Ok, here's a question. Background: I am not totally raw, I am raw until dinner when I have homemade soup, salad, and homemade bread, or something similar. For example today I had one GS (about 15 oz), one salad, for dinner 1/2 c organic rice pilaf plus dal, some homemade bread, then for a snack before bed, another smoothie (1 frozen banana, 1 c. water, some carob, handful spinach, coconut). I have been vegetarian for 7 years.
When I eat high raw, I have about 5 bms a day. This slows down to about 2-3 if I add more cooked. This week brought extra stress (my grandma passed away unexpectedly) and now for two days I have diarrhea. I tried eating canned pumpkin yesterday (a remedy I use for diarrhea or loose bowels for the dogs) and couldn't choke much down (icky tasting, even with the addition of spices).
I'm not sure what to do. I could continue on, but especially these last two days, the frequency is distressing. Has anyone experienced this? I've been eating this way for about 7 weeks.
I'm starting a raw program (from another online site) next week that is 30 days in duration, starting with a 24 hr water fast. I am planning to get off the cooked for 30 days. This might make a difference. I'm not sure.
Any advice, especially from personal experience, is desired. Thanks!

Bananas are good for diarrhea. So is weak black tea. I've also read that grated raw carrot is good. Why grated? I don't know. I don't bother to grate mine. I just chew it up really well.

I've heard that coconut macaroons will help with diarrhea. I'm sure they're not raw, but I've heard that they work.

I just saw some posts that have raw coconut macaroons in them. Look under "today's posts". Hope this helps!!:)

I think that in this case, you need to go to the root cause of the problem (stress) rather than seeking relief through food. We are much more than just our physical bodies. Do what helps you relax. Think positive thoughts. Release/express the sadness you are going through.

Thanks all. I am also concerned about the number (5!). I'm sure the diarrhea will slow down, but the total movements is still quite high, it seems.

Hey guys,
I am actually having the same problem. I have had liquid stools since starting the raw food diet. It concerns me because I already have Crohn's Disease, which gives me a lack of bowel control, and I'm scared that my condition is getting worse, not getting better. Can anything suggest anything to help slow me down? I eat bananas and carrots all the time...

I took extra probiotics, including Garden of Eden, then ate some cooked food. Yes, I know that maybe I am slowing the process of going all raw, but right now I just need to be able to eat and keep stuff down. I believe in listening to my body and emotions, and there's been too much craziness this last week for me to worry about slowing down my transition. I love veggies and fruit, but they ain't sticking, so to speak.
The carrot sticks I ate at 4 pm were out by 5... :(
If it doesn't settle in the next few days, I'll take pepto bismol or something.

If you start getting pain and your burps are smelling like raw eggs. Then you might have yourself some giardia (beaver fever). I have read that Mango kills it. Mine got so bad I had to go to the doctor.

I may get whacked for saying this but stop eating cooked food. Why are you going back and forth? Seems like you do great when you're high raw. If you do have to keep eating cooked for dinner, eliminate the bread. It's probably the yeast and flour and grains that are slowing down your digestion and reeking havoc in your colon. You are confusing your body.

I have had giardia before, I don't think I have it now. The reason I am eating cooked at night is that I am transitioning. I am on a medical protocol and in a clinical trial and was told not to eat all raw. While it is too complicated to go into here, I simply cannot go all raw now based on the medical protocol and my commitment to that. The bread that I eat is homemade sour dough, has no yeast in it.
Today I am better. Actually, the numerous bms started when I added green smoothies. Up to then I was two, maybe three. Now five or more? What I did to stop the diarrhea was to drink tea that had slippery bark elm, chamomile and marshmallow root. Drank it last night before bed and normal today.
I would never whack anyone on the board! I simply am caught between two worlds right now.

Since you have to eat cooked food for you clinical trial, you might try doing more brown rice instead of bread. Sometimes the gluten in the wheat can can digestive problems. Also, keep in mind that since you are doing high raw, you might be experiencing some detox symptoms. Make sure you are chewing your food well too. Undigested food can irritate the colon and cause diareaha (sp?).

sour dough bread has the naturally occurring yeast that was in your starter, plus whatever is in your environment. that is what makes the flour, etc. have bubbles, get sour, and rise.

Thanks all. I have been doing good for a couple of days (I did do all raw yesterday) and today the evil diarrhea is back a little, so I'm going to make my tea again..

maybe im stating the obvious, but any chance whatever medical protocol youre on, if youre taking a drug, could be interfering with your body? just a thought. depends on what youre on, i guess. i had a friend in college that got paid for a summer to test a drug that made you have to pee.... im sure that messed with his system...

Hi, I'm new to raw.... eating clean... no processed foods, no dairy... occasional egg whites... cutting fish from like 6X a week to 2.
just got a vitamix.. ohhh love it!!
problem, since I've been adding more and more fresh raw whole fruits and veggies and raw smoothies... fiber has gone to 42 - 50+ a day. over about 6 weeks.
I notice now that I do go more often.. like 5X a day,, but they are much smaller and I have to PUSH. Is this bad? shouldnt it be easier since I'm all natural and tons of fresh fruit/veg???
thanks so much!!!

I don't know if should be easier cyclegrl. I do know that keeping the animal products in yor diet could make it more "funkified" as your body probably will try to shove those products out. You are probably in a detox phase too, but like me when not all raw, your body is kinda fighting itself.
I've been successfully staying raw all day several days a week and with a reduction of stress, loss the diarrhea part.
