Where do I find them? I LOVE hummus...and I know if I can make it raw, I will survive. I have DRIED beans...but assume those are heat dried (right?) so I need to find them raw....

If they are organic, they will probably be raw. Soak and sprout. Heated beans do not sprout.

ok...but would they be in the produce section? Coming from a SAD background...I don't know if I've actually even SEEN a raw bean. Dumb, I know.....

Nooo, not dumb. There's a difference between ignorant (just don't know) and dumb. Is there a health food store near you? If so, they'll possibly have dried beans/peas in bulk; if not, they'll have them packaged. If you go to a chain store, they might also have them in bulk ~ or at least packaged. Unlikely they'll be organic though.

If they can't be found locally, might do a google search for organic dried beans. Also, someone reading this might help you there.

Oh! O.k, I'm pretty sure you can get them from GoldMine Natural Foods. Mail order yet great service and quality.

Best to you ~

Please be very careful with raw/soaked beans and legumes. They naturally have inhibitors that are not digestible for humans. I had horrible food poisening by eating raw red beans. The only legumes/pulses I digest well are sprouted lentils, soaked garbanzo (some gases) and peas. You have to try, but the curved beans are definetly cannot be consumed raw.

Victoria Boutenko says on her website (www.rawfamily.com) that most uncooked beans are toxic except for garbanzos and three others, I think.

Hi, tvillemom :)

I actually found some fresh, raw garbanzo beans at a Whole Foods Market! I was so surprised as I've never seen them or seen a recipe calling for them. They are a beautiful light green; found them in the fridge section in a tub. Tasted yummy; not like sprouted dried beans.

If you choose to make the hummous with sprouted beans and don't like the flavor (I don't care for it, myself; too chalky), then here is one without garbanzos that looks interesting (haven't tried it though): http://www.living-foods.com/recipes/nobeanhumus.html
I'd like to try this one soon myself; If you do, let me know, please, how it came out.

This is probably why my raw soybeans taste attrocious. YUCK, while I ate them in the past I was thinking "are these things poisoned". lol

Now that's scary....maybe I'll stay away from raw beans.....

Good decision. (I personally don't eat them -- well, I do eat mung bean sprouts and other bean sprouts -- but not just sprouted beans.)

There are lots of yummy raw dips that you can make that might take the place of hummus in your mind. VeganVixen posted her own not bean hummus on this forum and it was really tasty. It doesn't taste like hummus, though, but I don't care. It's very flavorful.

Jaurequi....I've got everything to make this recipe with, so I'll try to make it today! I'll let you know, I'll post my results in a separate thread so you can find it.
