I am able to get hemp seeds with the shells still intact, which means they sprout. and they are fairly cheap too. about 3.00 a pound or so (2 euro). we can also get the hulled ones, but they are expensive and not refrigerated and i didnt like them when i tried them, so i dont really trust that they arent rancid. besides, isnt sprouting supposed to improve the nutritional composition? the problem? the hulls... ive been making hemp milk buy soaking, then sprouting until they just start to break out of the hulls, then blending them like mad with water, then straining. problem is that much of the seeds are lost mixed in with the hulls, and this seems like a waste of money and nutrients, as well as the milk not being as creamy as it could. thing is that it seems theres just no way to separate out the husks from the seeds/seed fragments, either before or after blending. and the husks are hard, like sunflower seed shells; not something thats really pleasant to eat. i noticed that the bulk of the shells settles to the bottom of the blender, so i stopped straining the top 3/4 or so, but there is still ALOT of seed lost with the ground husks. i also tried letting them sprout until they were big enough until the husks could be slipped off--but this was alot of work and when the sprouts get any more than tiny tiny tails, they turn into the bitterest sprouts i have ever tasted--not exactly palatable for hemp milk.
So... has anyone ever dealt with unhulled hemp seeds? how did you use them/what did you do with them? i really like the hemp milk (with vanilla and honey), but it seems like theres alot of waste. im sort of limited on what kind of milks I can make because almonds are unaffordable (and besides, alot of them are imported from the US, so theyre pasteurized), and sunflower and sesame milk isnt well-liked by my tummy. so i like the hemp. but id like to be getting more of the protein and nutrients out of it instead of flushing it down the drain.....
any suggestions?
thanks
