I've been 100% raw for 57 days. I have lost 7 lbs, which is great, but it seems like I should be losing more- that's only .8 lbs a week. I cut down on nuts and avo, drink green smoothies every day, have been dehydrating uber veggie patties. And I have bowel movements 3-4 times per day (sorry if that's gross-but its important to mention :)) I haven't been very consistent with exercise, but I do hike/bike/gym at least 1-2 times per week. I am feeling so frustrated! I know people lose at different rates, but COME ON!
Has anyone experienced this S-L-O-W process?
In my desperation I have been looking into acai berries-which is the latest public craze for weight loss. Does anyone have any experiences to share with acai?
Thank You for any guidance/feedback!!!

Relax and let your body work its magic. Whether the weight comes off slowly or quickly, the important thing is that you are healing yourself, and living a pleasureable lifestyle that will keep the weight off forever. If you make raw torture and limit yourself too much, you'll be back to eating sad and gaining weight.
A weightloss of .5 to 1 pound per week is healthy and normal. Yes, some people will lose more quickly. But others will take their sweet time :) .
I do highly recommend exercise, not just for the weightloss, but for becoming toned and muscular, and for feeling absolutely great all the time.
To me, a healthy lifestyle is about feeling great, not just losing weight and looking great.
Congratulations on losing 7 pounds, BTW!

I am in the same boat as you smsaler! I have been high raw for 3.5 months and I have only lost 8 lbs! At first I was really depressed about it but now I don't "obsess" with the weight on the scale as I am eating good and excerising. I did just bump my excercise up to two times a day three days a week. I had a goal to lose weight by birthday (Nov 17th) but I realize now it won't be a reality according to the scale...but....I do feel and look better :D I just figure eventually the scale will catch up with me if I just keep eating right and excercising!
Just keep at it and don't obsess over the numbers on the scale!
Congrats on losing weight.

www.turbojam.com
Great DVD, support, etc. part of their membership program if you choose to need that additional community support.
Regardless their music and workouts rock. I have a few of their dvds for my investment into continued health and reversing the aging process which appears to be working in my turbokick box as I am probably the OLDEST but hey I don't care. I'm there because I want to be there and not because of any age thing. A thief store my lock Sunday night as I left it at gym with key so messed up my weight training last night without a lock and did turbo only then left for home. Tonight different story. Nothing will stop me tonight!
I do the www.turbokick.com that the gyms do, the "jam" is home version of the program I do the hr. at the gym however. It's a blast. Read how much people lost too. It's amazing. I can't say I am losing like crazy, but I love to eat and lots of fruit is more of my downfall. I can't stop at one or two and same with nuts. A little is a great thing, but going overboard is where the weight hangs on to me regardless of the rest of the great foods I eat.
I'm in for the long haul however and I am not a quick loser myself. Actually slow, but I never stop going!
Hang in. No one loses same way, but still lost is a process and so is gain. Gain happens too fast for me and not fast enough for the loss!!!!

thank you! I appreciate the support. I am having a rough week because I think I've put a few pounds back ON too, and my diet hasn't really changed. I am grateful for the rewards- glowing skin, more energy, better outlook on life (from the neck up, anyway). And yes, weight isn't everything, but I need to lose 50 more lbs to be at a healthy weight- and frankly, being this overweight is incredibly uncomfortable.
In any case- I'm committed to 100%- that won't change becuase I love the other benefits. I did start this as a lifestyle, not a "diet."

Thanks for the replies!!
CarolG- I so relate to that. Gaining is way too easy, losing is painful. I know I need to kick it up at the gym- it IS an integral part of loss for me. But I;m bombarded with these stories of weight literally falling off people... its a little disconcerting. i keep telling myself that it took me a while to gain the 60 lbs, so it will take a while to lose it- I just wish the books and websites showed a more realistic or balanced view of losing...
Trinut001- God- I only weigh myself once a month on my MDs scale. Any more than that and I think I'd be totally depressed. I can gauge though with clothes. Its hard not to obsess- but you're right- I need to let it go...

I, like you started this journey to lose weight ..and I have lost a little. But I try to pay attention to the way I feel and all the other amazing changes instead of what the scale says. I know that my body loves when i feed it well and makes me pay when I don't so that I what I try to focus on. I know you want to lose weight but let your body just experience this and think less of it like a diet. Otherwise, you'll be onto the next thing and the next thing and the next thing.
But if this helps, I do notice that I lose more when I move more so my personal goal every day is to move.. and some days let me tell you.. it's hard to get going. And there are days when I fail, but I keep on trying. Also, I try to eat every two hours (even if it's just a banana or apple). I know that sounds crazy but I lose more when I eat 6 small meals a day.

SM,
Don't measure your success by others. You are you and I am me. It's your journey. If you love gyms like I I'm there solo 6 days a week, but I do as many classes for turbo as I can otherwise it's eplitical also by myself. With class I may not know or talk to the people, but I'm having fun. I don't on ecliptial. I used to have a trainer and they are not all great. I found that out after several months of what I don't WANT anymore and what I do. Simply, I had a lazy trainer who gave me about 4 exercises per training and others give tons so I recently realized I was ripped off. However, I learned as he taught me but he was not excited to be there as the bar waiting brought in lots of cash in the ritzy country clubhouse so 10 years of cash crop is his guide and not my peanuts compared to the mega bucks I heard he makes. Oh well. Live and learn and no turning back but moving FORWARD.
Aleesha, reading this? Hope you are doing great moving forward too!! Aleesha = the juice feast queen of the queens.

I bet anything that you are losing in volume big time. How are your closings, pants, etc....fit on you now? Sometime we accumulate water and some other time, our body needs to do more urgent repair on different part of our body before losing the weight.
Beside not seeing those pound dropping, do you feel better in term of energy?? When i first when raw, i didn't loose much either, on my second time going, raw i lost big time but way too fast. This is good that you are losing the weight slowly, just trust me on this.
Just eat and don't worry about cutting back calories, really eat and don't starve yourself. Focus always on your health first, losing the weight will be side effect of your health.
You got so much great advice, don't get discourage for this is already working.

thanks raw angel mom- yes things did shift- I dropped a jean size- which for me is huge. I think my expectations got so pumped up to start with. A friend went raw and lost 20 lbs in 2 months. As I said above- I love the other benefits- my skin, hair and nails, energy and outlook. I;m just frustrated and scared that maybe I AM doing something wrong. But you all are right- I need to just trust the process...
thanks a lot for the supportive words. you are an angel mom indeed :)

I see a direct relationship between eating raw fats and weight loss. The more I tried to cut back on fats, the less weight I lost. I finally figured out that without the fats, I was eating such a low calorie diet that my body did the starvation mode thing and I didn't lose hardly at all. Once I began to use fats more freely, it picked up.
Although nuts are an integral part of my diet, I would say choose avocados, coconut, seeds, and seed butters and oils and avoid "filling up on" nuts. Anyway, that is my experience.

well, well I'm in the same boat although I am on raw 98% (occasional coffee with milk) since 3 month I have not lost a single pound so far, which is extremely frustrating the only reason why I keep going (and not run back to ww) is that i feeel really good on raw (skin, energy, sleep)

What does your typical day of food look like? I would have a tendency to agree with Emma-Liza about the fat and I even seem to remember someone sometime back (I think it was Zaphirah) saying she wasn't loosing and someone recommended she eat an avocado each day and she began loosing again. Our SAD brain often will want to do the opposite of what we should actually do such as cut out fat to loose weight. And when I don't feel I'm loosing fast enough I remind myself that my body may be healing something I didn't even know was there.

If it was me (and this is MY opinion) I would UP my fruit consumption (ESPECIALLY juicy fruit) and I would run the amount of food you typically eat through a calorie counter (just for reference, not as practice) because you may not be eating enough. But I would definitely UP my consumption of juicy fruit and see if that helps - I was always taught that fruit is the cleanser and vegetables are the builders. And of course EXERCISE ... we all know this and when we don't do it, we ask questions like "why do I have a hard time loosing weight" ;). Give it time and shift things around a bit, go back to Alissa's book and reread the section where she talks about tweaking your diet after you've been raw for a little while (I don't know that she uses those exact words but you get the idea).
Blessings,
Heather

I have always had a very hard time losing weight while raw. I cannot do the high fat and salt and lose weight. The only way it comes off for me is to count my calories on fitday.com. I stay between 1000-1200 per day and keep the fat below 20%. You would be amazed at how quickly the calories and fat add up and don't allow you to lose the weight. Exercise is also very important. I am exercising every day.

I'm going to recommend the same thing I do to everyone: colon hydrotherapy. You have no idea how much weight you might be carrying around in your intestine until it's cleaned out, and it will also help with absorption once your bowels are refined.

HI there! I found that incorporating the principles of a Ph balance diet with raw is proovin really successful in achieving my fast weight loss and health.
It is suggeseted by Dr Robert O' Young that things that create an acidic condition in the body such as certain foods, stress, negative thinking, toxins to name but a few lead to the body going into preservation mode by storing the acid in body fat leading to sustaining or increasing weight or buffering the acid by neutralising it with alkaline minerals found in the body such as calcium in the bones leading to osteoperosis.
Also suggested is to drink 1 Liter of water for every 40 pound of body weight and 30 pounds if your exercising.
I am acheiving awsome weight loss and heath by eating 100% raw, pretty much 100% alkaline diet (except for ACV on my vegetable salads) and great majority of Green Veg and 5 Liters of water per day. Once I have achieved my weight loss and health goals I think I will probably maintain the suggested 80% alkalinity to 20% acid without thinking about it too much.
There are alot of books written on the Ph balance for diet but one of my favourites authors is Dr Robert O'Young and his book Sick and Tired? Reclaim your inner terrain and The Ph Miracle for weight loss.
I was just supprised when I first got into this to discover what foods were alkaline and what were acid procucing. I ate alot of fruit and dates and nuts and when I stopped indulging in them and went for veggies and almonds, lemons, limes and grapefruit the weight just started falling off.
Wishing you every success!! I'ts just about enjoying the path and finding what is good for you and your body.

I plugged your typical day into fitday.com and you consumed 2500 calories with 69% fat. You should consume a lot less calories and fat if you want to lose weight. One coconut has 1400 calories alone! A typical rule of thumb for how many calories to consume to lose weight is if you want to weigh 130lbs you should consume 1300 calories, 120lbs-1200calories, etc.

I could be wrong, but it was my understanding that young coconut were not as calorie dense as mature coconut.
I found it ... Here's a link they say that a young coconut has 140 calories - a HUGE difference when you are looking at calorie content. I thought I had seen a post awhile ago by raweater talking about this.

holy mac! 1 coconut has 1400 calories?!!! NO WAY! whether it's 1400 or 140, there ya go, if anyone needs fat, just go for the coconut. delicious, delicious... just delicious!
for losing weight, i really lean towards cleansing. it's like getting an oil/filter change for your car. sure. you can add in more oil(good oil) to increase the fluid levels to max, it's less work, faster & easier, but it's not like letting all that old oil drain out and replacing it with new oil. your car will last longer, if you keep doing the maintenance it needs.
it's the same way with your body. clean the junk out. i truly do believe that the good living foods you eat and healthy exercise you do will reflect more on your body once it's gone through some major cleanses, if you've had a history of bad eating, severe stress, etc....
personally, with every cleanse i do, i just don't budge a certain weight each time. at 140, i can eat like a pig, & i wouldn't budge that weight. at 135, same story. now i'm at 130, & every time i look at the scale, i can't help but chuckle, b/c it's just not budging beyond 130. i only eat fruits & veggies. mostly fruits. i don't eat nuts, avocados, seeds (wait! i eat coconut! & I'm not sure what it classifies as ) or sprouts. i don't like the taste of most, & i just haven't sprouted before. :o
it seems everyone has different experiences with what works for them. you've received tons of helpful strategies that everyone has personally experienced. try one different thing at a time. maybe adding more fat? try that and see if you get improvements. restricting calories? you can try that, too. maybe try a different strategy every month. :p you'll get there! :)

Great suggestions! I've tried some of these- I did a round of colonics before I went raw. I've done food combining. Food combining did nothing. The colonics didn't help me lose weight- but I felt awesome afterwards and much more connected to how what I eat impacts my body. When I first went 100%I was eating much more fat- nuts, raw chocolate bars, avocados etc... Perhaps its true-those of you who commented on the "eat more, lose more" philosophy. or maybe its just eat more often?
For ex, yesterday I ate
Green smoothie- tons of kale, grapes, apple, gogi berries, hemp powder, lemon
2 clementines
a broccoli patty on pizza bread with sprouts and ginger/tahini dressing
salad of mung beans, cabbage, snap peas, pepper, ginger/tahini dressing
1 slice of chocolate/almond butter pie
water, water, water
hehe. gal. let us know what works for ya after a while. :) i haven't reached my GW yet either, although i don't even know what my GW is. i'm just hoping to feel it, when i get there. :p
anyway, *high five!* girl. keep trucking! :)

I too have experienced s l o w weight loss. What's worse, I was on a business trip and ate some cooked food for a week and I gained five pounds. I lost a couple since then. Before that my loss was an average of 1.25 pounds a week. It was very slow the first month and then it started coming off. I started excercising more and also started juice fasting one - two days a week. The fasting seems to really help. I don't find that limiting avocados has any effect on my weight loss. In fact, it seems to help. Avos are high in fiber and nutirients. I didn't consciously cut down on nuts, but I have found that I don't want too many. I use mostly sunflower seeds and a small amount of almond butter. I also have some success when adding spices to my food like cayanne pepper and ginger. They are supposed to raise the metabolism. I am pretty sure I have an extremely low metabolism as I am cold all the time. (I live in Arizona and keep my house at 80-82 degrees during the hot season and I am comfortable). I am currently tying to build some muscle to raise my metabolism, which partly accounts for some of my weight gain.

Eating Raw does amazing things for your health...but to lose weight it is calories in and calories out period..you admitted that your exercise has slacked...you have to step it up...your metabolism is slowing down you have to move more than you imagine to see a significant change...I also have alot of weight to lose..I exercise 6days a week I get my heartrate up between 70-90% and I'm seeing amazing results with inches and weightloss..I don't eat alot of nuts but I do eat half an avocado everyday...the bottom line is that you have to move, sweat and push your body to see a significant change...being 50+ pounds overweight we dont have the luxury of just doing yoga or strolling around the neighborhood....just my two cents

Yep, totally understand where you are coming from! I am a SLOW loser, too. But this year I did manage to lose 30 lbs (and am still amazed by it, really). How? Different from any expectations I had - that's for sure. I always lived with the assumption that I had to be some kind of work out Nazi at the gym sweating and running around until I dropped....and that I had to watch everything I put in my mouth (raw or not). Truth is, it wasn't that dramatic. I had it all built up in my mind and it was a personal roadblock for sure.
So, what I did was the following - focused on a broader picture:
1. Made changes in my life to get enough sleep every night (7-8 hrs) - underrated but important!
2. Made changes in my life and mindset to reduce stress or find ways to more effectively deal with the stresses I couldn't eliminate. This consisted of physical changes in my environment/work schedule and tapping into positive thinking people, books, websites to help my journey. This was not so much a major focus as 'support' for the following two things.
3. I stopped obsessing over what I ate and just ate mostly raw what I felt like and when. The times I wasn't absolutely 'raw' I made very conscious choices to eat whole, unprocessed foods that were mostly vegan. Was I hungry on occasion? Sure. For me having a tummy growl once in awhile was a new experience and I learned to live with it. I ate regularly though - at least 3 meals a day...just smaller and healthier than in the past.
4. THE BIG ONE - this is the single most important factor in my weight loss and I'm 100% sure of it. Walking. That's it.....so simple it still amazes me. I walked every day, or at minimum 6 times a week and I walked anywhere from 3-7 miles a day. Not always all at once either! Sometime 3-4 mi in the morning and 3 miles in the evening. If you think that's far....it's really not as bad as it sounds. At a moderate to brisk pace (and of course this will vary by person, but for me it worked out this way) - walk 30 minutes in any direction from your house then turn around. Voile 1 hour = 3 miles. I checked this out with my car and lo and behold it was spot on accurate!
And, I did some basic weight training with hand weights and an exercise ball to tone up, too.
Here's the rub.......when I first started I didn't lose ANY weight. In fact in the 2nd week I actually gained 5 lbs!!! I wanted to cry and couldn't figure out what happened. I just stayed the course. Another week went by and nothing. Then in the middle of the 3rd week.....bam I dropped the 5 lbs. And so it went from there in cycles of about 3 weeks. Nothing, then a 3-5 lb loss and I had this zigzag pattern going. I guess everyone is different.
Where I'm at now - I fell off the wagon with my walking discipline for a few months (#2 changed a lot for me and I'm still figuring this out) and you know what happened to my weight? Flatline. No gain no loss. 3 months of flatline. So the good news here is that I can maintain the loss! But....I still have a ways to go to get to my goal.
So, I'm back doing exercise again and refocusing on raw. I'm in the middle of week 2 and guess what? Yep, I gained 5 lbs. Jeezzz..... like a bad rerun. But I'm keeping steady with the faith that around week 3 I'll get my drop again and off we go!
I hope that helps. I know it's very different for us all in how things work, but the point I wanted to make is - DON'T GIVE UP! And, also that consistency of exercise is way more important than the 'showiness' of it. Simple walking and weight training is great when you're starting out!
Have an excellent day! :)

Wow Greenday, that sounds like me. I always gain a couple of pounds before my weight drops. One thing I forgot to say is that it is important to not obsess over what the scale says, pay attention to the way your clothes fit and measurement etc. The scale can be misleading. Some people even put it away. I admit that I weigh nearly every day, but it is kind of a ritual like brushing my teeth. I mostly just like to see if there is a trend, one direction or the other. (if it is too much in the wrong direction, then I re-think what I am doing).

In addition to what others have said here(exercise, calories in and out, etc.), one's age and reproductive status can have something to do with it too. There are many women who are approaching menopause, going through the transition, and post-menopause who find themselves not releasing weight despite a very good diet and fitness program, or worse yet, find themselves gaining MORE fat weight, even with increased solid exercise and a much better diet. The underlying reason in these types of cases is hormonal imbalance which negatively affects blood sugar use and cholesterol and for some people this is worse than for others due to individual body chemistry. When one's blood sugar use goes out of whack as in being insulin-resistant, you will not release weight unless you are way stricter than you want to be, ever, or you address the underlying hormonal imbalance. But definitely being on a well-constructed raw eating plan helps. People like Dr. Gabriel Cousens are doing some important work in terms of reversing diabetes with raw food diets. Reason I know this is because I recently found out that I was slightly insulin-resistant(and with elevated cholesterol), 11 years post-menopause, despite being of normal weight(but would like to get rid of more body fat to be truly healthily lean), having an excellent diet and been exercising consistently for 35 years. Prior to menopause I never had blood sugar or cholesterol issues. But I hadn't had any blood measurements for many years, so it might well be possible that my numbers might have been somewhat worse prior to me going pre-dominantly raw last February. Time will tell anyway. But I have gotten onto a simple Chinese herbal formula that addresses menopause, blood sugar issues and cholesterol in one fell swoop. In just 10 days, a couple of pounds fell off me just like that with no further change in diet, plus my pants loosened up some. I didn't really release ANY weight until after 3 months raw, through a detox illness, and then 3-4 pounds dropped off just like that. So I'm confident that I am on the right track here as far as what I have going on. But for every body it's different. Stay the raw course, and do take a look at how different foods affect you too. Some of us, especially older ones have to be a bit stricter than younger ones in just how much and what type of raw food to eat to help release unwanted weight. And of course there's no good fat loss program out there that doesn't include meaningful, challenging exercise. Too many nuts can be a culprit in halting weight loss for some people, while switching to avocadoes and coconut oil can be the trick to getting it going again, or some people do well with a lower-fatm higher-fruit approach. As they say over on another board that I frequent, YMMV.
Hope this helps - we're works in progress here!

Oh and another eye opener for me was when this past summer I bought one of those bodybuggs as seen on the tv show the Biggest loser...after wearing it for three months I was able to see how many calories I used working out and moving around throughout the day..I was shocked to see that we really dont burn as many calories as we think we do...in order to burn the calories I wanted I basically had to be moving all day,lol...I was on a food plan then that wasnt raw...I will be 44 next week so that whole metabolism slowly thing is a factor...but I'm choosing not to embrace that..I have decided that I can and will change my body.

SM,
I too am going through the menopause thing, am 52. Started raw about 5 months ago. I was really good with my raw diet and lost about 12 pounds. then went to about 80-90% raw and I hit a brick wall. These last 3 weeks, am back to 100% raw and so far nothing has happened..... I am having some of the menopause symptoms and hope that being 100% raw will help, but I don't think that I am going to lose weight very easily. When I hit 40, it's like I had no metabolism left????!!!???? I wondered where in the ?? did it go? I am hoping that the longer I am on raw, the better it will be. I am also trying to get back into walking hills 45-60 minutes several days a week and then upping the exercise. I think that exercise is also the key.

I would up the exercise. Movement is the answer. Then again I am a personal trainer by profession so of course I would say that. Remember Muscle Burns Fat!!! You need to build some muscle (not become a body builder). I think that would help tremendously.
But anyway.. how much do you weigh now? I saw you are looking to lose 50 more pounds. But how tall are you? I mean are you even overweight? I just want to make sure you don't have unrealistic expectations. If you aren't overweight you aren't going to see dramatic weight loss because your body doesn't have the extra weight to loss. I am just curious.

thanks raw angel mom- yes things did shift- I dropped a jean size- which for me is huge.
Oh don't you worry. Something in me tells me that you are a gorgeous woman no matter what you think about your body. You are cute now and not until but now. Just relax and let your body do its job. Now that you are doing some wonderful choice for your body, the rest will take place. The fun thing, is that the result are now. May i suggest to hide that scale for a little while. Remember, your body needs to do the important stuff to keep you young, healthy and full of energy first. On my second round i lost my weight way too fast and i look like i was beat up and older. Thank to goodness, everything got back to normal. Just enjoy the everyday miracle from your body. You will just be amazed all the time. Me i had a c-section and the scar desapeared, i barely have a little line almost invisible. So amazing. I had a cyst and was cut at the same place years ago in my twenties and i had that massive scar and now, i got cut again for that c-section and the scar is almost invisible. You are on the right path and just keep the faith. Be grateful now and don't worry about the weight, this is so much fun to watch our body transforming month after month. Take picture and save it.
