How long do you need to dry:
Sunflower seeds
Flax seeds
i am making the onion bread (if anyone has heard of this)
Thanks so much!

The onion bread recipe you mix the ingredients together first, then dry as a cracker/bread.
I'm not sure I understand the question.

well you are supposed to
1.soak your seeds
2. then dehydrate to grind them, from my understanding if you grind them right after they are soaked they contain too much water and may keep the batter from sticking

I do dry sunflower seeds but have never dried flax seeds and do not think that you can.
I recommend that you dry the sunflower seeds at a low temp (100) and for longer. You will know when they are done by the feel of them.

Apparently, you don't soak neither of them for that recipe, certainly not the flaxseed but for the sunflower seed, if you do soak them, i probably will dehydrate them to remove the water. Perhaps half hour. When i try this recipe again, i will try to soak my sunflower seed. I notice that i cannot digest them otherwise.
Best luck

The first time I ate onion bread I was at Catch a Healthy Habit Cafe in CT. It was soo good, but the next morning I woke up and had to drink half a gallon of water. I guess I'm just not used to eating dehydrated foods.

I made the onion bread last week and it was sooo delicious, I soaked my sunflower seeds for just 4 hours, and then just drained them really well, and then ground them up and it all stuck together fine for me. I didn't soak the flax at all.

i do have the recipe :) and it dose not call for soaking, but i know u are supposed to for digestion, and mine would appreciate it ;D.
I did soak the sunflower seeds, and dried them for bit, if you don't they are very hard to grind in the coffee grinder, there is too much water and it sticks, and the blades don't grind anything up really.
Flax seeds- i did also soak, but learned that there is no way you can make this recipe with soak flax seeds, so i made a batch of crackers with those, and got new dry flax to grind....
all trial and error with me....it is in the dehydrator now so we will see how it goes.
I am really interested in learning how long you should dehydrate your seeds/nuts after they have been soaked..can you over dehydrate? will it kill the enzymes?

you know i am just not sure what the problem is your having. do you have a food processor? thats really good for making dough.
yes i can see that you have to have dry seeds to grind in a coffee grinder but
if you grind dry flax seeds then put some water in to soak them you have a nice dough that will hold together when you dehydrate it.
if you soak and dry seeds then grind them you have to have something to bind the dough or it will be crumbly... the gel like water from flax does this...or at least it has for me. if you dont have a food processor then i dont know how you can make a decent dough. but now that said.... i have soaked whole flax seeds, seasoned them and then spread them out on a dehydrator sheet and dehydrated them just fine. they made very nice bread.
you just cant let them get too dry in the dehydrator or then you have crackers.
it just seems like so much more work to soak the seeds then dry them then grind ..THEN dry them again after you have mixed a dough. if you had a food processor all you would have to do is combine all the soaked seeds and the onions and seasoning and wizz it up in the food processor and spread it out on the teflex sheets and dry.
ok well.... good luck to you. if i am missing something here and not getting your point.... i appologize. i am sure you will get it sorted out.

and no... as long as the temp is low it will not kill the enzymes. i try to keep my dehydrator at 115. thats usually a good temp.

update: My Bread turned out...yippeee!
I soaked and dried the sunflower seeds (i know it is a lot of work, but seeds and nuts are hard on my digestion and soaking them is supposed to make them easier and inhibit the enzymes)
i did soak the flax seeds .....whoops....had to make crackers out of those, and then start with dry flax seeds to be ground up.
I mixed everything together in a bowl with a fork (no food processor) spread it out on the sheets and dehydrated away...this morning i was able to take it out and it is oh so delicious.
thanks everyone for all of your help....ma I was having a hard time hehe:p
