View Full Version : Spirulina side effects...
I just replied to a previous post about Spirulina's negative side effects in another section....I think it was in the "over 50" section, which I am not :D Sooo, I thought I would also post it again here. ;)
Anyway.....
Okay...so a couple of months ago my Mom bought me a huge bottle of Spirulina, I was so excited to try it in smoothies etc... but then I read this thread along with hearing from others about the possible negative side effects.
I have heard that if I take to much...say more than a tablespoon, it might cause nausea, dizziness, fatigue, heart palpitations etc...
Now I have become a nervous nelly....my poor little bottle of Spirulina just sits in my fridge staring at me.
Is there a certain amount that I should use?? I absolutely do not want to feel funky after taking it. Is that common with Spirulina?
Any advice?

I sometimes put about a tablespoonful in my smoothies. I have had no bad result at all , and it sure makes the smoothie a beautiful rich, dark, color.

I've taken 6 tablespoons in one day before, and I felt fine. I use liberal amounts of spirulina, when I have a jar of it. I can't get enough of that stuff!

Begin with 1 teaspoon or less. Stick with that for a week or two, then gradually increase, if you want. The negative side effects may come from taking too much when your not used to it.

I've been taking it for two months now and I haven't experienced any negative side effects.

I originally would get fatigued off of it. I mistook it for an allergic intolerance but now I do very well with it and feel energetic after incorporating it into my diet, so I suspect either it was a bad source or a detox affect.
Thank you!!! I feel so much better about giving it a try...
Okay...now I'm gonna go dig out my spirulina in the back of my fridge and make a smoothie. ;)
I shall not fear the Spirulina :D

Try it in a fruit smoothie with cacao, mesquite and maca. The flavors balance and blend perfectly . . . and it tastes so good.

The taste? I love the taste of Spirulina! I mix some with water and eat it like such.. like pond scum haha? I think not. :p
Do not be afraid to eat it like any other food, finding the balance that is right for you.

www.mountainroseherbs.com is $20 for 16 oz, but the quality could be sketchy. www.rawfromthefarm.com is the best deal for the really high quality stuff that I know of, but their price is $27 for 16 oz.
Side effects of spirulina may include improved athletic performance, increased muscle tone, clear thinking, feeling like you are falling in love and having the most amazing time ever.

The man that owns the little health food store by my house said that a person can survive on just spirulina and water. He said that it will give you energy as well but never said not to take too much of it. I don't use a powdered version so I can't make any conversion here, but I do take 2 tablets and the recommended amount is 4 to 6 tablets. I've never felt any funny effects from it but that could be from the small amount that I take. I agree that you should just start out on a small amount and see how you feel, I think you will be fine though as long as you take it slow.

what are the benefits of spirulina?
Spirulina is 65% complete protein, making it the world's highest known source. The protein contains all 8 essential amino acids, making it a complete protein. Contains vitamins A, B-1, B-2, B-6, B-12, E, and K and provides minerals, trace minerals, cell salts, phytonutrients and enzymes, as well as an abundance of chlorophyll & other beneficial pigments.
It can be made into a tasty spread by mixing it with avocado. Don't even need a blender.

Yes, it's good with avocado. I often mash spirulina with olive oil, avocado, cayenne pepper and sea salt.

I think that the symptoms you are refering to is detox symptoms. Spirulina is detoxing, it specialy removes heavy metals and toxins from our system. So always take it with water.
Start slow, with maby half a tablespoon then after 5 days increas, and then more. Take it slow.
I love spirulina. I always take it in the morning with my two big glasses of water as the first thing. It can keep me going for atleast an houre before I need to eat. It is great to balance the blodsugar, give an energy boost, and just make you feel stronger. Better than coffe ;)
I have had one bad experience with a differnt brand of spiruina than the one I usely use. It gave me a bad headacke. I tryed for several days, and finaly went back to my normal brand and the headackes dissapered. Dont know why ?

I hate the taste and I love seaweed.
You can buy it cheap through the Frontier co-op. I bought a pound of organic spirulina for $23.85.
You can see the Wholesale catalog here: https://wholesale.frontiercoop.com/whslpubl/FrontierWholesaleCatalog.pdf

It tastes like lake water to me. It might taste better in a smoothie. I've been taking a teaspoon a day in water for about a week now and haven't noticed it doing great things for my body. It hasn't hurt me, though. I doubt I'll buy any more when my bottle is gone.

Same here but the taste is awful so I don't have as much.
I think a lot of people recommend heaping tablespoons of the stuff.
