So can someone tell me the difference between the really expensive olives that you buy from the raw food sites and the bottled Kalamata olives I see at the health food store. Alissa says usually things that come in a can are not raw but what about these bottled olives. I love olives and that is one thing that I miss.....and for those of you who have bought the expensive raw ones, are they really worth it. I keep wanting to buy them but seem to always put them back on the shelf and go and buy 3 or 4 things that equal the cost of what one jar of olives would have been.

I bought raw olives online twice. First time one jar arrived leaking. The other had a very loose top on it. I was afraid to eat them and threw them out. The next time they looked and tasted exactly like Kalamata olives which made me think they were not raw at all.

I have bought the jars online and they were so salty that I could not eat them. I have also bought the cheaper vacuum packed ones on line but they seem to go mouldy and they are not very nice.

I recently made the trek to RawVeganSource in Redmond. They have a good variety of olives. I got 4 kinds. The Moroccan are $9.19 for a 13oz jar, they are wet but not in brine. The Green Sicilians are $15.79 for a 16oz jar, in brine. It is a lot of money, but I only use 5-7 at a time and not everyday. I also got sun-dried and oil cured olives in 8oz bags, $4.99 and $6.99. Very musty and salty, but I like them. Store in the fridge after opening. Soaking in water, changing the water a few times, will take away some the saltiness and musty flavor. These olives all say raw and/or processed without heat. There are no additives like sodium phosphate or citric acid. They are worth it!

Do raw taste anything like the conventional kinds?

It's been my experience that the raw green olives in brine taste the same as conventional green olives. The black olives are totally different, especially if they are sun-dried.
