I'm wondering if anyone has a list of foods which shouldn't be eaten raw - I'd like to have such a list up in my kitchen. I found this page:

http://rawveg.info/rawfoodtoxins.html

but it seems a bit extreme to me - not figs, celery and parsley?! I'm also trying to find out which vegetables perhaps shouldn't be eaten "as is", but might be okay, for example, marinated in lemon juice or ACV.

Thanks,
Lisa

LOL, I eat all of those things. Where do people come up with the idea that they can't be eaten raw??

Interesting list.

All I can say is I for one will continue to eat those things because I think what is beneficial in them outweighs what harm they might do...and of course watch how my body does. It's good to be aware and have information. I know for me, I could make myself really crazy if I focus on things like this!

All I know is mushrooms are really hard for our body to digest when they are raw. It is recommended that they are eaten cooked. I saw it on the show Sunday Morning, they had this whole segment about mushroom hunters and gathers, it was really cool. I personally don't really care for mushrooms so it isn't a problem for me lol! My husband was disappointed when he heard that, he loves mushrooms.

The thing is, even fresh greens have trace toxins in them. This is why we need a varied diet. Those toxins in celery aren't killing us, but making us stronger, as long as we're not eating it day in, day out, and it's not a huge part of our diet.

I even blend apple seeds now and again right along wit the apple in my smoothie

apple seeds contain a form of arsenic but it's not harmful to us. i eat them all the time.

I completely agree. It's Nature's way of saying "hey! widen your variety!"

Why aren't there more sites like:

FOODS NOT TO EAT:
Corn Syrup
contains toxins that cause one to gain weight, eat uncontrollably, etc.

People only want to attack raw foods...except for us! are we the only sane ones?

Fiddlehead ferns!

There is some way to prep them, because I had them at Grezzo on an appy plate and they were delish, but I went home and tried to do a raw marinade of them and almost ended up in the hospital. BLECK!

As for the raw items on that list.......yeah, right. That is probably the silliest website I've ever seen. If someone want to be fearful, they can always find what they need to support that mindset.

Aleesha -how do you know it isn't harmful?

Leneveu - I would recommend staying clear of raw sprouted large beans like kidneys and black beans.

LOL
Apple seeds are toxic, infact they can kill a person if eaten alone, they act like rat poision within the body by themselves, If you digest them along with the apple they are fine, werid eh?

I laugh at what people say are toxic, I mean really where do they get their info., from the media? lol Mushrooms are great for you eaten raw. If you hear it on the television it is probably not true. IMO! In fact get the thing outta the house.

Really how else would celery be eaten? Cooked? What fun would that be?

Variety is what it is all about, we try every green available in the produce dept and the go thru it again and again... you get the picture.

Yes, some beans are BAD for you in sprouted form, I will go an look for info on this, (I know I have it). I will start a thread when I get it together. I do know there are only a few that should be eaten raw (sprouted beans).

I bought an orange colored beet one time because the color was so beautiful. I washed it (scrubbed it, actually) and then shredded it into my salad. After 3 bites, my throat started to burn and it hurt really bad. I happened to have colloidal silver on the shelf and that helped take the sting out, but didn't get rid of the burn totally. I had to wait it out for awhile.

I'm not sure if it was just me, but I wouldn't serve those to anyone else, just in case.

"Contain a cyanogenic glycoside: amygdalin. AKA laetrile, prussic acid, vitamin B17. Amygdalin is claimed to be an anti-cancer compound. It releases toxic cyanide when digested."

The idea that a life essential vitamin would be harmful is absurd, this is a myth that's promoted by modern medicine as B17 is one of the best anti cancer vitamins. The cyanide it contains can only be released when the vitamin comes in contact with cancer cells, making it a natural "chemotherapy" that kills cancer cells only while nourishing non cancere cells. Here's a documentary explaining this in detail:

I read somewhere else that orange color beets can cause a reaction. I think the red ones are okay though. Maybe it is not everyone who reacts to them. I'm not sure.

I sometimes have a similar response (though not as severe) to beets in general....

It is my own opinion that apple seeds, ingested with the apple, form a quite nearly perfect food. The minute amount of cyanide in them is of no consequence, eaten in context with the fruit. :p

Kidney beans, uncooked, are indeed toxic!

Also, beware of potatoes!
Fresh & raw, no problemo.. tho you may not find them particularly palatable. But if the are gettin' kind softy.. and sprouty... avoid them like the plague!!!

One day I saw this lonely lookin' potato. I thought it would be cool to take a bite (as I had done before with no problem). Back in the late 70s, this was a sort of "in" thing.

So I took me a wee little bite - that's all.

Shortly after, I felt some indigestion comin on, and no amount of burpin' brought relief. Then I was in for the time of my life! I grew deathly sick! I barfed away in the bathroom, and my body wanted to barf more & more -- the dry heaves. I was on my back for hours on the bathroom floor, trying to hold down some hot tea that my worried newlywed wife gave me. No go. Barf barf barf! It sounded like crickets and frogs all around me, going "crik! crik! Ribbit! Ribbit!" Very weird. That day I got my first intro to ptomaine poisoning!

So watch it with raw potatoes!! ;)
