View Full Version : Anyone take nuts out or limit them

after being raw for awhile and find you did much better with a lot less? I know there was a thread recently about fat in the diet, but I am just wondering how people fared with very little nuts as I am finding that nuts just make me want more and more...and it seems I have no portion control. Even if I wasn't hungry, I'm not sure I could stop eating nuts! They were a staple for a long time when I did Atkins and were always my in between snack, but now they just don't seem to satisfy the same...and yes, they're raw...I'm wondering if I would be better off just eating more and more veggies instead?

What are you going to do for "fats" instead?

I seem to have a problem binging on nuts as well. Therefore, I no longer buy them every week. When I do, I buy a small amount and know that if I gobble them all up the first day or two, I won't have any more until the following week.
I do this not because I'm afraid of the fat content, but because I don't want to encourage my tendency to binge uncontrollably on anything. I also binge on baby carrots and celery. I try to moderate a bit for the sole purpose of a) controlling my binging and b) so that I have room for other fruits/veggies, and therefore, other vitamins/nutrients. I am still new to this, still working out the kinks, still learning what works for me, what keeps me feeling high. And it keeps changing!
So yes, try something else too, and something else the next week, and so on and so on! Maybe you'd like some avocado or some oil next week instead of the nuts, etc. From what all the long-timers say, you will just *know* when you've hit the perfect balance for *you*.

Personally, in the past when I did raw, I didn't soak my nuts and I would crave and eat them chronically. This time around, I am soaking them and discovered that I don't eat a fraction of what I use to eat. Alot of the members here have explained the benefits of soaking nuts and I feel it has changed the way my body reacts.
I don't think I want to go back to eating them the other way! :)

I read somewhere here that some people can tolerate seeds better than nuts, so I started using more sunflower seeds instead of almonds and cashews. And I do seem to do better. They're not as easy to over-do. Cashews are like candy, I can't stop popping them in my mouth.

Nuts tend to be a filler, and since they don't have as many nutrients for the body as fruits and veggies, they may slow detox if you eat too many. It's not hard to get too much fat on a raw diet, and usually binging on nuts is the way most will do it.
Fruit is great for a sweet tooth, while veggies/greens are nice to have as your late meal.

I went nut crazy too when I started, there was not balance with my food intake , EVERYTHING I made, dehydrated foods, smoothies, flavor coated almonds, you name it, had nuts in it.
One thing that I was reminded of is to remember that nuts are acidic. And that if your going to do a lot of'um you should also do more green juice/drinks, more alkaline foods - to balance.

I don't eat nuts at all anymore. I suppose I might if I make a pie or something on a holiday, but other than that, I avoid them. My face breaks out bad when I eat them, I cannot control myself, I get cravings for other foods and generally just don't feel well when I eat them. I eat lots of avacado's though! :D

To answer your questions - when craving nuts eat more greens, it really does help.

I overeat nuts easily, too. It's something I have to watch.
I would love to see a recipe book that is nut-free (and added oil-free, too). Anyone know of one?

I would really be shocked if anyone has ever gained weight be being raw. I mean I suppose it's possible but it would be really difficult. Esp, when compared to the SAD diet nuts even in large amounts don't have much fat. I am talking about a gain of 8 or more pounds. Exceeding 2000 calories seems really tough to me.

Yeah, I watch my intake of nuts too ~ watch them as they go into my mouth. :p
I'll repeat what has been said here SOOOOO many times ~ when in transition, don't worry about it. After 2-3 months or so, your body/mind will find a balance. I rarely eat nuts now. Occasionally I'll want some. ANYtime one limits their intake of something, the monkey mind craves it. After it knows it can have it anytime it wants, it'll stop w/ the cravings. The lil monkey mind's chattering will die down and leave one in peace.
Also, IF one is "trying" to lose weight, they tend to restrict which makes the body/mind feel as though it's starving. Another thing I have said here MANY times ~ 5-8 small meals a day will assist in weight loss, energy and overall health.
Injoy ~

i gained about 10 to 15 pounds... more like 12 pounds to be exact... when i included nuts and hemp into my diet !!
all nuts and seeds make me gain extra body fat.... same goes for my dadio!
i envy the ppl who can eat them without gaining a pound!
i dont avoid them for that reason tho... i just dont like em much anymore really! i have little phases where i'll include more nuts in my diet for a while.. and usually gain about 5 pounds each time...even tho i totally limit myself to 12 or 15 every couple of days!
nuts just make the weight pile on me...
and ive been raw roughly 2 years now.
not 100% any longer tho.. as of recently ;)

I had to add nuts to my diet to get my calories above 2000 per day. I'm in the process of losing weight and find if I drop my calories below 1600 I gain weight instead of losing it. I ride my bike 20 miles a day for 3-4 days a week so I need to keep my calories up. I eat 1-3 ounces of nuts after I eat my dinner (mainly cooked veggies and a potato). The nuts have helped me to stop eating for the day.
And I agree with Allison "I would love to see a recipe book that is nut-free (and added oil-free, too). Anyone know of one?" I would like to find a book that has no nuts or oils recipes. It is hard to read all the recipes and mentally calculate all the oil and fat in each serving.

I am new to this (on day 12) and have not been crazy about my increased nut intake. So I have decided that I will ony use nuts in recipes only saoked and not as a snack.

I gained weight last week because I ate too many nuts (cashews, almonds, hazelnuts) and too much coconut. I stopped buying coconut, I will only buy one if other people in my family want some too, and I was buying nuts every week, this week I skipped it and got more sprouts to make sandwiches instead, and more fruit, of course. But I gained maybe 3-4 pounds, not sure, the pants I was wearing dont fit right anymore. I also go for the carrots more often now....Next is the celery!!!

Where did you find that nuts were acidic? I have tested a bunch of different kinds and I have yet to find a RAW nut that ws acidic, all were around 8.0 in thier ph balance.
PS. Someone also mentioned something about oil, is there anything about oil I should be aware of? I have tested my cold pressed extra virgin olive oil and that has a alkaline ph too.
