View Full Version : problems I've had with the raw diet...

I've tried several times to convert to a raw diet. I first tried doing this in 1985. I tried again in March - October this year and I've abandoned the diet for now to try to research things better before trying to do it again. On the positive my lab results when I was raw were all very good - all my numbers were really good. But there were some severe problems for me: I had extensive trouble cognitively to where I couldn't function, and each time I tried the raw diet I had this problem. Each time. Everyone commented that I talked in circles and didn't make a lot of sense, I had limited energy and basically I had a lot of trouble taking care of things. I measured how much protein and vitamins I was getting raw and I'm not sure what I was missing, I'm pretty sure I had enough protein - I"m not sure what the problem was, but upon going back to meat I'm not having the cognitive trouble I was having without being on meat. Personally I'd rather not eat meat, but if I can't function.. The first time I tried this I ended up in the hospital and had I not gone off the diet I think I would have ended up there again. I had severe problems. Everyone would tell you that, it was very embarrassing for me. Here's my thoughts anyway
even though you get enough protein - you may not be getting all the amino acids you need?
you aren't getting enough fat? b12?
I dont' know. I don't know - but what good is it if all your labs are great but you can't function on it?
any ideas?

What do you usually eat when you are Raw?
Do you have support?

Wow, I've never heard of that. May I ask how long you went raw for, and yes, what you were eating? How far into Raw did you experience the problems, and when returning to a standard diet did the problems go away? Was it an immediate thing?

Raggaedog, I've tried two other times, as well, each for about a year. My labs were good but some other things weren't so great. My hair became very fragile and thin, my nails were so soft they were useless, I had digestive issues, and, yes, my thoughts were scattered and my normal drive gone. But I love eating this way and I'm back to try again.
Now, this may only apply to me, but you may be able to get something from it. I am 50, hypothyroid, with a very sluggish metabolism. Each time I've followed at raw diet, I was eating high fat, probably around 40-50%. When 50% of your daily 1,500 calories are taken up by olive oil, avocados, almonds and walnuts, as they frequently were, and maybe 20% in bananas and raw chocolate, there are bound to be some nutritional softfalls!
Like I said, none of this may be applicable, but just think about your daily calorie intake. Even at 2000 calories, it's easy for only 300 of those calories to come from a good, wide variety of fruits and greens. This may not be enough.
So, I'm trying again with reduced fat and more variety. I'm starting with a 30 day cleanse. I'm on day 21 now. I hope it helps any underlying issue. Then I will do it again a different way. I'm currently putting together lower fat recipes... I love recipes and am not really ready to do simple meals and salads, and I probably couldn't do 80-10-10. I'm looking for something I can live with... and thrive. Three could be a charm!
Good luck to you.

RD,
Also consider the other health issues, like hypothyroidism. We're not medical doctors here, so I tread lightly. But one issue is that you could have a low level system bacterial infection that is common in many of people experiencing health issues, including hypothryoidism.
I refer you to www.marshallprotocol.com and www.curemyth1.com.

Just wanted to say that I am too having problems with being tired all the time lately for the past few months trying to get into this raw food diet and get adjusted. I understand your concerns. :)

If you are "trying to get into raw food" but are also continually eating COOKED foods, you will basically be traumatizing your body by continually DETOXING but then by eating SAD again, you are basically confusing your system.
I have gone through long spells of low-energy and mental sluggishness while on RAW... I attribute it to the process my body is undergoing ridding itself of the 22 years of SAD food I ate before, and not the wondrous, living foods I am now feeding myself. :)
Also... two words: GREEN SMOOTHIES!!!! If you fear you're not getting the proper nutrients, or if you're low-energy, DRINK GREEN SMOOTHIES EVERY DAY!!!
I feel 110% better when I am drinking at LEAST one Green Smoothie daily!!!

I would say look into what kind of raw diet you are eating. There are many paths...if the one you were doing wasn't working for you, look into another. It definitely wasn't the raw food diet in general, it was likely your particular daily diet over time. You have to make adjustments on this diet, and what may work in the first days & weeks may not necessarily work in the following months.

I am surpised to hear about the low energy and mental fog. The only time I have problems with that is when I eat cooked food (it happens every time too). I may feel better temporarily eating cooked food, but then all of my other problems return and I get low energy. I had some chronic digestive tract problems before going raw. My digestive problems cleared up signficantly on raw. After I was raw for a few month I did a series of colonics which has helped too. I also learned that when you eat raw food that it takes more chewing than we are used to with cooked food. That is why green smoothies are so great, the veggies are already broken down into very easily digestible pieces (liquid). Greens are extremely important. Consider getting the book "Green For Life" by Victoria Boutenko.

I've never heard of this and don't think it is typical....if your really wanting to do it 100% I would do a consultation with Alissa Cohen. She has helped so many people and might have an answer for you!

Greeeeeen Smoooothies. Read Victoria Boutenko. I hope hope hope that you do. Green for Life is my favourite book by Victoria. You can pick it up at Amazon for about $8.
Add green smoothies to your diet, and see if that helps.

Usually, whenever I've heard of the types of symptoms you described, Reggaedog, it was when someone was doing a very restrictive type of raw food diet (low/no "this" or low/no "that") Very rarely have I ever heard any hae those types of issue when doing the raw diet according to how Alissa teaches it in her book and in any of her classes or postings, etc.
So, can you describe for us your typical raw food diet?

Most of the people that I've run into that have had problems with the raw diet are ones that either restrict too much of a certain type of food and/or don't keep their diet varied.
There are hundreds of raw foods out there that have a vast array of nutrients and micronutrients. If you're eating the same smoothie and salad every day, day in and day out, and only having a tiny amount of variety, your body is not going to thank you for it.
There is a whole rainbow of food out there. And you should be striving to have a rainbow of foods in your diet at least on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. That's the bare minimum. Daily would be optimal.
But we'd need to see more of what you were doing to really be of any help.

Hi ReggaeDog -
one thing I noticed about your post was raw vs. meat. It wasn't raw vs. cooked or vegan vs. meat eating.....maybe I am missing something. I bring this up because one can be cooked vegan and raw meat-eating (neither which is supported or discussed on this board), so that the baby doesn't need to be thrown out with the bathwater....
Just a couple of thoughts.

I have a thought... or two.
What else was happening in your life when you brought more raw into your diet? Any depression? Death(s)? Divorce? Loss of job?
I have had a lot of deaths in my circle this last while and I'm very foggy and unfocused... but it's not what I'm eating... it's what I'm dealing with. So I wonder if perhaps you look at what is happening when you incorporate more raw... that may assist you to find your answer.
And... if you weren't 100% raw... what else were you eating? That may assist you as well. I know how horrible I feel when I consume anything cooked/processed etc.

I haven't read any replies so sorry if i repeat with someone else.
One thing i know, most of everyone were raise and brought up with cook food. This is what we know and feel the most confortable with because this isn't new. So when thing goes wrong, it is very easy to lose faith and get back on our old habbit because this is what we know and feel comfortable with. I don't know if you read about Victoria Butenko. After about 7 years or raw food, she noticed that she would had problem with her teeth, and start aging again. Most people she asked about, all said that they have the same thing and just eat back some cook food. She would ask them, do you feel better and they all would say no. She finally went to study animal that had the closest DNA with human being and found that they were eating half percent of their diet was fruit and 3/4 was greens. She finally came up with green smoothies. Her health improved, the grey hair on her husband beard start to desapear, etc... If she wouldn't have faith and try to find out more, she would have never discover the green smoothie and would probably go back to cook food too.
You got result done saying that you physical was great when you were on raw food. This tell you that your body does very well with raw food.
Now here is the trick. We need to keep our mind and emotions in check. They are the one that make us sick and make us take decision that aren't the best for our body.
For Vitamine B12. Many meat eaters are reported to be B12 deficiency. This is because of mucus forming which prohibit the absorbtion of the chemical that a bacteria does which lead to create B12. Many has a reserve of B12 but this is important to get tested. I was B12 defeciency way before i became vegetarian. My iron level is finally normal since that i do raw food and greens. B12 deficiency lead to anemia.
Raw food is the natural diet for any living creature. We are the only one cooking. And of course we give cook food to our pet, which end up dealing with the same decease as the human.
Perhaps, what i would do for you is to consider to do small step. If you cannot do 100% raw, then so be it. Make room for the good stuff and eliminate gradually if not all the bad stuff. Maybe allow yourself to have steam vegetable, steam rice or bake potato. Pick something that you will allow yourself to do. Eat as much raw food you can and don't let your mind making you feel as a failure if you make exception some time. Focus on your accomplishment always.
I personally feel this is much easier to do 100% raw because, you will heal the discomfort or craving for cook food once and for all. This is like asking an alcoholic stopping drinking and he would allow himself to drink sometime, he will never cut tie with the craving with the alcohol. If you aren't a compulsive eater, then it might be ok to do a little bit of cook food but please only eat healthy food.
Make time to do something to reduce your stress level, such going for a walk, doing moderate exercise etc...
You can always supplement or research for supper food. If you want to do 100% raw food, have a plan and try to study more about raw food and then pick a date that you will commit.
Keep trying and don't give up, especially don't let your mind sabotaging your accomplishment ever.
Best wishes!

thank you so much for any help -
honestly I dont' want to eat meat/dairy - obviously I was missing something and not getting my nutrients somehow. I've improved a lot since I've gone off of it. But I really don't want to eat this way...... I felt like I didn't have a choice really. People have noticed I'm a lot calmer and more relaxed since I've been on meat also. I'm not sure why. ??
personally I'd rather eat fruit all day like I was before. I like that a lot better than eating cooked food anyway. So hopefully I can find some kind of a balance.
God Bless!
Rick
Here's the thing.... our bodies were not made for meat. In fact, meat does a lot of damage to the body. Things that are harmful = toxins. When you remove harmful substances from your daily routine, your body goes through a DEtox, removing the toxins.
Detox can manifest itself emotionally (which makes sense for meat, especially considering the hormones from the animals who lived pathetically disgusting lives). This is also because a person often eats when feeling angry, sad, bored etc. Negative emotions actually get stored deep within your cells, and come out if given the opportunity.
Detox can also manifest itself in acne, mucus, physical exhaustion (which is GOOD -- the body is using its energy to heal).
I'm not sure how necessary it is to see exactly what you're eating if you take the above into account.
That said, I had a hard time looking at your food in that format. But, I did notice a couple things... there did not seem to be a lot of greens but yet a TON of fruit. Greens are SO important for helping the body to cleanse and rebuild. If you haven't jumped on the green smoothie bandwagon, now is a good time to start. And, FYI, there is no such thing as "raw" sugar, even if it says so on the label. It's not part of the raw vegan lifestyle.
Also, the molasses, toasted cabbage, root beer, soy milk, cashew butter, protein powder, cooked rice... were these part of your diet when you were "raw"??

You do realize you've got some refined sugars in there, right?

as far as other stresses - I lost my wife 29 months ago and that's still very stressful for me - so it's very lonely for me and that's not very good for anybody.
I think there's some obvious benefits to a raw diet but for now I'm trying to research it more before trying it again.
God Bless

A wise choice. I never can understand people who make choices without thinking about the possible consequences, and it's obvious that you are approaching this intelligently. Dr. Doug Graham is one of the few out there that has done a fair deal of actual scientific work in looking at the raw diet. Also worth a check for the research factor would be the work of the Hippocrates Institute.

Wow --
Everybody's responses are so great !!!!
Just my 2-cents worth (sorry if someone already said it). You might wanna think about doing a bowel cleanse. Just a thought. Also, two more cents' worth: It can take YEARS to really detox the body. One way to speed it up is TONS of greens and green powder(s) -- a "good" one from an ethical company such as Alissa's. The body is designed to heal itself, but cannot do so until we stop eating what made us sick in the first place (processed food) and get the powerful nutition in, and cleanse the junk out (one way to do this is through a bowel, then liver and/or kidney cleanse).
Good luck and hang in there. Just one last word (as stated above): GREENS. Lots of them.

My father passed when I was only 3, and many years later my mom is finally healing from the pain after going raw last year. She bottled in the emotions in so many ways. From going raw and allowing herself to feel pain in the emotional detox, she has truly blossomed. It has been so difficult at times to see the pain she has gone through... but life and the enjoyment of life have taken on new meaning. I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't even understand having not gone through the pain myself. I hope you are able to do whatever you need to do in order to heal and to honor her memory in a way that does not take away your life too.
If I may make a food suggestion -- until you are able to get enough research in, you could add LARGE green smoothies into your diet to help prepare you while you are doing this research. It can only help...
If it's helpful I blogged about how to make a green smoothie here (http://readysethealthy.blogspot.com/2008/06/basic-green-smoothie.html)...

There is a say in raw food that people who eats meat or dairy get their nutriment second hand.
You need GREENS. There are also the super food such maca, chia seed, hemp seeds, etc..... do more research about that. If you still make room for the good stuff, then this is wonderful. I really recommend that you get the DVD a diet for all reason and a diet for a new America. Watch this and see if this make sense to you. I was very hook on diary and after seeing what happen with the animal fat in our body, it was it for me.
If you appear to be calmer, it could be that this is like a smoker who haven't have his/her cigarette for a while and then a sudden he/she gets a cigarette. The person will be calm.
If you really want to stick with the meat then at least buy only organic and free range. If you know a hunter, you can get the wild meat where it is filled with more nutriment. Seriously, you truly are getting your nutriment second hand from meat. Go visit perhaps David Wolf web, maybe you will find something that is missing. I like to take occasionally angstrom size minerals. I haven't had any since i do wheat grass.
If you really feel you need to stick to meat, just make sure this is clean and eat in moderation. You have no idea how hard this is on a body. Sadly because of the excess of energy that it takes to digest it, it compromise your youth.

I am so sorry for the lost of your wife, i have just read this.
Please don't be hard on yourself. If you cannot cope emotionally and meat is helping you then so be it.
Sending you love and praying for you to feel at peace!

Hey Rick, how's it going?
We're still here to support you. I can really sympathize with your struggles. When I first tired to go raw, I suffered from "information overload". I had read so many books on nutrition that had conflicting information that I was overwhelmed. I finally decided to do a very specific transition diet that allowed 15% cooked food (Hallelujah Acres), but it had to be vegan and whole foods. Soy products were not allowed. This was helpful at first, but the more I ate raw the more I found I wanted more raw foods. I eventually gave up on the plan and just went to listening to my body. I also read up on raw diets. My favorite authors are Paul Nison and Gabriel Cousens (in addition to Allissa)(do you have Alissa's book?). Paul offers a lot of practical advice on staying raw and Gabriel is great for more scientific information about vitamin B-12 ,etc.
The biggest thing I have discovered is to keep my meals simple and to eat lots of greens. I have heard a saying "if it comes in a bag, a box, a can or a bottle, don't eat it". In other words, get your food in the package nature provides. (I do but those pre-washed greens because I am always short of time, but you get my drift).
Hang in there.
