My relatives all think I'm a little crazy for this raw food stuff, or so I thought. My cousin (in her early 30s with lots of allergies) and my aunt (in her mid 50s and ALWAYS going to the doctor for this and that) surprised me today with a visit to Budapest. My aunt's boyfriend had to be here for a meeting, so they decided to come say hello.

I did not know they were coming to my place until they called me this morning and then 5 minutes later showed up at my door!! I got up and threw on some clothes, didn't have much food to share because I've already cleaned out (i.e. eaten!) my cracker etc. supply and was going to be going to the BIO ABC today for some fresh "snacky" stuff like apples. It was really not good timing!

I served them some peppermint tea and threw together some raisins, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds with a touch of sea salt. Good enough.

They were here for a couple hours when I started to get hungry and asked if they minded me making a quick smoothie. I still had some garden sorrel and frozen bananas. They were curious and wanted to try just a sip. You should have seen the looks on their faces. They were so surprised that it tasted good!!! :) (Score #1!)

We went out to lunch and for tea when my aunt's boyfriend was finished with his meeting. They had greasy meat, and I managed to get a raw but very simple cabbage and tomato salad at the gyros place (Score #2!).

Next at the tea/coffee place, they were all drinking coffee, but tired and grumpy... but I was happy and energetic. My cousin commented on it. She said she thought it might be because I was having all the greens! (Score #3!)

Next they came back to my apartment to pick up their things before heading off... While my cousin was in the WC, my aunt noticed my Victoria Boutenko book in Hungarian... she started looking through it. She looked so curious. I told her to just take it because it takes me too long to read in Hungarian anyways, and she was thrilled!!! She told my cousin when she came out of the WC that "she wants to learn more about this raw food thing." (Score #4!)

Soooo wonderful! Even if they just are more open to adding more fruits and veggies, green smoothies, etc. into their lives, that will be so thrilling for me. I just love sharing this raw food goodness with people! I'm so happy to have had an opportunity to plant more little seeds. :D

Ah, and they were shocked that I haven't yet turned on the heat in the apartment and was wearing a light dress today but wasn't cold. My body has gotten so good at staying warm or cool or whatever is necessary in the climate. Very cool. Aren't the thin vegans supposed to be the cold ones? Isn't that the purpose of all the heavy food? Mmmmm hmmmmm. Yup. I love raw.

That is sooo cool Eva! :D My family doesn't understand (literally they aren't really sure what the heck I've been eating.. I don't think they grasp the concept yet) and it's really good to know that by sticking to this, there might be a glimmer of hope, lol..

Hi Eva! *high five!* What was the quote... be the change you wish to see? The best way to tell people about things is definitely showing them!!! You go, girl!!!!

Maybe -- I think for me it's all about circulation and keeping the blood moving! Raw food sure helps with that (or at least does no harm). :)

pixelkatt -- Yes! There must be some hope. I think it's just a matter of time -- or not. Either way (as oai pointed out), being the "change you wish to see" is a darn good start! :)

I agree.. This is the first time in a long long time that I actually feel hope for even myself.. if it spreads after that, that's just a bonus. :)

I didn't even think about that -- but I guess that the "gently sharing" thing works! I've been extra cautious about the "gentle" part because I am half Hungarian, but having been raised in the US, I have not wanted my differences to be like forcing my "culture" on my Hungarian relatives... even though it's not really "American culture" to have my exact beliefs. But they don't know that!

Great news Eva! Sadly, some people in my family have friends that are doctors (not surprisingly, they are in the worst health of all with a long list of diseases: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, psoriasis, obesity, etc.) and think I'm absolutely crazy, see the thread I started about wanting to write about this in my recipe book.

Luckily, most of my friends see the sense in it and several of them have gone 50-100% raw.

I think one the the strongest motivators to eating raw is seeing how corrupt and deadly the health care system is, in fact I've decided to add a few pages about the corruption in health care which really shows the importance of taking care of your health, as many medical treatments are proven to accelerate death even when compared to no treatment at all:
-Blood pressure pills actually increase heart attacks by 60%
-Cholesterol drugs increase heart attacks by 10% and cause cancer, alzheimers and other diseases
-Chemotherapy was never proven to extend life and according to some doctor's independant studies actually accelerate death by up to 4 times in some cases compared to no treatment at all, and wider studies have shown cancer patients live about the same amount of time whether treated or not at all
-Avandia, a diabetes drug, kills 35,000 patients a year when properly prescribed and taken, those 35,000 patients per year would still be alive if they had cured their diabetes with diet changes

And conventional medicine as a whole is the #1 cause of death killing 10,738 to 42,955 patients per day, that’s the equivalent of the September 11th attacks occurring 4 to 16 times every day

I have a few pages of facts like this at the begining of my book which should motivate people to take care of their health, as most people mistakingly think modern medical treatments are based on science when they really have no science behind them, just marketing.

I hope they take to it and run (heal) with it!

I love Hungary. We lived in Austria (2000-03) and would visit some friends there in Budapest. I have a few things from there as well, pottery (sarospatak)
and some crystal. How long are you going to live there?
congrats!

Gosh, I hope so too! Thank you for your comments.

I'm getting creative with web design these days in my spare time. One web site's sole purpose is to share info and recipes about raw food. My cousin is translating it to Hungarian for me!!! Soooo, she'll be constantly barraged with more info about raw. Mwuhahahaha.

Funny huh? I planned that. Things are quite tough here with the job market, so it's sort of like a contractor/project situation. Win-win-win-win. :)

And there are so few raw food resources in Hungarian. :(

And I'm just here until the end of the year, and even of that I will be around London for a week it looks like. I have not made it to Austria yet!!! I really really wanted to go but have just not made it. I would love to take the boat up the Danube and back. :)

There is a CHANCE that I will go to Vienna just for the weekend of the 27th and 28th ... but I do have quite the busy schedule, so we'll see. :) I will look for your advice if I do go!

As I was told last week by Susan from RawVeganSource...."Raw food is getting chic." It's a movement that is sweeping the globe. Your such a cool ambassador for the raw lifestyle.
