Hi Everyone,
I'm a bit confused about how nuts weigh out. I've always been under the impression that 1 oz of nuts is about 1/4 cup. When I look up several raw nuts like walnuts and almonds that I use every day in Fitday, it shows the nutritional information the same for 1 oz and for 1/4 cup.
But I just weighed 1 oz of almonds on my small food scale at home and I came up with less than 1/8 cup of almonds showing as 1 oz . I haven't been weighing nuts but just taking 1/4 cup each time so now I'm concerned because I may have been eating double the amount of nuts!!!
Can someone clarify this for me?

I am no help...I am too busy popping them in My mouth to weigh them.

spicyfull, that's so funny  . Technically, I wouldn't worry too much about weighing them either, since, amazingly, nuts are one food that I actually tend not to overeat (dried fruit, on the other hand...) but I weigh them because I make a lot of recipes with nuts that need to be weighed.

Interesting, but no. Don't weigh nuttin' no more (couldn't resist).
Seriously. I don't weigh "things" ;)

I would think it would depend on the density and size of the nuts. For example a 1/4 cup of walnut halves would weigh less than a 1/4 cup of walnut pieces because the pieces can fit more tightly in the cup and therefore more dense. Weight is generally a more accurate measurement of dry ingredients.

OK, so I went into the health food store today and just started checking the packages off the shelves of nuts with the nutritional information. All of them had serving sizes of 1/4 cup and calories of 160-200 per serving, which is about what I figured into my menu plan (I'm not trying to restrict calories too much but I do want to lose 20 pounds so I have to be mindful of the amount of nuts that I'm eating). So I'm going to assume that 1/4 cup is the given serving of nuts and I'm not eating 400 calories when I take a 1/4 cup of walnuts :D.
The funny thing is that I made some homemade raw fudge last night with processing almonds in a coffee grinder and I got freaked out by the thought that I might be eating 400 calories in my usual 1/4 cup serving. So I made it with 1/8 cup of almonds instead. And the fudge turned out much tastier than with the 1/4 cup serving!

Tammay - you have got to stop worrying about calories, and weights of things. Just eat and have fun. I guarantee if you eat 100% of nuts, seeds, sprouts, fruit, veggies, you WILL be healthy. You WILL either lose or maintain your body's preferred weight. You WILL have energy. Spend that thinking and worrying about the calories, etc. on something fun. Like walking in the woods barefoot. Or running in the rain. Or playing an instrument...

If I want to reach in the bag and start munching I remind myself, 12 large almonds or 6 brazil nuts is a serving, and every serving counts.
Most of the time I don't care. That's why my body weight is still at 190 lbs and hasn't changed for 2 months!

But think about this. Two months is a heck of a shorter period of time than it took to get where you are, right? Your body is healing too. Transforming. It can't do everything at once! LOL!
I guess I don't count "things" anymore too is because numbers and I are not friends. LOL!
I just keep it simple and I love it that way...

Thanks VeganforLife. I keep telling myself that! I'm sorry. I've just gotten a little discouraged, but that's for another thread or blog. Again, thanks for the healing reminder.
