I came accross some a few days ago at WHole Paycheck.
i thought i might marinate them.... anyone done this?
they are SO fat and lovely they taste great on their own but i bet a raw marinade would make them REALLY good.
suggestions?
thanx

Fava bean contain vicine. It is recommended that they be cooked thoroughly to render them safe. Some people have an inherited disorder called Favism. It causes a reaction which produces hepatitus and symptoms of influenza. Can be fatal to children.
How many people are affected? I have no clue.

I tried them once because I kept reading how much people like them raw. OMG, so not for me! I thought you could get favism from cooked beans, too....but only some people. Heck, I'm the one who keeps eating raw peanuts, so what do I know?

Emma-Liza, I'm sure you know more than I do.
If you all have already eaten them raw, you must not have favism. :)

ok i looked it up and its something about genetic pre-disposition to them if you are of mediterranean decent. that would be me since i am italian.
even though i have been eating them for years.....maybe its not a good idea.
i have always had them raw. maybe i should think about not eating them anymore. i'll look into it further.... no sense in inviting trouble LOL.

I'm Greek, so yes, I'm of Mediterranean descent. I grew up with my grandmother warning me not to eat fava beans - that they would kill me! Much of my grandmother's wisdom has turned out to be true. Some of it has not.
I've never eaten fava beans. I wonder if there is a way to tell if you have favism? (what a weird "illness" to have!)
I don't think that legumes are really a very natural part of the human diet, anyways. (but I still eat lentils, greenbeans and peas on occassion)

The fear sounds grounded. Glad I don't have favisim, too. I used to pick these up at the farmers' market and usually had the whole bag eaten before I got home (about 3 miles or so). Kind of deliciously addicting. Have never had them cooked, though.
