View Full Version : Need some substitutes

I searched the site but didn't find the info I need anywhere. My 6.5 year is off several foods but luckily can have most nuts and some sesame. Sadly, he cannot have sunflower seeds which I see in a lot of raw food. Does anyone have a proven substitute? Sunflower seeds are something DS really likes but otherwise he is rather "selective". I know there are a lot of things I could experiment with but thought I might save myself some work. I don't see a lot of tamari and soy sauce in RF recipes but I have run into a few times. Does anyone have a good sub for that? I'm thinking I can sub pecans for walnuts? He's not allergic to walnuts but they hurt his mouth so I don't want him eating them. Sigh......He is currently off of gluten, corn, soy, diary, sunflower seeds. He also has a severe peanut allergy but I rarely see them in RF - so nice. I'm really tired of him eating so much rice. In case you are wondering....he most likely is suffering from leaky gut - he has asthma and allergies and what I call a strong personality, mostly from not feeling well i think. He's not on the spectrum. The point in taking out all the food was to reduce inflammation. I'm really really really trying to increase his whole food intake but it's an uphill battle - been doing a lot of smoothies. He does love Jennifer Cornbleet's chocolate mousse - the only avocado he's eaten in his entire life! Thanks - and thanks for the mini vent.

I routinely sub all kinds of nuts and seeds for each other. (Can't figure out how to say that grammatically!) I'm not a big fan of sunflower seeds, so I often sub the same amount of pumpkin seeds. I like cashews and macadamias, but better as a blend than either alone, so I sub accordingly. Just sub the same amounts of anything, 1:1, you or your child likes.

I know you were asking for subs for sunflower, but also noticed that your son like the chocolate mousse with avo's. My kids are all of gluten, corn, soy and dairy. They are not 100% raw but do lots of raw food. Just this afternoon, for lunch, my girls had "raw tacos" , my son does like them so he had chocolate pudding (probably pretty close to the chocolate mousse) and my baby 16 month old had strawberry icecream (that is what we call it). Its just an avocado and frozen strawberries some agave sweetened to taste and some water, just enough to mix. The girls finished it off. All of my kids love bananas and mangos blended together. Just a few ideas.
