View Full Version : my mom gets numb of pangs on her left arm & hands
hi guys. my mom has had a numbing sensation or pain in her left arm & hands. she goes to the doctor often. so i'm not sure if she's mentioned this to her physician. she's had this condition since my brother was born which was 18 yrs. ago. she thinks it's arthritis in her hand.
does anyone know what it could be? i think i'm going to set an appt. w/ the doctor for her but would like to hold off to see if there's anything natural i can suggest to her first.

I would suggest going to a chiropractor. I work as a receptionist for one and a lot of people come in because of numbness in their arms/hands. it could be something in her neck thats causing it.

You can suggest it, but will she do it?
What IS she doing? Does she do taiji/qigong? Yoga? Oftentimes it's pressure on a nerve. As we get older, we stop moving and not doing things we use to do to keep us flexible and adjustable. If she's rigid, the more various types of movement she does, the more her body will naturally adjust and heal.

she is a deli clerk... handing out food & standing a lot. she's also left-handed so she uses that hand a lot. some of her fingers would get stiff in certain positions, and when she goes to move them to be straight, it hurts. she says it's more intense the older she gets.
i also thought it may be strain on her muscles, too. hm.... i tried getting more fruit and raw into her. the other day i made an orange smoothie and she had some, too but she added some white sugar, lol. goodness, but i guess at least, she had some oranges.
i'll think up some ideas to get her to do more various movements somehow and incorporate more healthy foods into her diet. she's adverse to fruits but eats a lot of veggies. :D i'm trying to get her off the coffee & cream, but she yells at me, haha.

Give her some agave and rich cashew milk to put in her coffee instead of the sugar and cream. You can tell her to use the agave instead of sugar in her orange drinks, too. Every little bit helps.
It sounds like something neurological to me. Something to do with the brain and/or nerves.
agave sounds good. are there more raw substitute sugar alternatives? i'm stopping by whole foods next weekend. so i will grab the agave or anything else. definitely. every little thing helps.
i know my mom LOVES smoothies... the pina colada flavors or manga banana. i've seen the place put some kind of thick liquid sugar mixture into the drinks. so i'm not sure how sweet they are as compared to the smoothies i create for. i'm going to be experimenting. :D
my mom uses international delight "french vanilla" in her coffee.
if it does have to do with the brain and/or nerves, is there anything else i can do for her in addition to having her eating more healthy & some stretching exercises? any supplements that would help?

It's probably one of those Ritus Boys that have attached themselves to her from years of repeated motion. This one first name is Arther (Arthritis)

I second the chiropractor. My hubby has had numbness in his arm/arms on and off for years and it WAS chiropractic (his neck). I started having pain in my arm (L) and my shoulder and elbow were misaligned. I could still used them but my arm just ached, it took one trip to the chiro for me. I hope she finds what it is.
Blessings,

I am an advanced CranioSacral Therapist and I agree with the other posters: this is related to her cervical vertebra (neck) and most likely complicated with nerve entrapment in the whole shoulder quadrant region.
I really suggest the chiropractor-but a good one, not a typical "X-ray you to death, come three times a week for the rest of your life," kind. I suggest an upper cervical specific chiro plus deep tissue or myofascial release massage and also CranioSacral Therapy.
She might end up spending $1000 on all these practitioner, but she will resolve her issue and can even experience significant transformation in her life too. Healing bodywork is SO helpful when it's done well! SO worth the investment!
We ALL deserve that!! :)

From your description it sounds like circulation blockages in the joints and perhaps even concentrated in the lower extremeties which can impact the fingers, hands and other points in the body. After I broke my leg I experienced this for 1 year in recovery and sometimes it was very painful. I would exercise or talk a small walk and I would get these very painful numb and pinpoint pricks in my legs and arms. It was like the sensation when a place in your body has fallen asleep due to lack of blood circulation and as you begin to move it and the blood flows again it is initially painful. Well this is exacerbated when it's out of your control.
I agree with all of the suggestions above. Massage therapy including craniosacral, acupuncture treatments, working with a non-force chiropractor and eating raw foods all helped me. Also I tried hydrotherapy, alternating hot/cold showers. If you or your dear Mom lives near a hot springs, the therapeutic value of dipping yourself in a natural hot springs cannot be underestimated. I went at least 2-3x per year and I felt sooooooo much better immediately. If you can't swing the expense of travel to a hot springs, you can also create a spa at home by putting dead sea bath salts or epsom salts in warm/hot bath water and soaking for 20-45 minutes. Water is such an amazing healer.
I hope that your Mom feels better.
Thanks guys. Well, so far, I've gotten her into fruit smoothies. She even sent my brother to the store the other day, & he had trouble deciphering the difference b/wn a tangerine, grape fruit & oranges, hehehe. :p
I'll look into all your suggestions. As for the chiropractor, I'm meeting someone on a blind date this weekend who happens to be a chiropractor :D. So hopefully, we can be friends & I can ask some questions about the person's expertise in the area. :)
