I have been eating fruit for breakfast for over a year, and i dont think its serving me well. The high sugar content seems to set me up for sugar cravings all day. I have been adding a very small amount of chopped nuts to the fruit lately and that doesnt seem to help. Raw granola is out as the calorie content is way over the top, I would have to eat at least a half a cup to feel satisfied and thats easily 500 calories...way too much for breakfast. anyone have any ideas? I went from bananas, to berries, to apples to mixed to pears and figs...tried it all...i love it all, but I feel the need to make a change, and save the fruit for my treats not meals.

Buckwheaties and nut mylk (and banana and berries).
Soak/sprout/dehydrate buckwheat and you got yourself a heck of a cereal! ;)

BTW? Why are you counting calories? I sure don't anymore. That's the freedom of raw.

I don't eat breakfast. I wouldn't even eat it as a kid.

That whole concept of breakfast being the most important meal of the day is just for marketing purposes. Even Paul Bragg in his Fasting book advocates not eating breakfast.

Well, to be quite honest we've always advised people to eat whatever you want for breakfast. What I mean is...we've become so accustomed to "breakfast foods" (or "lunch foods" or "dinner foods") that we feel that there are ONLY certain types of foods we "can" eat at whatever meal time when the truth of the matter is...you can eat whatever you want/whenever you want!

There have been MANY times I've gotten up and just CRAVED salads for breakfast and yeah, I had to do some mind renewal as I would sometimes find myself telling myself, "You can't have salad for breakfast...have something else and then have the salad at lunch!" How ridiculous! So...if I desire a salad at breakfast, I have a salad at breakfast. Then at lunch or dinner, I may have a bowl of uncooked oatmeal or a smoothie or grawnola. I have had raw desserts in the morning like some raw pie with raw ice cream!

So yeah, if you have some raw prepared meal left over from the night before and you want it for breakfast, have it!

Also, I noticed you mentioned needing something to satisfy you and granola is out because of calories, etc....well, again, around here we do not get into the whole "calorie thing" but we also realize that many do so if that's your bag...but you may have to just play around with different things until you find what works for you...but also remember that depending on how long you've been raw, sometimes (especially in the earlier stages of going raw) you simply cannot expect to eat the basic 3 meals a day. Sometimes you will find you have to eat many small meals a day as opposed to having a big breakfast that's supposed to hold you over until lunch as it is with cooked food.

It's really hard for me, personally, to offer you suggestions knowing that you are counting calories because Alissa, myself and most of us here just do not go that route...as Veganforlife said...we've broken free from that...it's not necessary.

So, hopefully you will find the answers you're looking for or find a solution that suites you in terms of what to have for breakfast! Personally, I LOVE raw grawnola with nut milk and raisins...Mmmmm! And the calories (however many they may be) do not seem to affect me in the least! **shrugs**

I so agree with Rawkinlocs! Eat whatever your body is craving provided it is all raw. Listen to it. It will tell you what it wants. Lately I've been eating nori wraps w/sauerkraut for breakfast! YIKES!!!

Raw oatmeal is good!!

Soak the oat groats over night, drain and rinse

I like to put dried fruit like raisins, prunes, apricots etcc. with a little cinnamon, then blend up.

Eat more fruit, add some greens. When you've got cravings, fill them for what your body is craving for ~ fruit!

I had thrown watching calories to the wind for a long while..and gave the scale up as well..the results were less than desirebale. I love to eat, and as I have a high level of activity, I tend to really eat more than I should, even if I "graze" or snack healthy (as opposed to being restrictive with only 3 meals a day) ...I battle a sweet tooth that is very powerful,(think dark chocolate) and a "salt tooth" as well ( I could eat tamari almonds ALL day long !!!!). I am willing to have salad for breakfast, but I am having salads for lunch, and snacks, and often for dinner...my "leftovers " from the day before are usually salads...so I am commited to staying raw..but looking for some change in terms of breakfast . I often run 3-4 miles before having anything to eat or drink (aside from some water) so ditching breakfast all together wouldnt be a great idea for me..I would be having headaches and the "crankiness" that goes along with fasting every morning if i didnt eat something after the run. I usually have some green juice right after the run, and sometimes herbal tea. I really appreciate any further imput/ sugesstions and or comments about this. Thank you all so much!!!

is "oat groats" raw uncooked oatmeal?

yes, oat groats are the raw form of oatmeal. They look similar to rice.

I sometimes have a veggie juice for breakfast. Like carrots, celery and beets. You can also make a savory green smoothie or one with just a small amount of fruit, so less sugar. I add a little bit of hemp protein powder to my smoothies for more staying power.

what brand of hemp powder do you use? I have used rice and pea protein powder..have you ever used those?

Green smoothie all the way with low glycemic fruits like berries. You don't have to use a lot, just a little to cut the green taste.

I've been running a lot lately, too. Have you ever tried running in the evenings? I was always a morning runner, but now mornings don't work with my schedule. So I run in the evenings and I actually really like it! Feel free to email me at ezo@comcast.net . I'm always excited to meet other raw runners.

Chia seed pudding--chia seeds/almond milk/vanilla/sweetener of choice. This would have the added advantage of the hydrating properties of the chia seeds immediately after your run. Put it together and the seeds can soak in the time it takes for you to run (30 min). You can put some strawberries or other fruit with this, if you like.

Soaked oat groats are good, and what about other grains with nut milk or starchy vegetables such as peas or corn with a bit of your favorite dressing or raw mayo?

Nut milk based smoothies are filling and tasty. Thick posted a pumpkin pie smoothie recipe that looks really good. However, they don't need to be sweet, I think a creamy tomato smoothie sounds great and probably some other veggies would make nice cream-soup style drinks. Look at some soup recipes for ideas....I'd add a seed cracker to the meal to make it last all morning.

What does everyone use in the green smoothie(s) (to make them thick enough to be smoothies?)

When making a green smoothie, you can thicken it up by using ice, frozen fruit, less water, or items like banana and apple. Apple will thicken it up really thick.

It depends on what you are putting in them and if you add water. Any smoothies I make with both bananas and blueberries seem to thicken up pretty well(2 large handfuls of spinach, 2 bananas, 2 clementines, 2 bananas, and 1 cup of water) . I make one of Victoria Boutenko's GS (2 large mangos, a bunch of parsley, and 2 cups of water) and I find it to be thick.

I add crushed ice to my kids' smoothies and that definitely gives it the texture of a jamba juice smoothie.

green smoothies for us too, spinach and kale with berries and juice. i add banana to the kids, none for me though 'cause i don't like it. it always seems pretty thick to me, i don't add very much liquid. and Never ice! brrr! it's such a shock to the body to drink something cold like that, it feels terrible to me.

The brand I use if from Whole Foods (aka Whole Paycheck;)), is called Amazing Grass. It comes in three flavors and is raw. It is made with rice and hemp protein.

I have used rice and pea protein powder in the past as well. I wasn't sure of the ones I used in the past were raw, so I switched to the current one because at least is says its raw.

I was also like you, eating just fruit for breakfast, and I think this didn't serve me well either. So now I'm trying to make nut pates or nut dips (like tehina) using 1 oz of nuts and eat them with raw veggies. The nice thing about them is that you can make them the night before so it's just grab and go in the morning and they're pretty easy - just throw the ingredients into a food processor or blender and you're done!

So far I'm finding them very satisfying. There are a lot of recipes out there for nut pates and dips, so there's no shortage of options :D.

I had thrown watching calories to the wind for a long while..and gave the scale up as well..the results were less than desirebale.

I know exactly what you mean Joed...when I first started eating raw last year, I was enamored w/ eating raw and I followed the "don't count calories", "don't worry about the fat", "since it's sea salt it's okay" ideologies and it didn’t' work for me. Everyone's body is different, we all metabolize differently so we should be careful to suggest that what works for one will work for the rest or simply someone else. I personally don't see anything wrong with counting calories b/c a calorie is a calorie raw or cooked, and an excess in calorie consumption over what is expended can potentially cause weight gain or can hinder weight loss (don’t know if that’s your goal)

As for breakfast ideas, I have to agree w/ the groat cereal, I haven't had it in a while b/c I am counting/watching my calories so now I'm where you are trying to separate from...fruit for breakfast. :D HTH
