Hey!

I have some sprouted buckwheat in the fridge and I have been meaning to make something with it. I just haven't had time yet! I sprouted them and immediately put them in the fridge. They have been in there a while (ummm.....a week.. I don't know....). I smelled them and they still smell just fine. Does that mean they are okay? As long as they don't smell yucky can I still use them? Would it be obvious if they were too far gone?

Thanks!
jessica

Just continue to use your smell, although they will not last forever. Sprouts are mostly Water. So I would just add them to a Smoothie and make new ones when I find a Recipe that calls for them.

You can put them in the freezer if you want.

In the restaurant trade, seven days was the max. Any wilting or change of color would indicate loss of nutrients, etc. I try to cram as many into salads and instead of lettuce in a sandwich type meal. Good luck in your sprouting adventure.

With any sprouts make sure after the final rinse you let them dry out first before you put them in the fridge. They will last longer. Glass containers help with this as well. I use my sense of smell to check if sprouts are still fresh or not. You can really tell with buckwheat sprouts. Take a good sniff while they're fresh and you'll definately know when or if they go bad. To me they smell kind of sweet & sour and the sprouts begin to turn brown when they're no longer alive.
