Just received my dehydrator today and I'm so excited to try out a new recipe. Quick question though....

Supposedly this brand is supposed to dehydrate faster than the excalibur according to Alissa and some other reviews. Wondering if that means I should shorten the amount of time for her recipes? Anybody else own one and have to do that? What's your experience been like?

Thanks!
Anna

It doesn't matter what "d" you have, you have to check during the process to see what's going on. As much depends on the weather as the thermostat.

Ok so the very first thing I'm making is the famous kale chips. I'm starting out simple :-)

The colors are definitely a little 80's fabulous, but hey no biggie. It's suprisingly QUIET! I've never used one so I don't have anything to compare it to, but much quieter then I expected. Can't wait to try my kale chips in the morning!

I just got my Good4U dehydrator today too!! I am SOOO excited. I wasnt going to get one and then one day I splurged and bought myself both a food processor and the dehydrator. I have a pretty good blender but I might still go for a Vitamix one day...

All of this is perfect timing because I am starting my first 100% raw for 30 days challenge. My sister is doing it with me so we can support each other. I am looking forward to seeing how I feel when I am 100% raw.

I will be making flax crackers and banana leathers tomorrow!!

Yay for us! How do you like it so far? How did your recipes turn out?

I made my kale chips and they were tasty. I have nothing to compare them too so I guess they turned out like they should have! lol. Today I have jacima fries dehydrating and I've used it to warm up a zuchinni pasta creation. So far I love it!

I got mine today! I am dying to use it, but it didn't come with instructions on how to clean the sheets, does anyone know if I can I put them in the dishwasher? Also do I use both sheets at one time, put the wired one under the solid one?

I'm not sure about the cleaning. I would think they are dishwasher safe, but they probably dont need vigorous cleaning. I would think running some hot water over them unless you had something really stick/oily.

I haven't used the solid sheets yet, I've just been using the teflex sheets and everything's turning out good. A recipe will usually tell you which type it calls for.

Have fun!

hi again i see there are a few people with this dehydrator. i was also wondering if your product is quite cold to the touch when your dehydrating.
thanks again

I'm new to raw and definitely new to dehydrating, so I don't think I'm the one to give advice. However, I can't say the air feels hot when it blows out but I didn't notice mine feeling cold either. I think we're so used to using a blazing hot stove, that the air surely feels different in the dehydrator. I dehydrated today, and my food was cold for quite awhile. I think it just takes a long time to get it warm. I'm sure you could use some insight from an expert raw cook though :)

Rawnna- Im glad your kale chips turned out good. I want to try making those- along with zucchini and banana chips.

I just put 8 trays worth of crackers into the dehydrator!! I made 2 of Alissa'a recipes- the basic flax cracker and the veggie flax cracker. I really hope they turn out good because there is A LOT of food in there! They take awhile, so I should know how they turn out in about a day or so.

Im really glad I splurged and got a dehydrator. There is just so much that I can make! Im new to raw food and I am starting my 100% for 30 days this Saturday, so im trying to have as much stuff ready as possible.

As far as cleaning goes, I dont know if they are dishwasher safe- I just washed everything by hand in hot soapy water.

I just started the dehydrator and I agree with Rawnna- it doesnt feel too hot or cold.

Have fun with all of your "uncooking" everyone! :)

Does the Good4U have a way of letting you dehyrdate tall items, like stuff in pie plates, or casserole dishes?

This is one of the things I hate about my little temporary Nesco. But the Nesco has adaptable trays I can buy with no center to do taller things.

Both of the crackers turned out great! Now I just need to find some great dip recipes that I can eat them with (although they are delicious on their own too)

Pirawna- It doesnt yet. The dehydrator does not have a door, so if you want to remove a tray in order to put something tall inside, you will have an open space. The company that makes the Good4U dehydrator is currently making some blanks that will solve this problem- if you order from Alissa's website, you will get them sent to you as soon as they are ready. But I do wonder if you could just cover the front of the dehydrator with something- like a towel or a piece of aluminum or something like that.... I havent tried that though and I dont know if it would work.

I am thinking about buying a good4you dehydrator............ so is it safe to say that you who own it like it or would you if you could do it again buy the excalibur?

pirawna & bicb85 I asked someone who sales them and he said the removes a tray for larger items and covers the gap with tin foil, and like you said they are coming out with blanks soon.

Mine doesn't really blow cold or hot air, since I have never dehydrated before I am not sure what it is suppose to be. But I started making banana fruit leathers yesterday and they seem to be doing well, but I tried turning them over this morning and I made a huge mess because the outside was more firm than the middle, so hopefully they will still turn out ok! Are the teflex sheets the ones with the holes? The banana seems to just be sticking to the solid ones. :(

I'd say go for the Good4U. Alyssa even reccomends it now saying that its more quiet and faster then the excalibur. I like mine a lot so far! I've never used the excalibur, but my good4u seems like a very good dehydrator

It's just my mom and I going raw, so at first I was just going to go with the 6 tray, but then I realized its only 30 bucks more to get the 10 tray and now I'm glad I did. Turns out the 10 tray is actually a little bit more compact than the 6 (suprisingly) and it's not as big as I expected at all. So personally, I would suggest the 10 tray. Better to have a little more room for only 30 more.

I agree- go with the Good4U. Its much cheaper and they give you 10 mesh sheets and 10 teflex sheets... im pretty sure that excalibur doesnt do that.

Also, I definitely recommend the 10 tray. For only $30 more, its worth it!

I think teflex are the sheets without the holes, but im not 100% sure on that....

On alissa's site it has a side by side comparison of them both, and when you look at the measurements it is slightly smaller for some reason.

Hi rawnna, I don't want to harp on this, but I guess I'm still undecided. Is it bad to get a ten tray if maybe most of the time I will just have half the trys full? Ya as far as the measurments they are different on just about every site.

Well, in my experience, I've only used about 3-4 of the trays of mine so far. However I've made very simple things too, such as fries, chips, and today I made eggplant parmesan, but that was in a pan and required me taking two trays out for the space at the bottom. So honestly, I've yet to actually use all 10 trays. However, I think once I get more experienced and play around more with recipes, I'll use them all. Such as making fruit chews, apple chips, etc. I hear those things can take up a lot of tray room. So even though I've not used the 10 trays, I don't at all feel like it was a waste of money because again it was only 30 dollars more. Plus, I haven't had to clean one tray because I have many to use. Ha ha, how lazy does that sound! But seriously, it is kind of nice. Just wait til you use them all and then wash them. (Hope that's sanitary! :D )

I wonder why the measurements are different on the sites? I'm not sure, I just remember looking at them and figuring the bigger one was slightly smaller in one of the dimensions. I don't think there's a big difference though.

It's completely up to you and what you think you will use. If you get the smaller one, that may be all you need. Depends on if you are really planning on making a total lifestyle change. If you are, as I'm hoping to do as well, then I would think the bigger would be better for you in the long run, since later you may get more creative and make things in bigger quantities for a whole week. But just go with your instinct! :)

Hope that helped.
