View Full Version : How often do you get sick?

I was curious to see how well us raw-foodists stand with being sick. So I made this little poll.

We'll call sickness any of the below:

Cold
Flu
Diarrhea
Pink eye
Infection (ex. containing pus)

Basically anything that attacks the immune system and produces an unpleasant symptom. I read that a typical cold or flu lasts on average about 7 days. To clear things up, anything over two days will be considered a sickness.

I don't get sick anymore.

When I rev up my lifestyle for more cleansing (introducing a water fast, juice feast, liquid feast, more oil pulling, hot yoga, etc.), I sometimes have some of those symptoms for about a day or less.

When I recently started going to hot yoga VERY frequently, I had diarrhea and a headache for a day or so and then got a pimple on both sides of my chin (pimples are VERY unusual for me on raw food) and was very tired for several days. I kept at it and got over the hump. It was a great next phase of healing.

But, literally, since going raw (Feb '07), I haven't been "sick" once. Pretty cool considering I would get sick at least once every couple months previously (cold, virus, something)...

My mum believed strongly in the powers of vitamins when I was young, and ironically, me and my bro were rarely sick. Of course, we did get the flu once or twice, and the common cold quite a few times, but nothing serious as far as I can remember. Although, that could also be accredited to the fresh air and exercise we got as farm kids...

I havn't been "sick" in over 6 years now. And i'm not always 100% raw all the time! On the rare chance I have felt something brewing on some of the occasions where I was eating less then optimal for a period of time, I quickly turned myself back in a more harmonious direction (read: went back RAW!) and in each case it never fully manifested and prolly lasted 2 days tops. It didn't make me feel unwell or slow me down in any way, I would just feel not quite as vibrant and animated and energetic and once or twice I felt like my throat was starting to get sore but then it went away later in the day and never actually did. That's pretty much it.

I'm sick right now...first time like this since starting raw (again) in January.
I've been really sick the past 5 days or so...yuck!!! All I can think of was that some cooked food I chomped down weakened my immune system. It's the only cooked thing I have had in several months. It was only veggies with bouillon cube, but still...

I don't get "sick"... I learned long ago to celebrate what my body does in the way of detox ~ even though I may not like the symptoms, I refuse to call them "sickness".

Been raw for 16 months and haven't been sick in that time. Felt a cold coming on a couple of times but went away within hours.

Even before raw I rarely got sick. Never got any of the childhood diseases or even colds very much. Last time I had a cold was 4 years ago. I've never had the flu. (knock on the keyboard).

The only thing I can think of is I had a huge amount of mucus come out of my lungs when I fasted and first went raw. It was due to the number of operations I'd had and the stuff they shoot into your lungs and anesthesia etc. It was pretty gross - rainbow mucus I remember calling it. 24 hours a day it would flow out of my nose and throat. I went through 5 or 6 boxes of tissues in a few days.

The beauty of raw. :)

I'm at a stage now where it is completly my choice if I get sick or stay sick. Sometimes in life I find that I can tax my body a bit much but when I feel the symptoms of a cold or flu I just go onto green juice and if its mucusy chesty infection type seriouse I add garlic and always no matter what loads of water and the synptoms go by the next day. I also do this with my daughters. They eat great but with the influence of other childrens birthday parties ect they can come down with symptoms and really we just come in with green juice and and keep them well hydrated and symptoms are gone the next day. We can't afford to get sick and we can't afford for our girls to get sick. I feel so empowered that our health is totally in our controll and we are completly responsible for it.

I should probably change my vote because the only reason that I get sick is that I have suffered from vertigo but otherwise I never get sick. I have voted once a year as a result of that.

I started on raw because I was chronically sick with colitis. I am better than I was, but I still have some problems and am not completely well.:(

For all the years I was raising 7 children I got almost a cold every year, usually in February. Now that they're gone and don't bring germs home, I rarely have a cold. I've only had the flu 2 or 3 times in my 67 year old life. For sure, I haven't had so much as a sniffle since going raw in Dec., 2006. My dh tries to give me a cold once or twice a year when he has them. I'm just not doing it! :)

I'm so happy to report that the only time I "get sick" is if I make some mistake with my diet. It is so wonderful to be able to count on my body being strong and healthy after being chronically sick for so many years. I am very grateful that I discovered raw!

Blessings,

I can't honestly remember the last time I was sick! And I have two kids and a hubby so I think Im doing pretty good! I am usually nursing everyone else because they catch colds and I am lucky enough to not even catch the cold from them!
