View Full Version : Digestion Rates of Fruit

Just had a thought and was curious to see what other people think.
I understand that we shouldn't eat at least 2 hours before bed due to enabling our bodies to digest dinner because this function slows down when we sleep. However some fruits apparently digest quite quickly so depending on what you have eaten earlier on is it ok to eat fruits such as watermelon say half an hour before bed due to its quick digestion rates?

Well, I thought 15 or so was how long it took for the watermelon to empty out of your stomach. But, that doesn't mean it's digested yet.
I suppose that, if you're hungry before bedtime and must eat something, this would be the thing to eat.

hm... I actually TRY to eat watermelon before bed... I like how it gives me water so I'm not thirsty, I'm not hungry, I get to feel full before bed and its gone during the night....then I feel refreshed in the morning. But I only eat it after all other foods have been digested, I dont want to mix. I eat watermelon because it has the most water, I wouldnt eat an apple or a banana....only watermelon or water.

I know it's partially comfort and habit, but I have an apple or two or an apple and a pear about an hour before bed..

Good Morning Peter!!!!!!!!!
Miso Soup is the breakfast food of Japan. The posh fad thing now is to have it before Sushi ( which means vinegared which refers to the traditional Su-meshi or seasoned rice, not raw fish that is Sashimi) Had to put that sorry.Think of it as a fermented paste (there are several combinations and some are not raw)
Miso is one of the oldest Japenese ingredients, there is evidence of recipes from the 12th century and that it is related to an ancient seasoning called hishio. TMI??????????????????? :D
This is a recipe I made up it may help you
I soak seaweed ex; wakame
(I have one of those hand choppers from kitchen aid for $14 you can find other brands for less. With this I chop carrots, green onions)
In a bowl add water , dash of Tamari or BraggsAmino , and 1 tsp of Miso blend w/whisk then add vegtables & drained seaweed And ENJOY ;)

GREAT post dawn -lol,I hate it when ppl ASS-U-ME that sushi is "raw fish" -""eeewww""
anyways ,I make a dashi( flavored stock) first ,by heating water on low in a sauce pan with a jullianed shitake mushrooms and kombu,if you use this remove it after -its for FLAVOR (or any other seaweed) ,not too hot , under 118 and I stir/wait 5 min. ,then add 1 1/2 T of miso paste (try the chickpea miso)and stir till its mixed in ,then I add chopped green onion, sesame seeds, nori or more seaweed ......
you can buy miso at most H.F.S. or asian markets ,make sure it is in the freezer section (that means its NOT pasturized)
here are some GREAT brands..

also ,sometimes I just go the LAZY route ,and heat the water with the paste ,make the broth and add sliced ginger and green onions -or just plain miso ,but go for the darker paste if you do that (it has more flavor)

Miso Broth? Whats the ingredients, please? aka How can I make it :DM - I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but I thought you'd want to know that miso is not raw, though it is fermented so it's live. And, if you're considering eating miso made from soybeans (the vast majority), you might want to know about how truly hideous soy is for your health.
(Yes, I know this goes against "popular wisdom" which has been created largely by misinformation from the huge corporations that have succeeding, through multi-million $$ advertising campaigns, in getting us all to believe that soy is a health food. If anyone is outraged by what I've said here, but is open to learning about this, there's plenty of information to support this counter-culture idea. I can give you websites or books or just the low down.)
