Hello all,
So, just as brief as possible, I'm a poor college kid in NYC. Everything is pretty much over-priced, but there is a large and vast spectrum of raw food places/organic markets. My question is, if maybe you could give me a little synopsis of what you eat on a daily basis? Favorite (raw) foods? Tips for (not) cooking? Interesting snacks? Cheap & easy substitues? I'm sure there are tons and tons of raw substitutes etc. that I have yet to hear about. Perhaps if I find a little about what you guys base your diet on I'd have a bit clearer idea of how to stick with this. I can pretty much find anything here so lemme know! Thanks sooo much in advance!

Hi Marina! My name is Sarah (college student as well!!) I live right outside of Westchester county! close to ya!
Anyway, Everyone is going to tell you something different.
but here is a General Idea of what my day is like! I do not do breakfast lunch and dinner, I simply eat when im hungry!
Today I have had (in this order):
2 bananas
A Green smoothie (banana, spinach, strawberry)
pineapple
mango
guacamole with carrots
It is about 2pm and I will probably eat a lot more then that! Probably a big salad at dinner time and then some more fruit after dinner!
I do not eat many nuts and seeds. I dont digest them well. I like to keep it simple. I pick up a lot of whats on sale! I got like 30 apples for 8 bucks the other day! so I have been eating them up!
Do you have Alissa's book? It has great recipes in it!
You might want to check out the 30 day challenge section of this forum, peopel list their daily intakes their every day!
hope this helps a little!
Im open for more questions anytime!

Hey! Welcome!
You may wanna check and see what these organic/farmer's market places do with their "damaged" produce. A lot of times they either chuck it, or give it to local farmers for pigs or whatever. They may work a deal w/you.
Also - Mattye Lee Thompson has a WONDERFUL book out - Frugal Raw - gives a ton of advice on eating raw cheaply. I'll give you one hint. Sunflower seeds can be substituted for almonds in almost every recipe calling for almonds.
You can listen to Mattye's radio interview here:

Hi there,
I build my diet around bananas because they are so cheap and abundant. I do a lot of banana based smoothies. In the summertime I switch to melons and other delicious summer fruits when they are cheap.
Try shopping at asian and other ethnic stores, and produce stores. They are MUCH cheaper than grocery stores.
Have a lovely day!
Blessings!

Are you in Manhattan? There is a place called Westerly Market where they have raw food for much cheaper than all the other places. It's on 54th and 8th. The food they make there is AMAZING.
Hope this helps. Debbie

hi! dont know if youre up for this but I was chatting with a guy from new york a few weeks ago and he said theres a group called the "freegans" that do alot of dumpster diving....might be a good way to get you through a pinch or give you more food than youre otherwise able to afford, if youre open to that. also, see if there are any organic produce delivery services in your area and then go to their warehouse and see if they are willing to give you any "imperfect" stuff. i used to work for an organic produce delivery company in seattle and we had TONS of stuff everyday that didnt "make the cut" for going in the customer bins. especially at the end of the week we even sometimes had loads of "perfect" produce left over. the guys who worked there were glad to give it away because theyd rather see it get used than thrown away
