need to built proteins. Glutamic acid is not bad in itself, yet it can create a problem when it is heated. Heating glutamic acid will increase the amount of so-called free or unbound glutamic acid, which is essentially MSG. The more glutamic acid a food has naturally, the more free glutamic acid (or "natural MSG") can be created. Also, always be weary of "natural flavors" - these can contain all sorts of bad stuff, including free glutamic acid.

Just a thought. You should be fine with raw hemp milk.

yeah, i do just fine with raw hempseeds on their own - never made my own hempseed milk, 'cos i think it would be pretty expensive... so i was thinking it was something else in it..
yeah, and the box says 0.00% THC, so it's not that.
i think it might actually be just because it's not raw. wild for me to have such a strong reaction to it, though, it's my first negative reaction to cooked food since going raw (other than a heavy feeling).
what really threw me for a loop was the thought that, before i went raw, my food was actually making me feel that bad all the time - i was just so out of touch that i didn't realize it.

I think it might be the brown rice syrup, it's a concentrated sweetener your body probably isn't used to being raw....

Thanks, JBB. That sounds the most plausible to me. I was scratchin' my head wondering what purpose that served in there - didn't realize it was a sweetener. It also makes sense that the vanilla mylk would bother me more than the original flavor - there's more of that sweetener in it, probably.

I think you experienced your body questioning the food because it was pastuerized and due to all of the ingredients. It's not so much that you got sick, but that your body has become so fine tuned to eating well that it immediately tried to kick what it deemed non-beneficial (maybe all of the additives). Your symptoms bring to mind minor detox or the body trying to rid itself of toxins. If you look at in reverse, your body is getting stronger & healthier. It seems it's very wise to when you eat packaged foods now and it's not having it. lol. I don't think you would've had the same reaction had you poured fresh made hempseed milk on raw granola.

Here's a quick recipe for mylk:
Blend 1 ripe banana and 1/4 cup of your favorite nut or seed with 1 cup water. Voila! Instant nutmilk. No straining required. To clean up, just rinse your blender.

just wanted to clear this up: you can't get high from hemp-ever. hemp and marijuana are two completely different plants folks.

as for what could've made you sick...i'd say that just the fact that what you ate was processed could've done it.

Anything with phospate in it, i wouldn't touch. Buy the raw hemseed and make your own milk. It is easy and you don't need to strain the pulp for they disolved with your blend it with water. Any good oil exposed to heat turn to bad oil too. This drink has to be pasteurized so this isn't raw

I think YOU answered your own question. First off the milk was processed (thus the packaging) second OTHER NATURAL FLAVORS could be ANYthing.

Stay away from packaged "stuff". Make your own.

you know what, i think there's msg in this!!

i remembered a post from somebody awhile back saying that "natural flavoring" on a package can include msg. sure enough, that's on the hempseed milk! also, brown rice syrup can include msg. and this particular hemp seed mylk includes xanthan gum, which according to wikipedia:

Some people are allergic to xanthan gum, with symptoms of intestinal gripes, diarrhea, temporary high blood pressure, and migraine headaches. Workers exposed to xanthan gum dust exhibit nose and throat irritation as well as work-related illness, with symptoms becoming more prevalent with increasing exposure.

just wanted to share this info in case anybody else was considering buying packaged stuff!!! beware!!!

I have no idea what exactly gave you such a bad reaction but wanted to mention that I made some raw almond milk for the first time this week....missing putting soy milk into green and fruit smoothies....and this almond milk is REALLY good. It takes about 5 seconds to make and makes alot. This particular recipe doesn't strain the milk but still it is very nice and smooth and who really cares because I'm putting it in smoothies.

Oh yeah. "they" can label products as being natural like if they contain "natural" ingredients like petroleum for example! It's freaky!

Lol, just because it's natural, doesn't mean it's good for you! Fire is natural, and I wouldn't go jumping into it. Deadly nightshade is also natural, and deadly.

I hope your feeling better now, Curlygirl. Enjoy your brazil nut mylk in good health!

thanks, all. i just had no idea. i'm spreading the word, though - about nasty msg.
the nerve!! :)

i guess i'm back to: you don't have to worry about reading labels if you just don't eat anything with a label on it.
