I work at a major healthcare hospital system. Our little newsletter came out with a section on flu shots. Management asked an infectious disease specialist to debunk reasons why people do not get flu shots. Reasons why included people think they don't work, they don't want the mercury, they never get sick, etc.

The thing that got me in an uproar was the following:

"I practice holistic health and my personal decision to not receive the flu shot is based on the self care I maintain."

"Expert" response: Healthy people get the flu and spread the flu, even if they don't have symptoms. This is a public health issue and sometimes public health has to trump personal choice.

As I said, ARRHHHHHH!!!!

Ironically, the very next section was the hospital offering an autism intervention program.

It is unbelievable. My dad came home from work last week (they eat dinner at my house most days) and as we were sitting around the dinner table he announced that he got a FREE flu shot! My jaw just about hit the table... he is not ignorant, and we have discussed vaccinations etc. many times. It was like he got a coupon for a free lunch or something! A FLU SHOT! So, one of his co-workers that knows me also, said he should call ME and let me know they were giving FREE flu shots. He said Oh, no way ... you could wave a million bucks in front of her face and she wouldn't get a flu shot. And YET, he still got the stinking flu shot! He never gets sick and as I said he eats at my house most evenings so his diet is WAY better than most (I don't take credit for what he eats for the rest of the day) and he still felt the need to get a flu shot because it was FREE. UGH. But I must admit that by the end of our conversation at the dinner table I was laughing so hard I couldn't breath, so at least I got a good laugh out of the FREE flu shot!

Blessings,
Heather

I don't know why that statement about Public Health has to trump personal choice got under my skin.

Maybe because if it keeps trumping it, pretty soon we won't have any personal choice.

I just can't believe how people buy into this stuff.

I got hassled last year about the flu shot, from my coworkers and bosses (all nurses), from my mom and friends (all nurses), and I survived where everyone else I know was so sick they were off work for months. Granted, I got strep throat (formerly my kryptonite) and was off a week, yet as the only one without the flu shot, I was the only one who had never taken any sick days besides those five missed.

Still, I get hassled.

I am proud of the nurses last year just a few hours away who refused to get the "mandatory" flu shot. The only downside is that if there is a breakout, they are forced to take time off, without pay, until it dies down.

Very unfair. I have also seen advertisements about free flu shots. I was intrigued, until I realized what it was they were doing!

Not only that but also, does getting a flu shot REALLY trump personal choice in favor of public health?
In my opinion, getting flu shots *might* prevent some people from getting the flu but at what cost? I think that most vaccinations actually make us sicker, maybe not with the flu in this particular year but with a lot of other mysterious things in the long-term.
The real result in my opinion: First you pay for the flu shot (even if you choose to not get it or get it "free" - the money to develop it and distribute it must come from somewhere - taxes, etc.). Later you get other diseases from the effects the flu shot ingredients had on your body. And then you get to pay to get those treated. Pharma industrie goldmine...

I read an article in a local paper the other day by Dr Donald Miller who is very much against flu vaccinations. He recommends taking Vit D instead or just getting more sun. I know this may raise eyebrows here about the supplements, but I found what he said encouraging in terms of a medical doctor siting the facts.

He says: "70% of medical doctors do not get a flu shot". So what does that tell you? I would laugh if it were funny.

I located a link to this article:

There is a reason children scream at the top of their lungs when getting vaccinated for anything. They know intuitively something is up.

i lied to my mom last yr., when she was bugging me to set an appt. for the family to go in & get flu shots. i told her the hosp. would send us snail mail, when the shots were ready. so the fam. never got it, & they never got the flu & didn't get as sick as compared to yrs., when they did get the shot.

I was telling DH about this. That's I'm supposed to get a shot because I could spread the virus even if I don't get sick. I thought his response was rather brilliantly logic (but then, I'm not real objective when it comes to the love of my life :))

Anyway, he said something like, so you're supposed to get a shot so you won't spread it to others? But if they've had the shot, why should they be in danger?

Kind of like if your neighbors on each side and in back of you build a fence, do you really need one? If everyone else gets a flu shot, won't they be safe anyway if you spread infection in the air?

I guess I'm supposed to get a shot to protect other people who don't get a shot????

My mother is 71 and has never had a flu shot. Not real sure for her reasons, but she chooses not to get it, and she has never had the flu. Of course, she does live out in the country from a little small town in TX. Less contact with others.

Did anyone see where NJ or NH was requiring all childredn in daycare and school to get a flu shot? It probably got a response they weren't ready for - some refusal.

I am getting so sick of hearing about these mandatory vaccinations - HPV in Texas, flu shots everywhere you turn... I'm so glad that many are refusing vaccinations. I have discovered two people in my life with children who have never vaccinated their children. One has a three year-old, the other an eight and ten year-old. Never any problems. It gives me the courage to not vaccinate my children (when they come around).

My coworker has a daughter who has severe psychotic episodes. They traced it to the "routine vaccinations" she was given as a child.

Granted, we don't have smallpox any longer, I think if there is going to be vaccination, do it for the epidemics, like smallpox was back in the day. (I'd rather the planet work to improve immunity and health at the foundation, but hey, small steps...) The flu is just moronic. It changes/evolves so quickly we can't keep up. The shots people are getting now are already outdated. So really, there is no point in getting the shot anyway.

Some day :) More and more are turning from vaccines. We'll be rid of them yet.

Same here. I'm tired of hearing about it. Where's the vaccination for idiots?

I've never gotten a flu shot and will never. AND if I had it to do over again, I would never have gotten my children their "shots". It's weird...
