I'm flying to Michigan and I'll be in a rural area without easy access to a health food store. So, I'm wondering what I can bring on the plane.
If I ask them to not put seeds to sprout through the x-ray machine, will security cooperate?
And if they won't, does that mean the seeds won't germinate?
I think that's my most important question, but any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I'm dehydrating buckwheat to pack in my suitcase.
thanks, Stina

no promises, but ive never had the xray interfere with seeds or nuts. ive had almonds and i think sunnies in my bag and theyve probably been through multiple xrays and i didnt have a problem with them sprouting.... ive also taken loads of veggie seeds in their packets in my coat pockets, and theyve also gone through the x ray. sure, they didnt all sprout, but i think thats just due to the germination rate of packaged veggie seeds, not to the xrays. i hate the idea of my stuff going through the xrays too, but seems like the stuff came thru ok.... i had an opened jar of artisana coconut butter though once and it got opened and inspected and i had to step aside then the outside of it checked for nuclear residue or something. they gave it back though. but i think youre seeds will still sprout.

Mr.Liza says x-ray is just low frequency light and shouldn't harm your seeds in the time it takes to pass through the security screening.

He actually padded his answer with a lot of Einsteinian references, but I boiled it down for ya! Plus, I didn't retain it all.;)

You can asked to have your baggage hand checked if you're really concerned about the X-rays.
When I was flying throughout China during the olympics, however, I never requested a hand check because security was so tight and I didn't want them to deport me! I ate some X-rayed fruits and seeds and they seemed fine. I didn't check if they could sprout, though.

Taking food with you is a GREAT idea!
I'm a flight attendant and I go through security 2 ...sometimetimes 3 tiimes in a day. I've never had any problems with taking anything I brought. Yes, you can have them hand check anything you want, if you are concerned and I believe that they will. You can call the specific Airport and ask if you want to know for sure... But, like RawStrength said, I've eaten x-rayed food many times and it doesn't bother me...
Another option is to get food once you arrive at your destination. Some Whole Foods have different sprouts available, or you could ask a relative you're staying with to sprout for you in preparation of your visit... I know being in the Rurals will be rough, but you can do it!!! :)

There are x-ray machines at truck scales, so everything that is transported across country gets x-rayed these days. You would have to buy EVERYTHING local, including your seeds, to avoid it being x-rayed.

I'm here and my trip is going well. It's amazing how easy it is to make do with the raw food diet!

That is so sweet of you! thanks. And it's true, I'm much more in a position to help my boyfriend's grieving family by me eating raw, and they are so appreciating the raw food I'm preparing; it's uplifting them in a difficult time instead of contaminated dead food dragging down their spirits. I feel like I'm sharing a gift from God.
