Hi, does anyone know if using teeth whitening at home kits are safe to use. I am a 100% raw foodist for 17 months and do not want to do anything I might be sensitive to. Thank you for any replies.
Debbie
It depends on how you would define "safe"! Have you already tried oil pulling??

Don't think you would actually be swallowing the solution. I've read that most home kits don't work very well in the levels of whitening. Saw somewhere about one called Celebrity White or something like that. Read the reviews and seemed like a good product. Lots cheaper than the dentist charge. There was some kind of trick--click the star on their website and auto save $20 or something. Curious if anyone has tried.
I'm doing oil pulling and am seeing a difference. No coffee anymore so that also helps.

Hi, thanks for the quick replies. No, I have not tried oil pulling. I'm scared. lol. Maybe I should try it. I'm thinking about it. Has anyone else seen results of whiter teeth from oil pulling?

My teeth are blindingly white after oil pulling. I don't even do it anymore...I did it for about a month and that was 3-4 months ago. My teeth are still gorgeous. My mom also has white teeth from oil pulling. It's great :)

haha I'd be more scared of a factory-made, chemical-filled teeth whitening kit than of a bit of oil pulling. Don't fear oil pulling, it works wonders.
At home teeth whitening kits work by eroding away at the enamel. I don't recommend them. They make your teeth weaker.
There is info about it at www.oilpulling.com, and I also blogged about it at http://readysethealthy.blogspot.com/2008/06/oil-pulling-how-and-why.html .
Oil pulling is NOT scary at all -- but it does take some getting used to because it's so different. I can't believe how effective it is!

Yeah, I still think oil pulling is kind of gross (blech) but it works and is definitely not scary.
lol. blindingly white, hu? i like that. :)
yeah. i think oil pulling is the most natural and safest whitening system out there. ;) it also helps with gingivitis. the black on my front tooth is almost gone!
i remember starting with EVOO. it was so nasty. now it's just second nature. i enjoyed using sunflower oil as well. haven't tried sesame yet, and i just wanted to eat the coconut oil. so i don't use coconut anymore....

most of the commercial kits include a lot of hydrogen peroxide and some kind of "edible glue" on the plastic strips you attach to your teeth. I don't know what the "glue" is made of, but I know my mom told me never to eat glue when I was a kid! :D

The link to the oil pulling website didn't work until I left the dash out of it. Now I am curious to try it, with an oil that I like the taste of. I don't dislike coconuts but like them well enough to try it. :)

I got the Crest professional strips from my dentist for about $40. They are as effective as the teeth tray you can get from the dentist and put the hydrogen peroxide gel in. I've never had any ill effects and they do work.

My sister used those. They worked for awhile, but then her teeth started to discolor again. It is much more costly than oil pulling.
Oil pulling is simple, cheap and effective.

Whoops! I just fixed that. Thanks!

Google using strawberries to whiten teeth
oh. you might also be interested in reading the testimonies on earthclinic.com. that's where i first learned about oil pulling. the testimonies include what types of oils people used, their results, troubleshooting , etc....

I'd like to add that the proponents advocate against not using a toothpaste afterwards due to the presence of glycerine in most toothpastes which makes it harder for the tooth to absorb.
I looked at my toothpaste, no glycerine, and has essential oils and xylitol (which is good for helping the teeth when you eat a lot of fruit).
The name is Thieves Essential oil blend Dentarome Ultra.

Thanks for the link to earthclinic.com. So many websites, so little time! I am compiling a big list of them to read when school is out for the semester and I no longer have deadlines.
