Okay, one more post and then I'm done for tonight. :) What is everyone's opinion on mushrooms. I know they are a fungi, not a plant or an animal. So do you guys eat them? Or what?

I eat them sometimes. And I believe they are in fact a plant. But I could be wrong. I am not overly fond of them, but if they are chopped up in a salad, I can eat a few.

My opinion is they're perfectly fine to eat. One of the recipes in Alissa's book that I really love is the portabello mushroom "stuffed" with fresh guacamole :)

I try not to eat them because as I understand it, they are a fungus. Doug Kauffmann has a health show that I've watched many times and he says don't eat them. He calls them micro-toxins. However, I know it's a controversial subject and you will get a variety of responses. I always thought they tasted like dirt, kinda "earthy". Some are grown in manure and so I guess I don't need them.

Fungi are fungi, not plants.
Fungi are actually more related to animals than to plants.
They can be good for us because they are more genetically similar to us than plants. For example, fungi supply vitamin D, which is really really (nearly impossible) to get through plant foods.
I think fungi are a valueable addition to our diets. But our diets should be mostly plants (not mostly fungi).
Some fungi can kill. Others can heal :) .
