View Full Version : Juice fasting - again

Okay I've decided to do a short juice fast. Anywhere up to 10 days as this is all the time I have before we have Yule and Christmas functions to attend.
I've been feeling very low (with my mom's death) and my bladder is really tender. My abdomen is bloated... lower and upper - but I'm not retaining water as my fingers are still slim (rings sliding off) so I'm not sure what's up. I figure no better way to deal with dis-ease/illness than fasting so I'm doing it for a few days.
Today I had lots of water, prune plum juice, watermelon juice and a carrot/ginger/beet (with beet greens) juice. Probably 3 litres of juice and at least the same in water so far. It's 7pm so I don't expect to be drinking much more now.
Anyone else fasting and want to join me for a few days?

Good, listening to your body. Fasting is so very healing indeed!
I fast every Mon-Wed & Fri. Three days out of the week, this is working well for me. I have been drinking 2.5 liters of Jungle Juice during those days. I feel like Jolly Green Giant! (the organic version) I include a liter on my "eating" days too.
So I am with you on those three days. After my last fast which lasted 152 days, I have decided that I am going to be fasting three days like this indefinetly. It just feels right, and as you already know I do not like to eat. I like to drink my food. Now I believe that I currently have the best of both worlds...:D
I will do a longer fast upon the Solstice as I normally do.

Aleesha- Sorry to hear about your mom. Prayers coming your way.
Bladder.....maybe add some cranberries in the juice mix? Just in case?
I'm not up for a jf this time, but maybe around the first of the year before I go off to my next Vipassana retreat.

Oh I soooo want to do a Vipassana retreat. I'm going to be doing a 4 week yoga teachers training retreat instead next year. But a meditation retreat is on my list of things to do in the next couple of years. One of my little angels is still too young to leave for long.
Melissa, I'm so glad you are joining me. (((hugs))) I love fasting with ya sista! Perhaps in January we can do an extended fast together! You know you want toooo - you knoooow it! *teasing*

You go girl. I've been in touch with the bandits about a New Year hoedown. I've done some short ones myself lately. But the main event is comin in Jan. All the local citrus trees will be ready by then too. I foraged a bunch last nite :D

but they still green on the tops.
Meanwhile, if I get the impulse to fast soon, I'll join ya on the hiway.
Need a water truck?
Sorry to hear about your mom. :(
It's just that tyme of life, ya know? Since '99, both my parents and my older & younger sister. Just me & my older brother now, and he's got leukemia & a body full of nicotine & morphine. So he won't be around too long. That makes for a strange journey, being a sole surviver. So I can definitely relate.
Blessings

(((hugs))) who do i love more than you? no other bear that i can think of!!!
i could sure use a potty truck... cause honestly this liquid feast is going through me like there's no tomorrow!!!
oh and by the way, don't tell melissa but her advice for the beet and carrot juice... well... it was super yummy! mmmm i added a bit of ginger to it. i don't wanna tell her though cause then her head will swell and well, you get the picture *giggling*
*blows her horn and speeds on past*
I'm sorry to hear about your mom too Aleesha. :( I can't even imagine how painful that is for you. {{{{hugs}}}}
I'm here with you on your fast. I'm on day 3 of my juice feast. Isn't it day 4 when the hunger leaves? It can't get here fast enough! I'm starving tonight! I better up my intake of juices tomorrow. I think I may have slighted myself today.
I hope your fast makes a difference in whatever it is that is going on with your body. I'm having some issues too and I'm hoping a juice feast will heal my problems. As usual, no set date for stopping. My past two feasts lasted somewhere between 3-4 weeks. I hope to do at least that this time. Longer would be great.
I'm so cold that I'm really wanting to drink a lot of warm drinks. I've had several cups of herbal tea today. Some hot apple cider sounds very appealing right now. I wonder if I juiced some apples and warmed it slightly with a little bit of cinnamon if that would be similar. Has anyone ever warmed up their fruit juices a little bit? That sounds so comforting to me right now. I always drink my juices in a glass full of ice and I'm just staying way too cold!
I have a bag of cranberries in the freezer. I'd love to juice those. Anyone have a favorite recipe using cranberries?

I've juiced cranberries and apples together then added some lemon juice for a homemade cranberry cocktail. Very yummy! Cured my bladder infection too :)

I can blow my horn louder, ya know? You take more pee stops as well, so you know what that means...
Now add in a lemon to that carrot beet juice and you got something special going on!
An extension on my fasting routine is always a possibility. he he he
Dude
I did a bit of foraging this day as well. Nope the OJ is not ready, the lemons are sooooo close, but I did come home with a basket full of Barrell Cactus fruit. Its wonderfully delish! It has a tangy citrus taste. Alex and I ate most of them today already, heading out for more in the morning.
My front yard is a farm of Aloe Vera they are huge like 3-4 feet long, we drink the juice daily its refreshing and simply delish as well.

A 152 day fast, that is really interesting. Did you intend to go that length of time? Was it like a Juice Feast? How much weight did you lose? I am just curious about your experience. :)
Aleesha, I am so sorry about losing your Mom. I can't fast with your right now because of the pregnancy, but I think a juice fast is a really good idea.

12-07-2008, 11:06 AM
roo, i think it's a great idea to warm up some apple juice - i may do that later today! mmm sounds yummy. yes it's around day 3 that your hunger stops. if upping your juices doesn't get rid of your hunger - a day or two of water only kicks it to the curb.
liss, how about some lime instead of lemon... i had a bunch of limes in the fridge right now. ah goooood... i'm happy we can fast together again later this month... i'm soooo looking forward to it.
last night i slept in my long underwear for the first time since i stopped fasting almost 2 months ago. my body was still cold at 3 am. i could feel the super warm air under my covers but my body was still chilled. i actually smiled... it was nice to feel cold again. i know i'll be 'not-so-lovin-it' soon enough... but knowing i'm fasting again feels sooooo darned good.
my face is broken out, a canker sore in my mouth and my gums bled a little when i brushed my teeth. i'm very pleased about all of this. toxins depart!!!
thank you all for your thoughts and hugs regarding my mom. (((feelin' the love)))

Aleesha, Sorry to hear about your loss. You must have had a very loving relationship with your mom. It took me some time to come out of my depressed mood over my mom's death. But now I can talk about my good memories of her with a smile and I look forward to reuniting with her in heaven. I hope not too long from now you will be able to think about your treasured memories of your mom without too much grief.
I am joining you ladies from tomorrow morning. I intend to do a lemonade fast. No set date for stopping. Maybe a month. I do have a few pre-arranged socials to attend in December. I will eat light at those functions and come right back to my lemonade.

Thank you Jen. I can think of her and not be sad. To be honest... I feel like I'm fine... but my fuzzy brain and lack of initiative seem to say something different. :(
I warmed my plum prune juice this morning and am now sipping on some warm apple/pear/ginger juice. I love that it's not cold... since I am often so cold anyway... this way my body temp doesn't come down while drinking my juices. We have a hot water tap here... so I'm just adding some of that to my partially frozen juices. It defrosts them for me AND warms it at the same time. ;)

had a teaspoon of garlic/ginger/honey this afternoon as a little something something.
i'm peeing a lot - so i'm pleased. every time i pee... i get a glass of water to replace it.

persimmons are so high in vitamin c... and i bought a case a week ago and still have lots left... so i'll be having this treat again tomorrow!

Hail fair bandits, rulers of the road. Bless me and mine for tomorrow we are on the fasting highway. I say "we" because it is a family affair whenever I am fasting. (LOL)
So I will be along side of you tomorrow when we are running from the smokies. They can never seem to catch us, a good thing! I will be blasting my radio so you will know it is me comming up alongside of you.
We will be out of town working all day tomorrow, so I have already made my juices for the day. It is simple because I cannot stand making green juices ahead of time, they suck! Even if you make them an hour beofre you drink them they are Nasty! So tomorrow I will be drinking fresh Aloe Vera juice. I went out to my yard and choose 4 very long, thick staulks and made 4 liters of juice for the day. I will drink three and I made an extra one for my guys. Since I am not doing an "official" green day I will add some Chlorella and Spirulina nuts to my tummy during the day...
Keep it real!
Raw Love

spirulina nuts?
i wish i could say i share your love of all thing aloe. *blah*
I didn't try the warm apple juice yet because I made the cranberry apple lemon juice that RawSar suggested and it used up all my apples. I juiced a bag of cranberries, 4 huge granny smiths, and 1/2 lemon. It was Divine! Maybe my favorite juice thus far! Thank you RawSar! I tend to stay away from straight fruit juices due to sugar issues but I took a reading a while after I drank the cranberry juice and I was fine. Yea! I'm going to stock up on cranberries.
When I go to the store tomorrow I'll get more apples and try it warmed up a little bit with some spices in it. That sounds so yummy for juice fasting on a cold day!
Not a big fan of the aloe either Aleesha. At least not for drinking. I'll do it when I'm having digestive trouble, but I sure don't enjoy it!

Spirulina nuts are formed just like chlorella when it goes thru the drying process. It is nice expecially when you are out of town, the powder form of spirulina makes a heck of a mess sometimes. Alex loves the "nuts". It is easier when your blender is at home.
"i wish i could say i share your love of all thing aloe. *blah*"
Aleesha, I can remember you telling me this when you drank your first Jungle Juice. lol Remember that? Try it again, it will grow on you, just like Green Smoothies and Jungle Juice did.
Remember that this is Fresh Aloe I am drinking. The stuff you get in a bottle at the market is not any good! Not raw either.

ya i'll try it again since i bought two plants to juice... but i won't like it *stamps feet*
*giggling* hmmmm cranberry apple lemon... sounds like another one to add to my list of "must try"

I'm with you. I've been feeling down again lately and just not feeling well so I started my fruit fast today. Started with Lemon juice and plan on having apple juice later. I plan on going to the store this week and buying cranberries to juice (which I have never done before). Hope everyone has a great day. Stacy

Do cranberries have seeds or pits or something we need to be aware before juicing? There are tons of cranberries in the stores now and I would love to get some to juice, they are so good for you, but I don't want to trash my juicer.

No, nothing to worry about. No pits in cranberries. I do suggest juicing a few apples with them so they aren't quite so tart.

*nodding* I agree. I often add cranberries to my green smoothies... but alone as a juice... they would be 'notsoyummy' but the combo sounds good!
i slept well last night which i really needed. my head is still soooo heavy though. i guess this is part of grieving but i sure am not fond of it. i realized yesterday that it was one month ago that mom passed. i figured i was done grieving when i had a good week in there... guess not. i'm feeling sooooo done with grieving. my grama died a year ago, then the mom of a friend of my daughter's died of cancer this year - this summer one of my best friends committed suicide and now my mom. i feel like all i've been doing for the past year is grieving and i know i've barely even started grieving my grama... *sigh* i want to just get over this. that may sound cold - i don't mean it to... but oh man i'm soooo done with this foggy fuzzy head.
back to fasting talk. i'm going to dry fast this morning since i have yoga and i don't like leaving to go to the bathroom during class... so i'll wait to drink till i'm in class and then afterwards.
Aleesha, now is not a time for me to fast, but I wanted to send hugs your way. It is so good that you are taking care of yourself instead of turning to ice cream and chips and booze. That's what lots of folks seem to do when the going gets rough. I don't fault them for it, most of us aren't our best selves when difficult times hit... but it really bites a person in the butt to stuff down those emotions. You are going to get through this in a way that honors her spirit, I'm sure of it...
Aleesha Sattva

just got home from yoga and i'm off to get myself a double shot of wheatgrass and some freshly squeezed oj!
Aleesha - sorry to hear about your mom. I just did a 10 day fast around Thanksgiving so I am not quite ready for another one yet.
Sending Hugs your way!
On another note - When you do long-term fasting did you change your view on doing enemas or taking something to help promote bms or are you still naturally letting your body elimate on its own. I am gearing up in my head to do another long-term fast in the spring and I really want to be better prepared on what I should be doing next time. Any wisdom would be appreciated.
Aleesha Sattva
12-08-2008, 09:20 PM
I didn't change my views at all. My body still eliminated just fine on it's own and my detox was sooooooo "almost nothing" that I did just great.
Melissa did 152 days... with no assistance either. She did drink lots of Aloe Juice though which really got her bowels moving. IF I felt like I needed some assistance... I just juiced up some apples and drank them down. I'd have a BM within about 30 minutes. But for the majority of the time... my body just flowed!
Very hard day today. I cried a lot this afternoon. Stopped in and treated myself to a double shot of wheatgrass and orange juice (1L) TWICE!!! We are super short of cash right now so this was a major treat to gift myself but I really felt like I deserved it today. I needed to feel like I was important and that was a way to allow myself to feel that. My hubby was thrilled to see me allow him to pamper me (he drove me there both times).
I sure do love that man.

This is day 12 of my fast. It's a fast this time, not a feast. I get about 30 oz. of juice a day, mostly carrot/celery/apple with a small piece of ginger and some cranberries when I remember to put them in. I put very warm water into my juice, since I don't like cold things. I also drink a lot of warm water in between. I use my coffee mug (I haven't had coffee in 4 months) and it is really satifsying. I guess my body is easily fooled. I've lost 11.5 lbs in the last 12 days and am now just maybe 20 lbs away from where I might want to be. My eyes are going crazy. Some days I can see pretty well, and today at the store it seemed they had turned most of the lights out and I could hardly see in that semi-dark, but it was just my eyes. I will continue on my juice fast for another week or two and then be brave and change to water only. On the other hand, I keep thinking about food. The thing is, I'm out of money already for the month so fasting is perfect. A 25 lb bag of organic juicing carrots at the farm down the road costs $12 which I can probably come up with, if I run out and don't want to do just water. Christmas is going to be weird, totally alone and nothing to eat, lol. Anyway, I'll be fasting with you guys for the forseeable future.

Emma, I'll be with ya in spirit for christmas (((hugs))) I'm glad for the update on your eyes and your fast. I actually really enjoyed doing water for 15 days... I thought it would horrid but it was really no different from doing juices except... I had absolutely ZERO prep time. It was a huge break from juicing... truly a gift to myself. I also was able to do some detoxing and if you remember... I did very little detoxing on my 12 week journey... it was like the water fasting took me to another level the juice just couldn't take me to.
misslinda... I'll be done fasting on the 23rd but I'll be starting up again after Christmas...

Thanks Aleesha.
I am down to 152 lbs today. That is 69 kg, just 9 more than an MD in Germany told me when I was 18 that I should try to stay under for life, because I had a goiter when I was young. Of course I didn't do any such thing. I went beyond 101 kg (which is where I quit weighing myself, so I probably went up a bit more). Anyway, I'm very pleased with my 1/2 to 1 pound weight loss a day. I know I'll probably go below my ideal weight on the upcoming water fast, but that's great. Once I eat again (and will stay raw), my body will automatically go up to the weight it needs to be. Isn't fasting wonderful! My BMI is 22.4, which is right in the middle of normal weight. The website where I checked it put me in the 13th percentile of Americans, which means that 87% have a higher BMI than mine. Amazing! I was bordering on obese just a year ago and was still well in the overweight range when I started eating raw.

Really my fasting for that long was not intended, it just happend, time flys by right? When Aleesha told me where I was at, even I was shocked at the days I had fasted for. There is no better way to celebrate the holidays than fasting, (IMM) No questions from others, no pressure etc... All you need to say is no, I am fasting! They either blow you off or ask questions, all in all it is good plan. I have been fasting during the hoildays for years now. Simplicity is what I am all about.
Should I or should I not? Dec 23rd -- hummmmmnnnn thinking, thinking wait-thinking. well OK I am in for a solstice fast! You know me, can't pass up a solsitce fast! Only I will be doing it very differently this time, I will be consuming Jungle Juice only. I know, it is different for me, but I have issues which I will not discuss here. Well, 152 days is just plain AWESOME. And I TOTALLY believe in it. How much fasting bliss can you take? BTW, I believe "Fasting Bliss" was a term coined by Misslinda. (???) It belongs in the FB glossary. :D
I have never heard of anyone fasting for that long ever in all my research.
Well, the case histories are impressive. In Juice Fasting, Dr. Paavo Airola writes:
At the Stobhill General Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, fasting was clinically tested with remarkable results. One 54 year old woman with a painful arthritic condition and grossly overweight, was put on a liquid fast for 249 days and lost 74 of her 262 pounds. As a pleasant "side effect", her arthritis cleared up completely, too!
Really my fasting for that long was not intended, it just happend, time flys by right? When Aleesha told me where I was at, even I was shocked at the days I had fasted for.
Like mother, like son. No wonder he loves his ba-ba! :D
A lot was going on in our lives and it is what it was. It worked for me in that rough time in my life.
Yes, you and your precious family really went thru some hard times. I think that you will be in the position, from your experiences, to speak into the lives of others who will go into similar hard times. In many regards, (socio-politically, prophetically, historically, statistically..) we are trending right into that. I think that you would have a lot to say on the subject of survivalism.
In tough times, fasting also helps us to be spirit-aware.
While not given to undue fear, spiritual vigilance is part of the reality we live in.
And it is wise to exercise it.
But you already knew that, didn't ya? ;)
Soooo happy you and your family are doing well! :)

What a strange day for me, I am still in lasts night's PJ's. I am tired and lazy. I felt like treating myself to some "down" time today and it feels wonderful! I have not even opend the door to feel the sunshine.
What I drank this day:
Apple parsley juice
Collard carrot ginger lemonaide
Beet carrot juice
Chlorella
Now it is almost 10 and I hear a pineapple calling my name, (really strange for me to eat/drink this late) So Pineapple spirulina it is.
Good night fellow bandits!

ah thanks bear (((hugs))) i'm so glad i'm fasting... all i want to eat is horrid yucky unhealthy crap... so this is the best thing for me. it not only keeps that crap outta my body but i believe it'll assist my healing process (aka grieving process) to move forward rather than stagnate.
i am soooooooo happy to have the bandits by my side again... i sure did miss you all!!!

I can't tell if the new Bandit group is working right. Feels so weird, being the "moderator' of it. And there's ways to approve/disapprove selected messages (can't imagine myself ever disapproving a bandit post), an when you select them and hit the button to "approve", it doesn't work right.
Aleesha, can you see my response there? I really don't wanna be doing this "approve" thing and hope things just work as normal.

The groups are separate from the forums. I couldn't even find them listed on the main RFT page. Instead, they seem to be linked to people's profiles. ;)
Also, it appears you can't edit your posts.
I'm sure the Fasting Bandit threads will continue as normal - in the regular forum.
The FB group seems a nice home for the Bandits, in between fasts, & regular fasting threads, where can can officially gather our info & resources. Kinda like a Bandit pit stop. :)

I feel a bit fortunate to live around so many citrus trees - orange, tangerine, grapefruit, tangelo, lemons.. even pummelos and kumquats if you know where to look. It's no Oregon or anything, but ya gotta do the best with what ya got. And this place is crawling with citrus. People don't care if you pick it because so much of it grows over property lines, and they'd much rather have a Big Mac anyway. My son came along today - the apprentice forager a.k.a. "baby bear". I shoulda brought the camera. It was hilarious. Next time.

Have fun at your parties, Aleesha. Hummmn good question, I am not sure if anyone else is fasting here. MR is dreaming of a fast, maybe he will join in the Solstice fast. ET will too, maybe if he gets enough foraging done. he he he. We will see ML then as well, and Path man? Where is he parked?

Yes, great foraging success. Stocking up for the big one. But it's still a bit early for pickin. Some trees are ready, some not. Peak pickins will be January..
I know we can harangue & cajole MR into a fast, then he'll "hate" us for it, then love us to death for it.. for the results, that is. Such is the way of the roman eagle.
He fly highest who have light load. :D

I'm still fasting. Today is day 17 continuous. I found some tomatoes on the budget shelf at the farm store. I've been adding those to my daily quart of juice for the last three days, and today my vision ws quite a bit better than in the last few weeks. I will continue with the tomatoes, even if I have to pay full price. I was down to 149.5 lbs (68 kg) this morning, which is great considering I was at 164.5 17 days ago. I'm 5'9", so I'm beginning to look a lot leaner. It's fantastic how easy it is to lose weight when fasting, which in itself is so easy once you get used to it.:D

I'm on Day 2 of my juice fast and I'm wondering about the pulp in the juices. No matter how much I strain the juices at home - specially the green juices, cantaloupes, etc. - there is always some resildual pulp left... This is also the case with the juice that I get made from the juice bars. How to tackle this, or is this ok? My understanding is that juice is never going to be water and even with no pulp whatsoever, it is still going to require some digestive work in the intestines. The digestive process with never get a 100% rest unless it is a true water fast or a dry fast. So a little bit of leftover pulp seems to be just a slight amount of more energy spent by the body on processing compared to completely clear juice. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks - F.
Aleesha Sattva

it's fine. i never worry about it. IF you find your hunger is not going away a day or two on water will cure this and you can go back to your juices without any hunger :)
