Oh Jenna - I'm so sad for you. I know how you feel. There is a hole there in your heart for sure.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Sorry to hear that. My cat is older and has a heart problem so I will soon be facing the same thing.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I have also had cats all of my life. When I was a kid I found 3 little kittens that someone had tied in a pillow case and tossed into a dumpster behind the local five and dime. I went dumpster diving with my sisters help to get them out of there. My mom let me keep one (the other 2 went to a no kill shelter). That little kitten lived to be 21 years old- finally had to let her go when she could no longer walk without pain.

Our pets are like our friends, family and children. I have 4 cats now that I look upon as my children. The oldest are going to be 14 years old (I have had them since they were only a few weeks old) both have health conditions that come with age. I will be heart broken when they go to kitty heaven. It is ok to be happy and sad depending on the memory.

I can really sympathize with you. I had my last cat for several years and she died of kidney disease. Sadly, I was actually away when she got really bad. My friend who was housesitting had to have her put down. I knew it was coming before I left and I cried a lot because she was such a part of my life and I didn't want to see her suffer either.

It took me a while before I could have a new cat, but when I was ready they seemed to find me (though a friend of a friend). I am so happy to have them. But I still miss my old cat, Martha. Her picture is still on my desk at work.

That cat knew love—and gave love—which gave it a lot of meaning and purpose in its life. What a blessed cat indeed. Ceiling-cat will always look down on you fondly.

RawPaw said exactly what I wanted to say. You gave her a good life filled with love and in the end you were able to stop her suffering. I know how painful the loss can be. I hope it helps to know that others are sending you love and kind thoughts.

My gosh so sorry but I know you made the right decision. Being a great pet owner to me has made putting down our several dogs much easier. I have a new dog, actually got her 8+ years back, but she is darling and similar to one of the other ones we had. It was intentional pick. She's BARF so worth saving mega bucks too. She is very active and super smart. I love our Molly, doggie, that eats game meat when available. She's allergic to store bought foods as I am declaring that over here for years. The vet never sees her either.

Remember when possible the fabulous memories the cat brought you. The cat was super lucky to have a fabulous family that you all provided.

Thanks for sharing your love for your cat with us. Of sorry for putting the cat down, but knowing it was best, I know you will see the decision was for the "best interest of the cat."

Thank you guys, it really means a lot. I think all of the good energies are making healing easier.

I was at my parents house last night, and it is such a habit to call out my cat's name. I look at the couch, cat isn't on the couch so she must be in her bed...oh wait, she isn't in the bed either :( Five minutes later, you go through that same thought again. It's very weird...

Here's a picture to share...this is my Downy, always smiling!

Thank you so much, how very kind of you <3
The positive energies are so helpful! I knew the death of my kitty would be hard to deal with, but it hasn't been as hard as I always thought. I'm sure I have you and the others sending good vibes to thank for this <3 Thank you thank you!

Downy (more commonly called Kitty by us) was such a prissy priss! She had such a fun personality and loved to play and show her fire until her last days(14 years old!). Super feisty, but loving... She's the only cat I know who enjoyed cocktails! She was also very self-conscious about her belly, which hung a little bit(and swung back and forth when she'd run!!) She hated her belly being rubbed! But she loved it when we would scratch her ears :)

I feel like animals are angels sent to comfort us. I know how much they have comforted me over the years. Maybe some are only sent here for a time but they are sure worth the hurt because they give such love and comfort while on this earth. Sorry for your loss. Lorna

Jenna,

I have been in this position before. I had a cat for 19 years, since second grade, I was in 7 when she was born. Her mother was my first cat. She just passed away last January and it is still surreal. I am so so so sorry, and I know the hurt won't ever stop, just fade a little. If you need anything don't hesitate to contact me. We can exchange pictures or something. Whatever you feel you need. It really feels like losing a member of your family, because you did. Again I am so sorry. :(

When Kitten passed away a friend said to me, that we are doomed because we adopt and fall in love with these creatures knowing full well we will have to watch them die. The love is worth it, and maybe the lesson in impermanence will make us stronger. But it still hurts.
