I've never tasted Durian, but my local Superstore is carrying three GIANT ones right now for $1.29/lb CND. Tomorrow, depending on the prize, I may have to buy one.
First, I would like to know a few things. What does Durian taste like? Is this a good price, in your opinion? Are there any things I should keep in mind in choosing as well as preparing raw Durian? Are there any fool-proof incredible phenomenal off the wall recipes you'd recommend for a Durian virgin?
Thanks for your time! Much love from the Crazy Healer Lady!

I bought a durian a few years ago. It smelled so bad I thought it was rotten and threw it out. I would like to try it again, but not at $8 per pound. If you can get it for $1.29lb, go for it!

$8 pound yikes. Asian market is my hot spot for fresh. Can freeze it then, cut it while frozen and eat what you wish. Delish. Get past the rotten smell and you will love it. Most either love it or hate it. I find "love" in it.
I'm thinking $1.29 pound. I would look for the splitting ones where you may see a peak of flesh as super ripe I am thinking.
See a youtube.com on durian.

carolg, I checked out your links. Thanks. I'll have to take another look. I saw it at Uwajimaya, wonder if it was mis-marked or I misunderstood. Maybe that was the price for each, not per pound.

Always glad to share.
I bet it was for the entire durian price for $8. You'll love the ice cream link below using durian.

If i were you..... i would buy the smallest durian you can find and try it before you buy a big one. if you have not tasted it you are in for a big suprize. its like eating old gym socks..... AT FIRST!
but then as you get into it.... you can taste how good it really is.
but then... maybe you will hate it. some people i know just GAG when they try it....and cant manage to get use to it.
a good ripe durian can clear a room. there is a reason they are not allowed in alot of places in SE asia LOL.
anyway..... find a small one and then eat the rich creamy pods in the fruit's chambers. its the same idea as a walnut. i like to save the seeds and see if i can sprout them.
good luck to you....hope you like it. durian is a real adventure.

ah the durian adventure......i saw this magical fruit on a food show and decided i needed to try it - not to mention all the raw foodies who seem to love it....
i bought one a few months ago and while running errands and placed it in the back seat, when i returned to my car, i literally gagged at the smell. but it was sooooooo awful that it was hysterically funny.
i brought it home and my husband and i tried it. the texture was gorgeous - i wish i could get past the smell that many describe as a cross between old wet gym socks and rotting fish. apparently places in asia fine you if you bring one into a hotel....

I've had fresh-off-the-tree durian in Asia.
It smells like sweaty gym clothes. I actually don't mind the smell so much. It is a plant-smell, not a rotting flesh type smell, so it really doesn't bother me.
To me, the taste is like a cross between onion and banana.
I like the creaminess of durian, but I don't like the fibers that run through it. I prefer blended durian shakes to eating a durian (because of the stringy, celery-like fibers).
I think I am the only person on the planet who is ambivalent towards durian. I don't love it, don't hate it.
Eating durian makes you feel dreamy and ecstatic if you eat enough of it, like you are falling in love. Combine this with cacao and maca . . . and then you've really got something!

interesting. there are many varities of durian but never have i heard it described as a cross between bananna and onion. thats real interesting.
i wonder what variety you had? what country did you have it in? and where did you eat it? in singapore vendors have them piled high on the streets and you sit outside and eat them. there is nothing like fresh durian off the tree. LOL.

SheLovesToEat - you are quite the world traveller! I love hearing about your eating experiences in different countries :) . I was in China. My friend called it "Jack Fruit" but it looked like a durian to me.

HA! so are you rawstrength ! i certainly havent been to china. but my tastebuds do like to travel. there is a HUGE difference between jack fruit and durian. durian is more spiky on the outside but i could see where the 2 of them could be mistaken for eachother.
i dont care for the taste of jackfruit. its a bit on the stringy side for me and the flavour is just ok. i have seen them SO BIG you could have thrown and saddle on them. LOL. BIG oblongish kind of fruits... some of them 3 feet long and nearly a foot and a half thick. when they are big.... they are REALLY BIG!
i have a friend that has a few trees of them growing and when they fall on the ground the dog likes to try to get into them. he loves jackfruit.
anyway.... durian is SO tasty. at least we can some here on the mainland.
for that i am glad.

Durian tastes, to me, like carmelized onion flan. And I agree, you either love it or hate it. I love it. I brought one to a potluck a few weeks ago, and a guy tried it for the first time. He was so overcome with bliss that he broke into a sweat and declared that durian would bring world peace. ;)
I think it's a really sensual fruit. And I really adore it. Enjoy!

I had durian pie at a raw restaurant the other day- I have never felt so good in all my life- dreamy, happy, silly- I could have hugged everyone in the restaurant and the folks sitting outside...and honestly that's not usually my style;)

 ...durian PIE??!!! *blink* omgahh, I WANT!
Whenever I eat durian I feel like running around and playing outside like a little kid. I get such a positive energy rush and become really chatty and giggly. It's really amusing. I noticed the times that I ate a lot in a given period, my skin looked even more healthy (probably from the sulphur content). My absolute favorite way has always been to eat it straight from the shell, however I have paired it with banana and coconut and am now curious to try it with raw choco and etc. I mean, durian pie?! Aghh, I would be unstoppable. lol

YEAH! you need to try it. but be prepared to face a REAL sensory challenge. LOL. they really are amazing.
i think its something people should share with someone they love.
i brought one home to my 92 year old dad before he passed away because i know he likes different things.
i wasnt sure he would like it but he nearly ate the whole fruit.
he loved it.... he ate it wth bread.
i should have known he would like it because when i was a kid i remember he LOVED really stinky cheese. LOL

Exactly! The running around and playing outside- that's exactly what it felt like! I wanted to get up and start twirling around in the restaurant. My husband took me there last night and I got the durian pie to go- so.... today will be fun and yummy:D

I love durian. Every Sat i treat myself to a durian smoothie after a nice morning workout. It's the simplest thing to make. I use frozen durian and coconut (water and meat). I don't get that durian "high" hm maybe i need to eat it straight :)

I've made simple smoothies like that too, with just coconut or just banana. I feel more "calm" when I eat it that way but still experience a happy buzz. I think it may be due to my only using a small amount of durian in the smoothies. When I eat it straight I'll usually have 3 or more pieces, depending on the size and concentration. And I don't feel any sort of "crash" well after, just cozy and blissful like I could purr.

ME WANT TOO!![sic] Nothing like the taste of FRESH durian! The Sulphur content is a bonus, the only downside being that durian converts in alcohol once inside the body, not a lot but not an insignificant amount either - that may explain your "rush".
Just the same I usually eat it straight twice a month. Next time I may indeed attempt a durian pie.

OK, I'll admit this isn't going to sound great, but when I saw that guy Andrew from Bizarre Foods who travels all over the world and eats every bug and innard without flinching actually reverse durian and throw it back up, I saw before me, a challenge.:D
How could a FRUIT cause that reaction in someone who eats things that should never be touched, let alone eaten???
So I got mine while running errands - $1-something a pound - total cost was about $6-7. Put it in the car and ran one more errand and when I came back to the car - WHOA!!!!!! This was a fruit that demanded respect, to be sure!!
The texture is beautiful and custardy, the taste is much blander than you would think from the smell.....I've had durian shakes and ice cream, and actually like them.....

Just curious, rawviveyourself, where precisely did you crib the photos from?, they are EXACTLY what are to be found posted in any subway/train station in Singapore.
