does eating a lot of raw grains cause weight gain?

I've recently found that if I eat, say, a soaked buckwheat porridge blended with some fruit and seeds for breakfast it holds me much better than fruit/green smoothies/juice...

this is good for me as I have major issues with binge eating and I need to feel as "full" as possible so I have the willpower to avoid binges...

so I started eating a couple of large portions a day of soaked buckwheat or quinoa...

but I put on my jeans this morning and they were VERY tight compared with a few days ago, so I'm wondering if too many raw grains cause weight gain?

Any ideas? :D

Hmmm ... Im not sure but... I would that that the reason why people lose weight on raw is because of the water content of fruits and veggies.. and they are digested better etc.

grains could be very high calorie..and im pretty sure even if raw, arent digested very easily - NOT SURE only what comes to mind.

If you snoop around, not many people rely on grains.. some dont eat them at all. <--- is what I have found

ya, imo, raw doesn't magically make you your ideal weight...it's still calories in vs calories out. Raw helps make losing weight Easier if that's what you need to do because of the high fiber and water content that a lot of those foods have.

Heavier foods = heavier.

Probably get argued on that, but that's what I think.

No you are absolutely right. Its call the Law of Thermal Dynamics (energy in vs. energy out, ie calories in vs calories out). 3200=1 lbs of fat. So if you are consuming more calories then you are burning you are going to see weight gain.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter if its broccoli or cheese. Now you are probably going to fill up in 100 calories of broccoli and 100 calories of cheese would barely qualify as a snack. Thats why many people drop weight so quickly when going raw. Fresh fruits and veggies have a much lower calorie count then the typical American diet, so you feel way stuffed with less calories.

Our (holistic) MD doesn't advocate eating grains, but if we feel we 'must', he said a little oatmeal once a week or so; stating, "I don't know why people feel they need grains, all they do is make us fat!"

Just passing along what he said... *Ü*

I could never eat 100 calories of broccoli in one sitting, unless I juiced it.

Actually Buckwheat is a fruit, and not a grain. :) Buckwheat shouldn't cause any bloating problems, but like the above posters said, if you are eating too much of any one thing energy wise, it can make you gain weight if you aren't burning it off.

Here is some info on Buckwheat:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckwheat

If you are eating grains, they are not easily digested and can cause bloating.

1 cup of raw broccoli has 40 calories or so. Can you imagine eating 2.5 cups of broccoli and not being stuffed!!!

thanks for the ideas guys

think I'll limit myself to one portion of grains a day now

but they're useful for keeping me grounded and getting enough calories in, I tend not to get enough in the morning and then end up bingeing on the slightest excuse in the afternoon cos I'm hungry.

Any tips for filling up???

thanks :)
